Brobear...
Being more new than veteran to this thread, I appreciate the input. Having read through this long thread made me think this was needed the mother of all hacks...just wanted some to know that (hopefully) it will be a simpler process than using 3+ programs. Thanks! :-)

I was able to do "Narnia" with the help of "AnyDVD". I've been using DVDecryptor and DVDShrink for about a year, but Narnia was probably the 3rd movie I've ever had a problem with.
AnyDVD works though, between that, Shrink, and the Burn, it took about an hour.

As I mentioned, it's mostly in how you handle the files. AnyDVD will work with CloneDVD 2 and only the 2 are needed for Narnia, Region 1. With Recode the files have to be ripped to the HD and processed before use for transcoding. AnyDVD or any other way it can be done doesn't matter. With DVD Decrypter, the rip in ISO R will work for this particualar release. Don't expect it to work all the time, because it's been proven not to. Shrink will open the disc image on this one and transcode. In File mode with DVDD, the files won't open in Shrink and the files on the HD need processing for compliance first.
All a person needs to realize on this release is that with some software the files have to be processed for compliance. At the first hint of a problem, do it and the problems should disappear.

Anyway, no-one's out to silence or belittle anyone who thinks the free tools can't quite do the job anymore, quite the opposite; you'll find most of us here still use and highly respect the likes of DVD Decrypter/Shrink et al. what we're debating are the details, ie if someone claims stuff like or similar to 'this worked for me, thus it MUST work for everyone else' then we need to correct those incorrect assumptions, that's all. In some cases yes of course those assumptions are correct, there are some films that are still able to be done by DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink alone. While it's on my mind, re the link i posted, i'm not betlittling the main poster in there ('2OldGeek' re the ISO method), i'm just saying that was an epic thread where the details were battled out and in this instance, DVD Decrypter sort of lost, even though it was a foregone conclusion that Decrypter actually needed some help either from PSL files or whatever. No shame or hate in that, it's gonna happen to a product that is no longer supported/even no longer able to be supported properly.

I am new to this forum, having been a long time user of DVD XCopy, which I have used without any problems until I bought and tried to backup Chronicles of Narnia. Having read many (not all - who has that kind of time?) of the posts regarding making a copy of that movie, I have done it successfully using DVDFab Decrypter and DVD Shrink.
I tried just DVD Shrink at first, but it would fail trying to decrypt the movie. After reading about AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter, I downloaded them all and then decided to first try out the one that was both free and not currently owned by a company that doesn't want me using it.
The decryption of the complete DVD using DVDFab Decrypter took a very long time (I didn't time it because I didn't think it would take that long, but I would estimate that it was over an hour to decrypt). I don't recall doing much as far as settings go, just used defaults.
Once it was decrypted, I used DVD Shrink for the first time. I normally copy only the movie because that's all I really need in a backup (keeps the kids from ruining the original). However, I decided to experiment with what DVD Shrink offers, and I was able to successfully copy the entire DVD, absent of alternate languages. The resulting copy used approx. 67% compression, and the results looked surprisingly good. I then made a movie- and English-only copy and the compression was around 80%, also looks great.
I read about a lot of people that used Nero, which I have, after the DVD Shrink step, but I found that to be unnecessary. At some point I will probably try AnyDVD since I've read a lot of good things about it, and it might be faster than DVDFab Decrypter.
BTW, I always use TDK or Verbatim media, and never have a problem. The burns were done using a Sony DRU-820A onto 4x +RW (whole DVD) and 16x -R (movie only), and the source was a Region 1 DVD.

Would this method work for Narnia?
Rip with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode with AnyDVD running in the background and then burn the ISO to a dual layer disk.
I basically want to get this backed up on a dual layer verb...so what would be the best method? Can you do it as an ISO or do you have to go in FILE mode(video_ts folder etc.)?

Do not use AnyDVD in the background with Decrypter. Use Decrypter in iso read mode and you will get your rip. Back a couple pages on this thread I posted my rip log from Decrypter done without AnyDVD and you will see that it rips fine. If you use AnyDVD in the background you will get packheader errors, because of the removed cells. Then open the MDS ouput file and use Decrypter in iso write mode a usual.

With SPTI selected, CSS cracking off, and Check for Copy Protection off, DVD Decrypter can be used with AnyDVD in ISO R mode. Those are the preferred Slysoft settings for DVD Decrypter to be used with AnyDVD. That will work with all DVDs in both ISO and File mode. With Narnia, DVD Decrypter will rip the release in either ISO R or File mode. With ISO R, I suspect that the files can be burned with no compression, though I haven't tried it. DVD Shrink corrects some compliance errors, so even though the ISO R files will transcode with Shrink, they may or may not burn by themselves. A rip with DVDD in File mode requires the files to be processed for compliance. I've been playing around with Narnia and have tried it different ways with different software, except to burn DL and I dont' think it's worth the DL to do it.
To answer Socrates9's question, yes you can rip with AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter (preferred Slysoft settings) in ISO and then burn the files to a DL disc. I encoded the files ripped in this manner with RB/CCE. So, if they'll encode, they should burn.

Slysoft suggests not using SPTI but to choose the ElbyCDIO as your I/O setting, not that I think it makes a difference I have not changed mine, but this is what is listed for their reqs.

5.9.1.1, 2006 02 15
- Important: When installing this version over an existing
installation, you must reboot your machine. Otherwise the changes
made in the AnyDVD device driver will not have any effect!
- New: Added workaround for DVDShrink / Nero Recode "Out of memory"
error when copying Macrovision RipGuard protected discs with
menus, e.g. "Madagascar" R1 (US)
- New: Error zones on RipGuard/Arccos/PuppetLock protected titles are
now replaced with "valid material". 3rd party tools like DVDDecrypter
will now work better (no more "Pack Header Error" messages - another try,
this time it should really work).
- Note: To use DVDDecrypter with AnyDVD set I/O Model to SPTI or ElbyCDIO.
Set CSS Cracking method to none. Disable checking for structure
protection.
- New: Added "AnyDVD Ripper". This little tool repairs defective DVDs
while copying them to your harddisk. It can be started from the menu of
the AnyDVD fox icon. It can be started as a stand alone application from
the start menu as well, so it can be used even if AnyDVD is not registered
and the trial period has expired.
It is identical to FixVTS (http://www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS/) but instead
of fixing problems "in place" it copies the files to your harddisk directly
from the source DVD. It fixes the problems while the files are copied.
Some DVDs which have severe mastering defects e.g.,
"Menace II Society" R1 (US) can now be copied with all DVD copy tools
(elby CloneDVD, DVDShrink, etc.) Many thanks to the author of FixVTS!
- Fix: Hang after update check with some system configurations
- Some minor fixes and improvements
- Updated languages
Since the normal Microsoft interface is SPTI and Slysoft recommends SPTI or Elby, I just suggest the one that should already be in use with Windows. It's okay to use the Elby, but not required.

Okay, the posts I have read from slysoft back a couple of months just stated use the Elby but I have left mine. And in order to have the Elby you would need to dl Clone, so I just figured it was a way to get you to use the product, which I have anyway.

A couple of months ago was the first time I really noticed Slysoft putting the preferred settings in the change log for DVD Decrypter. It came about the same time the ripper was introduced. I guess that's one of the reasons I remember where I saw it. That's how I knew it was either SPTI or Elby.

I see what you mean, but that was just a mods take on it at CDFreaks. That's no better than someone here at AD saying the same. Slysoft only recommends the 3 settings mentioned according to the 2/06 change log for version 5.9.1.1. That's the most recent mention of DVD Decrypter directly from Slysoft that I've seen. With those settings there's fewer unnecessary error messages and AnyDVD works with DVD Decrypter in any mode that way.

Ok, when i get home from work, I'll try to burn king kong again. I have DvdDecrypter, AnyDVD, Dvdclone2, and Dvdshrink. Yesterday I used DvdDecrypter and DvdShrink, and it burned ok on my DL disk, but the quality of the movie was bad. I see your posts about using AnyDVD and DvdClone, but what do I actually have to do? I was messing around with DVDclone, and it seemed like it would rip the movie onto my HD, and then I put in my Verbatim DVD+R DL disk and it would burn it on. Is that all I have to do? Would that work, or do I have to use AnyDVD and Dvdclone? I dont really want to put it on 2 regular Dvd+Rs.

I have DVD X Copy GOLD, DVD X COPY XPRESS, DVD Shrink, AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter, and DVDFAB. I have tried them all in several different congifurations and I can't get Narnia to copy. I bought the extended edition. The bonus disc copied fine, but the movie won't. Not sure what gives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ?'s for me to help narrow down the problem let me know.

The Narnia disc had issues with DVD X Platimum + AnyDVD as well as CD CLONER 3 + AnyDVD. Finally ran DVDFab Gold + AnyDVD and kicked Narnia's ass. DVD X Platinum + AnyDVD is still the best, but cannot copy a copy that it has made.

you don't need fab gold, just read the whole thread, use just DVDFfab Decrypter the free one for instance
