Yes, I can browse the drive with ulaunchelf and even load usbadvance from the very same disk.

The problem comes up once usbadvance has loaded. The screen just sits there blankly as if waiting for a drive to be plugged in. When I plug in my 1Gb pen drive it sees it and shows the game list after several seconds. However with the exact same game on the hard drive it still sits blankly even after several minutes. If I try to select any of the options e.g. start game it gives me an error message saying that a USB device is required.

I would then try something else. Boot up the same way you do, but add the folder SWAPMAGIC download the usbadvance elf file from here:
http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html
or you can download my globaledition usb advance and do the same.
You can go here: http://rapidshare.com/users/6AGOJ0
enter "windrider" without quotations for password.

Put all the files in the SWAPMAGIC folder and rename the elf file.

Then rename elf file to SWAPMAGIC.ELF

This way when you browse your usb drive go to the swapmagic folder and click on the SWAPMAGIC.ELF

See what happens this way.

I am just wondering if something wrong with the file you already have.
Not sure, jsut speculating.

Hi all,

(Overview)

I have the following items:
- Swapmagic 3.8
- i-Buddie USB 2.0 HDD Housing 2.5" with a 40 GB Hitachi HDD
- USBAdvan.ELF ---> created SWAPMAGIC folder in the FAT32 formatted usb hdd and also copied and renamed to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
- PS2 V15

(Queries)

All these posts in this forum are all self-explanatory and rather helpful. However, it seems I'm having a lot of troubles getting past the 1st stage...

I've gotten as far as renaming USBAdvan.elf to SWAPMAGIC.ELF in the SWAPMAGIC folder in my usb hdd. I've also copied a game onto the usb hd. When I power on my PS2 with the usb hd plugged in, it stays on the black screen and won't load SWAPMAGIC. I've read a few posts that made reference to my problem. But am still stucked. Can someone help?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, the usb hd plugged into PS2 must be separately AC powered? or can it be usb powered (i.e. in a similar fashion as when you plugged into a PC). Reason I'm asking is, normally my usb hd'd led light will flash when plugged into a PC. This led light did not flash when I plugged into my PS2, which brings me to assume that either my usb hd is not compatible or I'm doing something seriously wrong when renaming the USBAdvan.ELF

Cheers,
yzlo83

The USB HDD must be powered separately as far as I know. Mine comes with AC power cord. Does your USB housing have a power on/off switch?

I am just curious is your 40 GB HDD a USB drive or is it just in a USB Housing.

Then all one needs to do is boot up with the SM 3.8 DVD and have USB drive turned on and it should find the SWAPMAGIC.ELF right away.

Thank you for your reply.

Mine one is a usb powered meaning it is supply by the pc power source. It doesn't have a power switch at all. Thanks for clearing this up for me. I will endeavour to get myself a new one with a power source. :)

P.S. - This thread is awesome!!

Hi again,

This is a stupid question...but I'm wondering as all the HD nowadays are SATAs, will it be compatible with PS2? I'm trying to decide to get a SATA or an IDE.

You say you have a V15 PS2 so your only option I believe is a USB drive.

There is a thread here on IDE drives and PS2

smokyrain,

Are you implying for V15, I must use IDE as opposed to getting a SATA?

No I am saying all you can probably get is a External USB HD.

The other thread I posted just lets you know whats compatible with different PS2 versions.

Thanks for the download smokyrain.

I tried using global war edition as opposed to the alternate version. Still got the same results of no games off the HD though. I've come to the conclusion that it isn't working due to the fact the HD is meant to be USB 2.0 only and/or it is made by Western Digital which after some checks apparently doesn't have the highest compatability rate with USBAdvance.

I'm going to try out a few other things, even try all this through my brothers new slimline ps2 in case that makes a difference. Thanks for all the help up to now though.

I have a basic question

Sorry if it has been asked before.

So should the game on my HDD be in ISO format?

I am assuming since your posting in this thread that your HDD is a USB external drive.

So yes the game is in ISO format and then you use USB Extreme or USB insane to write it to the External HDD. USB insane will rip the ISO to the drive, while USB extreme you need to load it up in a drive or virtual drive.

If its a IDE HDD then one can use winHiip to write it to that drive.

Hope this helps you out.

Yes you will need swapmagic or usbextreme disk to boot usb drive.
Then just read beginning of post on how to put swapmagic folder and files on the drive.

I have both of them but I prefer the SM 3.8 cause then I can also play back ups that won't play on a USB drive. You can't play back ups on the PS2 with Usb extreme.

Dear smokyrain,

Just got my USB 2.0 Housing with a 320GB IDE Western Digital HD. Unfortunately, same problem with loading USBAdvan.ELF...

This is starting to sound rather comical...hehe...

When I load SWAPMAGIC, it loads up perfectly. But for some reason it fails to load up SWAPMAGIC.ELF (i.e. changed from USBAdvan.ELF)

Can you please help or anyone who has a V15 ps2?

Cheers,
Albert.

Hi, I hope I can help you out. As I said above PS2's are USB 1.1 and you need to use a USB external drive that is backwards compatible with the USB 1.1.

That is why I said you need a USB drive, not a IDE drive in a USB housing.
Now I may not be 100% sure on that but the ps2 later slim versions do not work with IDE drives. The older ones could use the network adaptor and hook up an ide drive but not the newer ones.

Sorry if you have misunderstood my information in above posts.

Yes just checked your link and it says:
High-speed USB 2.0 interface; backward compatible with USB 1.1

But it also says:USB bus-powered; no AC adapter required for most computers

Thats fine for computers but for your PS2 it is going to need AC Power.
So no this won't work with yours.

Here is an example of what I have except mine is 250GB.
