I know this isn't directly tied to Shrink, but then neither is Decrypter - but both I think help Shrink be more successful than Shrink alone. I have read several notes where people were successful using AnyDVD with Shrink or AnyDVD and Decrypter, etc. I have also read some posts where people are advised to turn off or remove AnyDVD in order to be successful with a title requiring VobBlanker and some other instances. So, is AnyDVD worth paying money for? It seems it is useful, but apparently has some limitations, especially with the new Sony copyprotection. I've been tempted to get AnyDVD, but I'm not sure if I should if the Sony protections are going to be more common. Any opinions, insights, observations?

A resounding YES. I only use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 and have yet to have a problem with any movie I have tried.....Best package available for most people, IMO...

Pariah,
AnyDVD is well worth the money. The others ways using VobBlanker and PgcEdit are for people that do not want to spend the $ for AnyDVD. Personally I own AnyDVD but I use PgcEdit w/ the Psl-2 Plug-in way more. AnyDVD does do all of the Sony movies and they update faster than DVDFAB Decrypter.

I agree with Auslander, AnyDVD is well worth the price, which IMHO is very low for what the program does and the support that slysoft gives. I use AnyDVD a great deal, and I run it behind VobBlanker and then rip with VB and so far have had excellent results with this method. I am very glad that I purchased this product, it lives up to its rep. Just my two cents :)

Arnie:
You mentioned that you used VobBlanker, what movie have you came across that AnyDVD could not complete? OP read my mind as well.
Its either use DVDFab D/Vob Blanker/Shrink or AnyDvD/Shrink.

I have used AnyDVD in the background with VobBlanker and then just ripped FlightPlan, Brothers Grimm, The Fog and The Cave. The used Nero Recode to compress and burn. Has worked out fine for me.

I used AnyDvD/Shrink to rip those same titles & had no use for VobBlanker.

I tried it with just AnyDVD and Shrink, and my player would stop at the pause and not go on. So I used VobBlanker, what works for one person does not always work for another. It is just what works for you that matters.

I had the same problem back with Bewitched.
I made sure that Shrink would start the movie on a static image instead of a blank screen.

@Pariah

Is AnyDVD worth it? Most likely yes... but the choice is yours. I agree with the rest, however, I've never used and or owned AnyDVD. Maybe one day in the future when VobBlanker, FixVTS, DVDFAB Decrypter, PgcEdit, PSL plugins, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink all dead, then I'll surely get AnyDVD for sure, but not now.

Here's 2 FREE methods for Newbies only or those that needed and I GUARANTEE that you'll be able to successfully rip and backup any dvds/movies if done right. I've primarily used these 2 methods for ripping and backing up movies and I've never experienced any issues whatsoever.

No AnyDVD, no DVD43, no DVDIdle Pro, no DVD Region+CSS Free, no misery, no black screens, no glitches, no dummy cells, no chapters jumping, etc.

- tools needed; all tools are FREE (excluding Nero Recode 2)
<> DVDFAB Decrypter
<> VobBlanker
<> DVD Decrypter
<> PgcEdit + PSL plugins + FixVTS
<> DVD Shrink
<> Nero Recode 2 (not necessary needed, if you're going the FREE route)

<><> method 1 **use Alkohol's DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker 2.1.0.0** <><>

<> rip the movie with the latest from DVDFAB Decrypter
<> PROCESS your VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker (only 10 - 12 minutes)
<> import/load your newly created VIDEO_TS file into DVD Shrink (or Nero Recode 2, your choice) and transcode as normal
<> burn your final VIDEO_TS or ISO image file at your desire burning engines, such as Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express, DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn, etc.

<><> method 2 **DVD Decrypter + PgcEdit + PSL plugins + FixVTS** <><>

<> rip the movie with PgcEdit using PSL plugins through DVD Decrypter
<> process craps, junks with FixVTS via the Wizard
<> transcode the VIDEO_TS file with DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 (your choice) as normal
<> burn your final VIDEO_TS or ISO image at your desire burning engines, such as Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express, DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn, etc.

For more info on how to use VobBlanker http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/234 -- and how to use PgcEdit + PSL plugin + FixVTS http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/271
Or check on those 2 bold links under my sig.

The choice is yours... If you decided to go with these 2 FREE route, then I strongly recommend you to TURN OFF AnyDVD, DVD43 or any other cracking engines that's running in the background.

Best of lucks to all and happy burning!!! Remember, all tools are FREE, except Nero.

Thanks for the comments. Appears the general theme is it is worth the money, but there are still some free tools out there that can accomplish the same thing. Kind of like choosing between the turnpike with tolls, or a few backroads for free - they can both get me to the same destination, the turnpike is just a bit more direct, but at a cost. I'll probably cave and get it in the near future, as I'm not real tech savvy and anything more complex than ripping with Decrypter or Shrink gets frustrating for my low tech brain. I have used DVDFab Express and VoBBlanker (process all option), which is about the extent I've evolved past the good old Decrypter and Shrink (they may be dinosaurs, but they're loveable - like Barney, only not so insulting to one's intelligence).

AnyDVD is the most cost effective program out there. When used with Shrink, all the issues related to lack of updating are put to rest. Similarly when used with Nero Recode2.
AnyDVD seems to be updated after each new2 Sony/Combia release. AnyDVD saves steps in the movie backup process. With AnyDVD in backround just go right to Shrink or Recode as if the movie wasn't protected, and automatic the burn with Decryptor (images), or Nero (files). No need to use multiple programs. Save time, steps and frustration. Best program for the money that I have ever bought!

I usually run a few titles to my HD with Decrypter or DVDFab, and then leave running Shrink for bedtime or as I'm heading out the door so it runs the 2 hourish shrink/burn process when I don't need to use the CPU for other purposes (like Warcraft). With AnyDVD, would I have to go straight from the DVD, or could I still rip with Decrypter (or AnyDVD) to my HD?

You can use Decryptor, but follow AnyDVD recommendation for settings change:
"To use DVDDecrypter with AnyDVD set I/O Model to SPTI or ElbyCDIO. Set CSS Cracking method to none. Disable checking for structure protection."

Well worth the money.

It will save you steps and a whole lot of time as well. I like things simple, life is too complicated as is to be adding headaches backing up something that should be headache free to begin with.

I am also in love with DVDD and shrink, as I have been using them since my first DVD burner arrived in the mail. AnyDVD makes them function like they were new.

What if I have two DVD Burner drives? Will it recognize both or do I have to dedicate one specifically to reading with AnyDVD and use the other for just burning (or not at all).

AnyDVD will recognize whichever drive you put your movie in.

It looks at your drive before any programs on your PC get a chance to see it. It will auto decrypt as soon as you load the disc.

Then just open whatever programs you want to shrink or rip with. They will all show DVD as "Not Encrypted"

AnyDvd is absolutely worth the money. When used in conjunction with CloneDvd2 you have a simple and 100% sucessful combination. It also make DVD Decrypter act like new again. Seems to update weekly, and I have not found one movie AnyDVD could not handle.

If I can learn here so can you.
Search first, then ask. Words to live by.
