hey guys,

Awesome info provided; just got my ps2 slimline fixed up with this.

am running a 200gb external enclosure seagate drive via USB and swapmagic 3.6 (soon to be 3.8).

Problem: Speed. when i start up gran turismo 3, for example, the video at the start is all stuttery. plays at like 1 frame a second... the drive is DEFINITELY fast enough to support the transfer rates, and its a USB 2.0 interface. any ideas what the issue could be? I really don't want to resort to having to burn my own DVD+Rs for my games!

Thats very common
It's that the PS2 only supports USB 1.1 and not 2.0
So thats why you get slower frame rate and loading times.

ok have another problem...

just got two games - fifa 2007 (PAL, DVD5, ps2) and super monkeyball (NTSC, DVD5, ps2). NEITHER worked.

i basically downloaded them as a rar from a reliable source. extracted them to ISO, mounted ISO using Daemon Tools, fired up usbextreme and ripped the mounted DVD straight to the drive. no errors.

the ps2 recognized the games there, when i click on them it just goes blank. tried hitting start etc, waiting 10 mins, no luck. BOTH games just black screen.

any ideas?

Ok if you follow steps 2 and 3 of this link it will explain how to do a DNAS or IOPRP swap.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/348187#2100927

A lot of games need this in order to work on USB drive.

There is a list of compatible games at this site as posted in the following link, but it appears to be down at the moment. Not sure if thats a permanent down or not.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/17/348187#2953461

I have a 300 GB full of games and yes some games the movies will be choppy but game plays fine. It depends.
I play GT4 and it plays perfectly. I just skip videos etc
But I also just back some up to DVD and play them with Swap Magic 3.8.

p.s. another thing: you mention a lot of games require this to run off USB.

is this the same case with burnt DVDs?

as in, do i need to do a swap if i get a game, burn it onto DVD, and just use swapmagic (3.6 in my case)? or will it work as-is?

awesome that's good to know.

do you have a personal recommendation for what brand(s) are best suited for the ps2? seems like you know what you're talking about :)

If you need IOPRP's just go to my Folder. Password is: windrider

Download the USBAdvance_GlobalWar-Edition.rar and inside there is the tools folder with DNAS swap tools.

As NHS2008 said you don't need to do this to just play backups with Swap Magic or other method.

Good guide here on what type of media to use:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341

I myself mostly use Verbatim or Sony DVD-R, but I have used DVD+R and no problems either. They just say with DVD+R that you have to make sure the Book type is DVD ROM

wow, awesome resource - thanks for that.

so here's the latest in my woes.

i took your usbadvance and have put it in my hdd as swapmagic.elf. i put in my swapmagic DVD and it loads up usbadvance without problems.

next, i took the fifa dvd i had, replaced the iopr300.img file as you mentioned. i recopied the game onto the harddrive using usbextreme.

now, the game DOES boot up, however it gets stuck in the opening page "fifa 07". it does not go beyond that black screen with the fifa07 logo.

to do the iopr replacement, i used magiciso to simply remove the old files and replace the new ones, and save the iso. i figure this is the same as going through the lengthly process of copying everything over to my drive, replacing, rebuilding, god knows that. unless that's part of the REQUIRED process?

thanks for all your help guys, i really appreciate it.

i'm trying out gran turismo 4 in about 20 mins (via DVD, givin gup on this harddrive deal!). will let you know if that works :)

cheers!

You mentioned the game fifa 2007 you have is PAL. I am wondering if your PS2 is PAL also.

If not what happens sometimes is the PAL games won't play proper on USB or otherwise is your PS2 is NTSC unless the game is a Multi DVD.

I then use the ADR patcher to fix these games, or the PAL to NTSC. I have had better luck with the ADR patcher though.

The Jaydium site is back up to check on compatibility.

If you need the ADR patcher you can get it from here:
Or the PAL to NTSC here:

MasterChu, I've been looking and posting around these forums for a fix to my problem. Basically, I have USBAdvance working fine, it detects my HD and everything. The problem is that none of my games will load. This could just be coincidence, my shitluck, or maybe they really aren't compatible with the game (GH1, GH2, THAW). My HD is formatted to FAT32, I've ripped everything to the drive using USBExtreme. Everything runs fine until I load up the gsmes. I press X, and my HD light begins blinking. After a little bit, the screen flashes in the top right corner, my HD light stays lit and it hangs at a black screen. Does anyone have any clues as to why this is? I'm just guessing at this point they're incompatible with USBAdvance. But whatever you guys can tell me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Sounds like you got everything done right, but its probably just that the games you mention are not compatible.

Check http://jaydium.servehttp.com/usbextreme/..._listgames=2344 to see if they are working or not with usbextreme.

I suppose that's the case..
On the plus side though, I did get everything working through CogSwap with a take-off of the tape and tissue mod (used cardboard instead of tissues). Been working on custom songs all day. It's quite a mix, to say the least..=D

Thats cool..Does take some time doesn't it,compiling songs but nice in the end.
Well good luck with it and hopefully down the road you will find some games that are compatible with the usb extreme.
