AngelFan,
You can use a laptop although they really get hot and you will need a cool-pad. Make sure the usb is 2.0. Most laptop HD's are 5400 rpm unless yours is one of the newer ones. You transcoding and ripping and writing will be slower

yeah I am using a laptop now..it is going SUPER fast cause it was 2.0 USB and the one on my regular computer is 1.1 so it would go slower..turns out the reason why the DVD was not encoding properly is cause something is wrong with the actual dvd..cause it does the same thing on my laptop too and there is no conflict there..so what I am doing is just encoding the actual movie(doing re-author) I Guess its just a bad dvd..and I reformatted for nothing..oh well..I learned my lesson

You can say it's just the DVD all you want but if you don't dissconnect that drive I can gaurantee that you will have more probs in the future.

Usually a regular PC is better for ripping than a laptop, unless you have a top of teh line laptop, try dissconnecting that drive and burning w/ the comp.

My desktop is a Vaio P4 2.4 that is about 3 yeats old...my laptop is an HP with an AMD Athlon64 3200+(a much faster processor) that is 3 months old. It takes about 20 minutes longer to do a movie with the laptop than the desktop. I only use the laptop when I'm at work. LOL

How can you burn a dvd while you're driving a train, don't you have to shovel coal into the engine... Well your train looks pretty new, maybe it doesn't need coal. :)

Do you own it? You talk about it with somewhat of a passion, or is that just something that happens when you have the same train for a long time, like how police officers talk about there cruiser.

@AngelFan - i give up. i can't force you to fix the PC but 'afraid i'm gonna have to avoid helping you on any further threads as you've ignored my help (your choice and that's fine) but what's annoying is that you'd rather claim the dvd is at fault than fix a basic problem that is gonna permanently cause you problems.

Creaky..Thank you for your help..I got a friend of mine to come over and disconnect the bad drive from the computer(Since I didnt want to take a chance at doing it myself) and I installed the DVD-RW drive..now things are working smoothing..its slower then the laptop due to it being USB 1.1 instead of 2.0 but its at least now on my PC which is the way I wanted it to be

Why won't don't you just (or have that friend) install the drive in teh comp seeing as how you have a usb1. But...if you still have a usb 1 then you comp must be fairly old, which probably means that you have very little ram and have little HD space. i'm a little conflicted.

That's funny I thought that all comps in the last 3 years had usb2. Well 521mb of ram is usually teh recommended memory for DVD ripping, and 80bg for a HD is alright if you don't plan on saving all the movies you burn on you HD. I digrest. Sorry.
