First time poster, this is one of the best forums/sites I have ever seen. Also, an initial thanks to Alkohol for his awesome efforts and knowledge transfer.
This is what I'm using, as specific as I can remember at this time:
DVD Shrink 3.2 (3.2.0.what?, not sure if it's the latest, sorry)
Nero 7
NEC 3500 DVDR Burner (Unsure on the Firmware at the moment)
OPTODISC 4x
AMD Athlon 1800, 80 GB HD (71 GB Free), 512MB DDR2700, XP SP2
Burning commences with only 17 total process running.
The machine is coninually cleaned, checked, etc, using:
System Mechanic 6
Spybot 1.4 (Weekly Updates)
Adaware SE (Weekly Updates)
Trend Micro House Call Free AntiVirus Scan
Diskeeper Lite Defrag (After each Burn Sequence)
HiJack This
RamBooster 2.0
CPU Thermal Heat Diagnostic
First off, I've check on PIO and DMA, that was one of the first things I got off this site, thanks much, it was already set correctly. The problem I'm having on occasion occurs during the Encoding Phase of DVD Shrink. My machine will sometimes Freeze, ie, the Progress of DVD Shrink is visible on the screen, the mouse pointer, CPU Usage, but all is frozen. The DVD can be removed from the tray and re-inserted, but that is about all that responds. Ctl-Alt-Del is unresponsive, so, a hardboot ensues.
At the time of Freeze, it's not uncommon for the machine to have the CPU at 60% usage, and RAM at 360MB Free, ie, things appear 'good'.
When the machines comes back up after reboot, I check the Event Log, and there is not a trace of anything during the Freeze period. I have scanned the entire HDD for files that have been modified or written to during the freeze, and Not 1 file fits that time frame.
As some have alluded to, on re-starting DVD Shrink after the anaysis was already done once for the disk that caused the freeze, the analysis is skipped, which is nice since one is already frustrated.
Some solutions I'd like to try if someone would order them in terms of importance are:
1) Despite constant Diskeeper for Defrag, what about trying a good ScanDisk Utility?
2) Could the original movie discs just have a blemish on them? The last one (XXXX and Flow) was Brand New.
3) UnInstall DVD Shrink, run some diags, etc, then re-install.
4) Stay at 4x on the burn, right?
5) Post my DVD Writer's Firmware, and see about Flashing it. I'm a bit timid to do this, as I've read some not so pleasant 'warnings' about Flashing the Writer
6) Check for a BIOS Upgrade/Flash?
7) Anything else obvious I may have missed, maybe more verbose event logging? (Although it's on as verbose as it can be I believe.)
I know I'm not the first to post this, but hopefully I DO have one of the cleaner machines that is having this problem. Since it is only once in a while, I'm more than happy to live with it on occasion, but I would sure like to get rid of it as well :-)
Thanks,
