Actually, I watched parts of this movie on the backup version and there is a noticable difference. The overall quality remains pretty good, but you notice problems with detail.

The main things I see are artifacts in the faces when someone is speaking; artifacts in the hair when there is motion of the head; problems with interpretation of fine lines (like the lines of a striped/plaid suit); etc...

This was on a 60" SXRD display.

I would imagine that on a smaller set, you will not see this as much. Also, it is not like the problems just pop out. You actaully have to look for the quality loss to see it otherwise you may not catch it.

I will try and post some screenshots tomorrow if I have time to compare the differences with the compressions. I will try to get Nero Recode, DVD Shrink, CloneDVD2 and original. Actaully, it will take longer than tomorrow, because I need to re-install Nero.

Again, for those that have the single disc widescreen version, you can do a full-disc backup and have a better compression than doing a "movie-only" backup.

Just download this zip package:

http://rapidshare.de/files/16688470/King_Kong.zip.html

Read the directions either in the readme or this thread.

I just got KK single disc, fullcsreen. I I first tried to rip it with just decrypter with DVD43 enabled, it was no good. I then disabled DVD43, and enabled dvd region+ss free not one problem, I then used shrink as always set on auto com. it was at 51% com. Then burned with DVD Decrypter. bada bing no problems and not bad bad quality picture on my panasonic 32".

Hi I tried to back up King Kong last night and due to the low compression decided DL was the way to go. I had not yet burned to DL before trying Kong. I bought a couple Ridata +R DL and twice i tried to back up the movie and both times the copyis fine until you hit play movie at the menu screen. Then it plays 4 seconds of the lead and freezes. I Can't even push stop it tels me not available Both copies I started fresh with DVD Shrink. Any Ideas? Would using - R DL help? This occurred exactly the same on 2 different DVD players.

I have done research on DVDR DL and found many people saying that only Verbatim DVD+R DL (the plus is important) are the only reliable DL media.

This even came from Lightning UK (the creator of DVD Decrypter & ImgBurn).

I would recommend only buying Verbatim DVD+R DL if you are going to go the DL approach at least for now. Also, the Verbatim DVD+R DL that I have seen are made in Singapore. I would bet that in a while they will move to Taiwan and the quality will go down.

If they are too expensive to buy, you should split the discs.

Like I said in an earlier post, I will get some screenshots of this movie so that people will be able to compare the differences. I thought I would get it done today, but I was authoring a DVD all last night and just finished a few minutes ago and I will take a breather for the rest of the day...

You can use DVDFab Platinum (Gold Mode) to split the movie in 2 dvds and remove extras, sound languages..etc without compression.

First let me say this is a great forum and I am learning alot here. I followed all the links that were posted, used Degrypt and Shrink and made my 3rd DVD, burned at 4x with just the movie only no extras or credits and still....not that great quality to watch on my 47 inch tv.
I give up! Maybe just better to watch it on smaller tv? But I wanted to thank everyone for their posts!

@kevnjenn
Shrink would be the wrong program to burn KK to DL disc. You don't need to shrink the files just copy the disc if you have Nero ultra 6or7 and AnyDVD. just click on copy dvd and let her rip. If you don't have AnyDVD you need to rip the files to a folder and then burn with Nero. You can also use dvddecrypter on ifo file mode to rip and burn in ifo mode but I have not had success with that method with DL discs.

Thanks for the reply garmoon,

I was basically trying to use Shrink to rip the DVD to my hard drive, as it is set to burn with Nero. Tried again today just taking the files Shrink ripped and adding them to Nero to burn. I burnt at 2.4 x and once again same result. After you push play movie thats it. I will try Decrypter as soon as I get my movie Back from a friend. Thanks again and any more suggestions would be appreciated.

@kevnjenn

Since you have Nero, I would try Nero first just click on copy dvd. designate drives and burn that verb DL+R disc. It's so easy.

burns easily and Nero says burn completed successfully , disk just freezes and jumps. Maybe just really poor media. I'll have to try to find the verb here locally. Only had Ridata and Memorsucks to choose from at the time.

@kevnjenn, Are your backing-up your copy from the original source, It's possible your source folder or file may be corupt or you may have a bad copy original or otherwise.:P

Got the single disc Widescreen version, and has only 43megs of extras - the rest was movie. It fit with MINIMAL compression via DVD Shrink before I gave the disc to the kids to scratch!

Well I started with the original source N2DVD but then lent it to a friend to watch. The source folders are thr rip produced by Shrink. Plays perfect on the PC, just no luck when burning to DVD. I think I will Try new media once I get the movie back from my friend. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sounds like a media compatibility problem. Obviously you know how ot burn something as it works ok in moms DVD player, so that tells you that it's something with your player that is causing the problem. Typically when it locks a player up its because it is stuck on a read error. Try different media, or even a another blank disc - sometimes low quality (ie. el-cheapo) media has defects in it. Always stick with quality media in general as you will not spend that much more money up front but will surely make up for it in the long run!

It looks like I am having no luck with the screenshots. I have gotten 3 screenshots, but they look almost identical. It is perhaps because the quality drop is not pixelation, but small spots of noise during motion, especially on fine details. Since the differences are not showing in the screenshots, I will give up on trying to do this.

However, I will recommend that those of you that have large sets (50" and larger), to make either a DL backup or a 2-Disc backup...

Hi all, here is my formula:

Ripped with DVDFab to HD
Shrink - reauthor main movie
DVDD to burn

Compression was 53%. Watched it on my 27 inch and it looked fine. The movie turned out perfect.

I have read the reports on King Kong and as I said before, just running Any DVD with Shrink the disc went right through. I watched my copy and it was perfect. Don't understand how it could be so hard when I had no problems at all.
