how do i find out what firmware I have. I checked the dvd driver properties and it says the driver is 7/1/01 so I would say that it is a little out of date. How do you get the new firmware for it?

Since you are using Decrypter go into the Tools tab, then drive and then capabilities and you will get all the info on your drive. Looks like this

headcase,
Since you have AnyDVD and dvd derypter, in order to make them work better togather, perform these changes in DVD Decrypter. Open dvdd, click on tools then settings then click on I/O and check ElbyCDIO - Elaborite Bytes.

Hehe, my mom makes pretty good fried chicken too.
nate2005,
Are you useing 16x rated media? Some 16x rated media won't let you burn it slower than 6x. Try some 8x rated media and as suggested make sure your f/w is current.

Just rechecked an older movie, no problems whatsoever. However all my new release stuff is fubared. Guess I'll have to buy a new burner and see. One last question. Could my ace mega codec pack cause a problem? I know it sounds weird. But I'm just trying to cover all bases.

I did the firmware thing. MY firmware was not recent so I took it to th emost recent firmware that it has. The disc's i have is 8x but it says it only burns 6x,8x so it burns at 6x could that be a problem.

well some of them playback okay but some of them dont. It seems like the newer releases have a problem sometimes. Like they will glitch here and there and sometimes they glitch so much they are un watchable.

Ok. bought some new Sony 8x discs. Same problem. Just got a new lite on 1693s. I'm going to buy at least a 256mb memory upgrade tomorrow. I'll install all this this wekend. I'm hoping this will solve it all. Still, just in case. Anyone have any more ideas?

slow down your burn speed (4X) make sure your system is clean (disc cleanup and defragging often) dont run any other programs while burning ,make sure your running the lastest firmware on your drive, try a different software program to backup your dvds , theres a few to start

Ok. I defragged and installed another 256 in memory. Everything is running fine now. Even the skipping copies that I had previously burned. I reripped them from the bad copies and they turned out fine. So how often should I defrag. Once a week or what?

I have experienced a similar problem...
Yesterday I upgraded to the A106 firmware on my LG 4163B from A105, which I had hoped would overcome the only issue I have ever had with my 4163B. The issue I have is that when I burn (NERO 6, all latest patches) my Verbatim DVD-R 16x (MCC 03RG20) at 16x, although everything appears fine (no errors, verify ok, Nero CD-DVD speed scans good) when I play back on my Sony NS330 player I get really bad skipping/freezing near the end of a movie (no problems playing back with computer's DVD drive though).
If I burn at 8x, I experience no problems at all, so I thought (having read other related threads) that it must be a firmware 'write strategy' problem. You can therefore imagine my joy when A106 came out...but it has made no difference
I do not know for sure, but using a very rough measure (guesstimate! ) the errors occur at about the point (~70%) where the drive slows down in P-CAV. Indeed, the errors occur at about the same point in time for each movie I have written, and the disk plays fine before and after that point.
To be honest, I am not bothered about writing at 8x as a couple of minutes or so extra is not going to kill me, but I was just annoyed that the drive appears to mess up on reasonably good 16x media at full write speed.

It is usually recommended to burn at half the disk speed listed. So if you have 16x media, then you should burn at 8x. The little bit of time you save is not worth the making a coaster.
