Well if your one DVD player won't play one disc, it's either the DVD player or the disc. If the disc works in another player, but not in yours, it just goes to show you that there is something particular with your player and that disc combination. By changing one thing (the disc) you will figure out which it is.

As a note, the majority of DVD players like DVD- instead of DVD+ ...

Make a copy of your copy and see for yourself.

Just use Shrink directly, nothing else was required for this movie to be backed up.

It doesn't have anything to do with being a "Hard Backup" it has to do with people want the best quality backup without having to go DL

I backed it up at 45% and I can't see much of quality loss.

Get yourself a back up Chinese DVD player. They will play anything for a lot cheaper then $520!

Well, I have a new wrinkle. I've been using a Sony DRU-710 dual layer burner to make dual layer burns of extremely long movies - like Titanic(new version) and Lord of the Rings: extended - (2 disc movies reauthored onto one DL disc). I've used Verbatim and TDK - all play fine on my Panasonic player. Now along comes King Kong and I can't for the life of me get a backup of this (DL) to play on my Panasonic. I've tried TDK, Fujifilm, Memorex. Is there something inherent on King Kong that Panasonic hates? Any ideas would be appreciated. BTW - am not sophisticated enough to use the pgcedit software that some have suggested.

Get a copy of Intervideo DVD 3, it will split and duplicate Kong to 2 DVDs.

@fargen

Sounds like a bad burn to me. I have made two backups of this movie onto DL media, one a Ritek the other a Verb. Both play great in my Sony, Philips, and Apex players. I assume you're burning an ISO using ImgBurn? If not, you should be.

fargen,
I did the movie w/ no problems using Verbatim D/L. Stay w/ that brand as there is a difference and dump the other d/l media. Used DVDDecrypter (setup a little differently) and AnyDVD. Then used Imgburn and burned at 2.4. Ran a PI/PO and got a 96.28% Quality rating. There is nothing on that disk that will cause problems. I just think that the Player can not read the lead-in so it does not recog that blank media or it was a bad blank

Ok I am back looking for ideas again. I have burnt KK to a dvd 5 no problem looks great on my 51 " HD TV through my upscaling DVD player. But i again bought some DL Disks and paid 7 bucks each for the Verbatim +R DL and have the same results. Starts fine until the end of the menu then just choppy and freezes. Maybe a hardware Problem? Suposed to be a Benq DL Burner but maybe problems make it only burn to one layer? Maybe I should look at a new DL Burner.

try a different program....also try burning the movie with the DL at a slower speed ,if your burning at 4x try it at 2.4 ,if your burning above 4x thats probably your problem

kevnjenn, I think your biggest problem isn't the burning, it's that you're paying 7 bucks apiece for DL blanks. They're routinely on sale for no more than 2 bucks apiece at the usual suspects (OfficeMax, BestBuy, etc.).

Yeah 7 bucks a piece is crazy, but i wanted to know if it was just the media and in a pinch paid it to find out if the Verbatim would make a difference. Dumb maybe, stubborn definately, but they were the only Verbatim I found near by. Unfortunately Best Buy here in Canada does not stock the Verbatim DL only Fugi and Memorex.

Okay, I should have made clear that these DL burns that won't play on my Panasonic do play on my Pioneer. For some reason, the Panasonic does not recognize the lead in for KK; but it has for other titles - there's something about KK, I'm convinced. Tried Verbatim DVD+R DL - Same damn result. Am now trying Imgburn of an ISO file - first time, so I'm on pins and needles.

Imgburn failed too - that is, will play on Pioneer but NOT Panasonic.
I hereby officially give up; KK has kicked my ass several times over. Will now reluctantly split the film over two 4.7 discs. Over and Out.

Yes. All these DL media have played fine on Panasonic with other titles. Only King Kong is being a bitch.

Kong was easy, best result is to put it on 2 disc's, I cant see compressing a movie that long without some loss, also I cant imagine watching a movie like this on full screen or watching any movie on full screen, just my opinion.

By far the best result of King Kong is an identical copy on a Verb DL +R book typed to DVD-ROM> SWEET.

You need a progarm that offers bieng able to split it on 2 disc's, still my favorite way of copying, never any loss of quality whatsoever, and to my suprise I copied kong using my old trusty dvdxcopy from 321, perfect copy.

@FredBun, I think two disc take away from your viewing experience i.e. Having to change disc? Takes me back to the days of VHS and watching a epic extra long film or mini series. Also the original disc allows me to just press play kick back and relax and in backing up a copy I like to ENJOY this same experience. Recording to two disc takes that away. I have single tray SONY DVD players which I find perform better that 5 & 6 disc DVD/CD changers. You also have to burn to extra disc. Two disc un-needingly. The compression with either SHRINK or NERO is fine unless the compression falls under 50%.:P

I'm sorry, but I have no problems getting off my hynie to change disc's if it means I get to watch perfect quality dubs, and beleive me most of the time I can see the differnce, I wish I didnt but I do, I also like to keep all the extras especially subtitles, both my kids are deaf so I dont have to emphasize the importance of that, and with 2 disc's I get to keep them all with no quality loss, so my reasons are kinda more of a necessity than prefernce.
