It still gives a rolling black screen even when using WRC Rally Evolved's IOPRP. The reality is that I downloaded the ISO because I can't make an ISO rip from the original DVD(I don't have a DVD drive on my computer, go figure). I used the IOPRP from the ISO, and it still doesn't work(I think I missed something or it cares if the IOPRP is there or not). I'll try using every disc I have that has an IOPRP300 file in it. I tried without using an NTSC patch, by the way.

EDIT: Well, this is very nice, I just found out WRC Rally Evolved doesn't work with the DNAS swap(take a look here: http://jaydium.servehttp.com/usbextreme/...d&itsregion=PAL )
Looks like I'm stuck. I'll try without it.

Confirmed. This game doesn't work at all.

My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

Hello,
I am buying an external harddrive today, but what about Kindom Hearts 2?
Will it work after a patch? I checked the CD and it only has the IOPRP300.img. I have read on the Jaydium compatiblility list that Kingdom Hearts 2 (PAL, btw) is not compatible unless you do a DNAS300 change. Is it true, did someone try this?

Hey Guys! Happy New Year!

I figured I'd start this year off by modding my PS2. What I want to do is do a softmod to my chubby original PS2 (it's not a slim). I've been reading forum posts for weeks trying to understand how this all works. All I ever see is stuff about slim PS2 consoles.

Does anyone have a link to a tut or some advice on how I could softmod my chubby PS2? I'd like to be able to boot disc images off my external USB HDD if possible.

Thanks in advance!

do you have to use FAT32?

Yes, you have to. But I am not sure if NTFS is also possible, another member can answer this. BTW: Got my external HD working! Kingdom Hearts 2 running but without music.

PT,

I don't have a chubby to try it, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. As far as I have read, the chubby USB ports are less restricted than the slims. I don't think you would have any problems.

All you need is Swap Magic and an external USB Hard Drive. The chubby PS2 has USB ports, so I don't see why the process wouldn't be the same.

Go back to the first page of this thread, and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to simply follow the same tutorial for your chubby; there is nothing specific to the slim about the tutorial.

Good luck, and don't forget to report back so anyone else looking to use a USB HD with a chubby will know if it works.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/250563 this says to do it with ntfs and others I have read say fat32. I am going to try ntfs first.

For some of you having problems with black screen freeze or the PS2 not recognizing your hard drive, one of the problems I encountered was my drive was not formated to FAT32. (Even though the first step is to do so.)

BUT the problem is Windows XP doesn't like to format external hard drives larger than 32 gigs as FAT32. It will keep it as NTFS. But if you are using USB extreme, this is no problem. Here's the important part:

After formatting your entire drive as NTFS, (just one partition) open USB extreme. Then, before putting on games, click the format option, it will instantly switch your drive to FAT32 with hardly any wait. After that, put on games and use the SWAPMAGIC folder trick as noted. It should all work perfectly.

Hope this helps

This thread should be sticky'd, pretty handy for everyone who wants to play games off an USB-HDD. EDIT: Is there any good PS2 homebrew developer here? If so, we could enchance the program to buffer the FMV before playing, so we'll reduce the stuttering.

Alright, I've been reading through the millions of posts about slim ps2's and external harddrives and can't get my set up to work. So I'm using the swapmagic with the .elf files on the harddrive, am able to boot up the hdadvance program but whenever I run a game the screen goes black and nothing happens. Could this mean my harddrive isn't compatible or is it just the games themselves? Also it seems like nearly all games need to be PAL but I'm in the US where everything is NTSC... do I need to convert all my games over? Someone please help me... I'm so close but can't get it to work.

DLeg,

Here are my thoughts:

You mean USBAdvance, right, not HDAdvance? If you really meant HDAdvance, try downloading and using the USBAdvance elf instead.

Quote:
Could this mean my harddrive isn't compatible
Not in my experience. A non-compatible USB drive simply won't boot/isn't recognized by USBAdvance.

That would be my vote - have you tried the DNAS swap? That often solves the black screen problem after you select a game to load.

I think, but could be totally wrong, that Swap Magic allows you to play PAL games without conversion. I don't have any PAL games so can't really comment authoritatively on that. I don't think you need to convert, but Ace would probably know more about that as he has applied the PAL/NTSC patch on one or more of his games.

Yes, I think you are almost there too. Try the DNAS swap on your games, and I think you will get them working!

On another topic, I think the USB drive ABSOLUTELY HAS to be formatted as FAT32. The instructions say NTFS, but if you notice that format is later converted to FAT32 by the USB Extreme software, so the end result is FAT32, not NTFS.

Good Luck!

DLEg,

Maybe take a look at this thread to answer your PAL/NTSC questions:

Cool,

I think that is one of the big drawbacks with the USB HD copy of games. As far as I know, the DNAS swap allows you to play the game locally, off your USB HD, but NOT use the USB HD copy to go online and play.

Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Hey DLegacy, that's great!

For the enlightenment of others who may read this later, you might want to confirm what you did that made it work, and which suggestions were helpful for you.

Thanks!

Hey Cool,

Online play is tricky because of the authentication required. I believe I may have read somewhere that Swap Magic and a burned CD/DVD copy of your game might work for online play, since a DVD/CD burn does not require modification of the DNAS, but I can't recall for sure.

Because of all the DNAS mucking around we have to do to get games to work with a USB Hard Drive, I believe it is impossible to play online from a USB Hard Drive copy of your game.

DNAS (Dynamic Network Authentication System) is, specifically, the "key" that allows online play, so once you change that, of course you also lose the ability to play online.

The only "sure" way I know of for online play is the original CD/DVD.

Sorry I don't have better news; if anyone else knows more please feel free to chime in, especially if you have experience with online play via Swap Magic and a burned copy of your game, or another means other than the original CD/DVD.

Good Luck![/quote]I used USBEXTREME to convert my ps2 games over to my USBHDD which is a Western Digital My Book 320GB. I created a folder on my USBHDD called SWAPMAGIC and put USBAdvance.elf file in it and renamed it to SWAPMAGIC.elf. I then loaded SWAPMAGIC on my ps2 and it came up and showed a list of my games (16 to be exact) installed under USBAdvance. Only 4 of the 16 games work. Here is my problems:

*Games on my USBHDD work with slow load times: Is there any way to lower the load time.

*Games on my USBHDD load up showing them in black and white and the screen scrolls up and down: Is there any way to fix this issue. I am sure it has something to do with the format. I did the PAL to NTSC convert and it still didnt help. It just comes up as a blank screen instead of flashing.

*Games on my USBHDD act like they are loading but then sit there and the screen goes blank: Is there any way to fix this issue or will I have to get another copy of the game. I did the DNAS swap but it didnt work. Are there any other methods?

All the I want is to be able to play ps2 games off my USBHDD and not worry about having to use the disk or burn copies. Are there any other ELF files that will load games better then USBAdvance? Anyone that could help me I would highly appreciate it.

You can go here: http://rapidshare.com/users/6AGOJ0
enter "windrider" without quotations for password.
I have uploaded USBAdvance_GlobalWar-Edition. Once you download it there is an ISO file you need to extract and then you can copy it to your USB drive and folder SWAPMAGIC and then rename your .elf file to SWAPMAGIC.ELF

Basically just follow the guide on page 1 of this thread for making your folder on USB drive.

This has worked better for me. There are also some tools there to help you out and tutorials.

Hope this can help you out some.
