Question about AnyDVD

Since I purchased AnyDVD about a month ago, I've quit using DVDDecrypter for ripping. I've been going into My Computer, right-click-Explore the DVD, copy all the files in the VIDEO_TS folder and paste them to a folder on my HDD, then use Nero Recode 2 to shrink it to fit onto DVD5, then burn with Nero at 4x.
What I want to know is if there is any advantage to using a ripping app in conjunction with AnyDVD (as I see in almost all guides about AnyDVD) as opposed to using My Computer and copy/pasting the files? Am I missing any functionality or useful features if I do not use a ripping app? Or is it more a matter of convenience? I'm wondering mainly because I notice that most people using AnyDVD also use a separate ripper.
Thanks for any info on this!

POEE,
In my opinion it?s just a matter of personal preference.
With AnyDVD and Recode2 you don?t even HAVE to rip to your HD first.
It?s best to have two DVD drives. Place your movie in the reader and a blank disk in the burner, open Recode2, set it like you want it and have recode burn to your blank?
That?s it in one easy step. Recode will Rip, Shrink and Burn.
I personally like DVDShrink over Recode2 but that?s my personal choice.
Anymore, since I got AnyDVD, I don?t rip anything unless it?s a bad disk and needs a lot of attention.

I normally only use DVD Shrink to rip and compress and Nero to autoburn. I skip the DVD Decrypter step most of the time because majority of dvds are DVD-9,so they'll have to be compressed.
I do have AnyDVD,but don't activate it until I have to.Madagascar being the latest release that needed to have AnyDVD activated.
I also use the dual drives.Those smaller DVD-5 originals: I can use nero's copy disc feature and rip on the fly.I am limited to the oem version,so no recode.A little riskier,but a good test for your equipment.

@saugmon,
Hey, sounds like you and I are in the same groove.. I also mostly use Shrink and auto-burn with Nero. I mainly do the Movie Only and no need for deep analysis or AEC, much faster that way.
If I run into a very large movie that I can?t trim down enough to get a good copy without all the AEC, etc. then I just consider burning it to DL as I just did with Kingdom of Heaven..
I used DVD Decrypter in ISO Read then burned it in ISO Write to a Verbatim DVD +R DL with no problems what-so-ever?
Question, Why don?t you upgrade your Nero OEM? It?s a free upgrade. I have OEM 6.3.1.17 that I up graded to 6.6.0.18. It came with a Burner and I have never spent a dime on it.. I?m tight like that..LOL

Looks like I am on the same page as both of you now. I do have AnyDVD running tho anytime that I am planning to burn. I use Shrink and then either decrypter or imgburn to burn. Not ripping to the HD beforehand. I do set a folder for the ISO to reside in and generally keep it there for a few days to make sure my backup is good.

2oldGeak: I tried the updates a while,nothing but problems.Even leaving out the incd pack,it was just too much to deal with. Use the Nero cleantool and reinstall my original oem 6.0.0.21b and all is back to 99.9% backup success!
I see that need to update Nero on a lot of answers to peeps burn logs.I won't include that in my answers to help them. Nero is very effective.Sometimes those updates can be screwy. I have no nerospeed test scan,but I've got dvdinfopro for that.

@saugmon,
I guess if every machine out there were the same, there would be no problems and no need for AD. LOL
I, knock on wood, have not had any problems with Nero.
I never install INCD and just apply the update packages 1 and 2 only. Hey, it works for me and I?m a happy camper??

Now I feel a bit silly spending money on Nero 7 and AnyDVD, since all this can still be done for free...
I used to use DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink and my old Nero OEM until I read about newer titles with more advanced protection schemes. I love DVDShrink, but I heard that the reason it was no longer updated is because the developer now works for Nero on their Recode app. I figured that Recode 2 would do what Shrink does, only better since it is his latest work. In fact, that's why I went and bought Nero 7 Ultra (for USD$90), so I could get the "latest DVD Shrink". But if you veterans still prefer DVDShrink over Recode 2, then I don't know what I was thinking!
Though, even if AnyDVD is only useful for the latest protection schemes, then I'm glad I have it for that, as I'm sure many future titles will make use of them (and SlySoft is great about updating). I am intrigued by the idea of doing "on the fly" DVD backups using two drives, but I don't mind taking the extra step to insure the final backup is as error-free as I can get it. My goal is to store all my originals and never use them, only a backup that can play without issue on as many different stand-alone DVD players as possible. (Also, I prefer to keep the extras and the menus, etc. on my backup just like my originals. I don't have an HDTV and I cannot discern a significant difference in image quality after shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5 when I use Advanced Analysis and High Quality Mode.)
Lately, I've been using AnyDVD's "Remove annoying adverts and trailers" and "Jump directly to title menu" options, and I really like that. I gather it doesn't work for some titles, though I haven't had an issue yet.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, guys. I've been a lurker at AD for over a year or so and I would have been completely lost without this forum!
