I'm using verbatim discs. ANd the last few movies I've backed up have gotten small pauses during playback. I'm burning with Decrypter. Is there a way I can fix this?

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604
You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912
Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). maybe your dvd player just doesn't like it. I've used good media and still had it skip on a few players. Try a different player and see if that works.

Did the origonal have pauses and freezes? I ask because I watched a new dvd this week that had pauses and freezed in it. Not many but a couple. If the origonal has them chances are there is a bad spot in the press and it will probably transfer to the backup.
Your media is certainly quality. I would take MCC media from verbatim any day.
Anyway, just a thought.

Just asking. But is it possible to burn at too low a speed. I got 16x discs, and didnt realize it. I've been burning at 1x or 2x. Could that have something to do with it?

As a rule of thumb, burn your media at 1/2 its rated speed. That is so long as you are useing quality media, which you are.

I had problems like this & was so annoying. After reading On so many forums etc about media & various other issues, I discovered that it was in deed as mentioned here bad media, after switching & testing on various media so far all is ok on Verbatim, & Memorex.
Don't think I'll ever trust the so called likes of Datasafe, Datawrite, Bulkpaq.... But that is my preference & to what I use in hardware terms. Always skiped, frooze or jumped on that media.
I suppose at the end of the day it's true "You pay for what you get" cheap normally means that.
Onwards.

What is your stand alone player. I had as one of my players a Sony 315 model not play any of my disks without skipping. I replaced it wit a 5 series and all is well. My 7 series also works like a charm. Proof of the matter, some players are not good from day one.

Quote: What is your stand alone player.
I have 4, well 5 including DVD stand alone dvd recorder.
It was doing same on all.
My Stand alone player makes are.
LG
Samsung
Pacific
Technika
Liteon 5006 DVD standalone recorder/player ( Works fine).
So I cannot say this will affect all users personally.
But Memorex & verbatim currently play ok On all these makes of Player. Using DVD- Disk.
It's a difficult area for users diffrent setup I suppose. I wanted to strike a balance where no matter what media I recorded on it would play as it should an original backup.
So now after some trial & errors for a few pence more the media mentioned works fine in all mentioned players without 1 hiccup.
Have yet to try DVD+ Media

I'm using an Apex dvd player. I've changed my compression rate. Using good discs. Don't know what else it could be other than my dvd recorder itself. I have a Sony DRU 700A dual layer recorder.

headcase,
Your sony DRU-700A is a rebadged liteon SOHW-832S and is capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom. Dvd-rom is the most compatable format for dvd stand alone players. Here is a link to the liteon booktype utility and there is a link to a usage guide on that page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 Get some good quality DVD+R media (you can't booktype DVD-R media to dvd-rom) and booktype them dvd-rom and try playing them in your stand alone player. Use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to verify that your discs are booktyped dvd-rom after they have been burned.

As stated by squizzle in an earlier post, maybe your player does not like this media. Does it do it on other disks you have burned or only on these 16X disks? Try the disk on another player. Standalones are just like burners they also have firmware in them, my Apex standalone is a few years old and usually will play anything I throw at it, but it will not play dl disks, although my newer players will.

Ok tried it om another player. Still getting the little hickups. The new discs are 16x but my burner is only 8x. Could this be a problem? I usually only burn at about 2x just to be safe. Could it be some problem from one of the many codec packs I have on my harddrive? I'm just looking for answers, any type of theories. Apparently I've made several like this and thers no sense in contiinuing to burn if I'm gonna keep having problems.

Have you tried looking in the Task Manager to see if there is anything in memory that may hog the burner or for that matter start sucking your CPU cycles?
Bad burns are not only caused by bad media but by lots of hidden background programs that only show up when they are least needed.

i had the very same burner for just under a year, then it exhibited the same problems, skipping discs. This was from my top notch 'Verbatim Taiyo Yuden' discs too. same exact firmware revision VY08 pretty much since i bought it. turned out the burner was dying so it went to Burner Heaven and my 2 (replacement for the Sony) LG burners have now stopped mourning and are chomping there way thru discs like it's going out of fashion

I hope its not the burner. It seems to do fine when backing up older movies. No skips at all. Could it be a problem with AnyDVD conflicting with decrypter? I'm hoping its something simple and easy like that. I reformated. Took Norton off and replaced it with mcaffee. And I shut it down when I burn. Still having trouble.

I would not think that there is a conflict between AnyDVD and DVDdecrypter. I have them both and they have never caused me any issue.
Just great backups.
It doesn't make sense that older movies are done okay, but newer ones are not.

hi everyone I recently have been having this same problem as well. I have used all sorts of different media. Right now I am using memorex which I know isnt a good media either. Recently I have noticed though that alot of the newer movies are having the little hick ups here and there. I have my burner set at 4x but it decides to go ahead and do it at 6x I think that might be the problem. How do I fix this?

You should be able to adjust the burn speed in the burn program that you are using. Look in the settings or preferences.
