First time poster, this is one of the best forums/sites I have ever seen. Also, an initial thanks to Alkohol for his awesome efforts and knowledge transfer.

This is what I'm using, as specific as I can remember at this time:
DVD Shrink 3.2 (3.2.0.what?, not sure if it's the latest, sorry)
Nero 7
NEC 3500 DVDR Burner (Unsure on the Firmware at the moment)
OPTODISC 4x
AMD Athlon 1800, 80 GB HD (71 GB Free), 512MB DDR2700, XP SP2
Burning commences with only 17 total process running.

The machine is coninually cleaned, checked, etc, using:
System Mechanic 6
Spybot 1.4 (Weekly Updates)
Adaware SE (Weekly Updates)
Trend Micro House Call Free AntiVirus Scan
Diskeeper Lite Defrag (After each Burn Sequence)
HiJack This
RamBooster 2.0
CPU Thermal Heat Diagnostic

First off, I've check on PIO and DMA, that was one of the first things I got off this site, thanks much, it was already set correctly. The problem I'm having on occasion occurs during the Encoding Phase of DVD Shrink. My machine will sometimes Freeze, ie, the Progress of DVD Shrink is visible on the screen, the mouse pointer, CPU Usage, but all is frozen. The DVD can be removed from the tray and re-inserted, but that is about all that responds. Ctl-Alt-Del is unresponsive, so, a hardboot ensues.

At the time of Freeze, it's not uncommon for the machine to have the CPU at 60% usage, and RAM at 360MB Free, ie, things appear 'good'.

When the machines comes back up after reboot, I check the Event Log, and there is not a trace of anything during the Freeze period. I have scanned the entire HDD for files that have been modified or written to during the freeze, and Not 1 file fits that time frame.

As some have alluded to, on re-starting DVD Shrink after the anaysis was already done once for the disk that caused the freeze, the analysis is skipped, which is nice since one is already frustrated.

Some solutions I'd like to try if someone would order them in terms of importance are:
1) Despite constant Diskeeper for Defrag, what about trying a good ScanDisk Utility?
2) Could the original movie discs just have a blemish on them? The last one (XXXX and Flow) was Brand New.
3) UnInstall DVD Shrink, run some diags, etc, then re-install.
4) Stay at 4x on the burn, right?
5) Post my DVD Writer's Firmware, and see about Flashing it. I'm a bit timid to do this, as I've read some not so pleasant 'warnings' about Flashing the Writer
6) Check for a BIOS Upgrade/Flash?
7) Anything else obvious I may have missed, maybe more verbose event logging? (Although it's on as verbose as it can be I believe.)

I know I'm not the first to post this, but hopefully I DO have one of the cleaner machines that is having this problem. Since it is only once in a while, I'm more than happy to live with it on occasion, but I would sure like to get rid of it as well :-)

Thanks,

Does any other programs work on the PC once Shrink has crashed? Just wondering if it is a Shrink problem or a system problem. The easy test is to try another app and see if it records the movie. You can get a free trial for CloneDVD2 at http://www.slysoft.com and InterVideo has a trial for DVDCopy 4 at http://www.intervideo.com . Try using one of those and let us know what happens.

As for flashing the BIOS, that is rarely needed, though I upgraded mine when it was available. Remember to record your settings before doing it. With flashing drives, it's safe as long as you do it by directions if inclued with support and don't get a power loss. Most of the time you just open and run a small firmware app supplied by your PC manufacturer's support or that for the drive. OEM firmware is usually safe, it's the hacked variety that is most dangerous.

branmaz77,
Between what you have already done and what Brobear suggested there really is not much more that you can do but I'll throw my $.02 in.

1. Run Memtest site below and lets see if it is the computer
http://www.memtest86.com/

2. Clean registry w/ a free registry cleaner. You can use Easy Cleaner : http://www.toniarts.com/products.php?PHPSESSID=5997be39bf7e66389a...
That can cause conflicts in the registry and thusly non-responsive computer

3. Do #6 or have a friend do it for you if needed. As Brobear stated 99% of the time this is not needed but you can check it

4. Do #5 or have a friend do it for you

5. You really covered the rest pretty well

One option of DVD Shrink I tried with my last successful burn after this post, was to turn off the Deep Analysis for better quality. I'm just mentioning that because I don't know what effects that could have.

As for the registry cleaner, System Mechanic has that option already built in, and I use it.

Deep Analysis is just that. For quality purposes with larger movies, the software does a more extensive analysis in order to prevent compression errors. If not coincidence and turning off Deep Analysis made your backup successful, then I'd start looking to the system. That simply means the program could finish with less work. An easy test is to watch Taskmanager to see what the RAM and CPU are doing and watch the heat if you have a heat sensor for the CPU. You want to make sure you have enough usable RAM and the CPU isn't overheating. Encoding runs the CPU at high levels over an extended period, one of the tougher jobs a system can do. With minimal RAM, which your system has for a system that does encoding, you are probably using the last available to the system; especially if you have programs running in the background such as AV ware. My first thoughts are you're running out of system resources and locking up or the system is overheating and shutting down.

branmaz77,
Along w/ what Brobear stated I wanted you to run the Memtest to check out the possible overheating , freezing and shutting down of the computer. Running Deep Analysis could be taxing your setup of the computer

Doing the tests as Car.Mike said is a good idea. Just a note on the Deep Analysis and Encoding. You have a cumulative effect here. Encoding is highly CPU intensive and ties up most of the system resources. Add to that the Deep Analysis feature and you add on to an already heavy load. A lengthy encoding session can put more load on a system than many of the benchmark and performance tests.
