I'm trying to find out if I must have AnyDVD to remove copy protection or if I can remove it using DVD Shrink or any other program?
Thanks,
Carl

If you want to remove copy protection from any latest releases then, yes you are going to need a program that is regularly updated, such as AnyDVD.

Will I still be able to use DVD Shrink to rip to hard drive and Decrypter to burn if I don't remove the copy protection?

No shrink will 'choke' and not be able to shrink the disc at all.

If you do not remove copy protection then it's like trying to open a lock without a key.

AnyDVD is my preference & it works great running in the background w/ Shrink.
Another one that's updated and good too is DVDFab Decrypter (free). You can rip to your hard drive w/ that than process those files thru Shrink as usual.

You only need AnyDVD if you want to copy new releases. If that is not your aim, then you don't need it.....:-)

@carlvo
when i first started doing backups, i had been doin' my homework and researching on AD, i was almost ready to get AnyDVD but then i came along a few posts about dvdfab.
so i decided, (since it was free) that i would give it a shot first. i haven't looked back since. i rip with dvdfab, run through vobBlanker (to get rid of the extra craps), and then run through dvdshrink/burn with good 'ol dvddecrypter.
i haven't had one movie that i could'nt back up. i have not gotten one error out of dvdfab. it is a couple extra steps, but to me worth it. just my two cents.

DVDFABdecrypter to crack the encryption and copy to your hard drive.
DVDshrink to compress.
DVDdecrypter to burn.
That's all I have ever needed to back up any movie.
All free programs. All work wonders. SWEET!

In truth you don't NEED AnyDVD because there are other options available as stated.
But just for pure convenience it's a very nice program to have.....

AnyDVD makes life very simple and it's very versitile along with the fastest updates out there so no encryption is safe! For the longest time I didn't use it... I had it but didn't use it..... now it's like, ahhhhhhhhhh easy..... very nice to have and very easy to use. I love DVDDecrypter so much but it doesn't work with the newer movies...... but with AnyDVD running in the background, DVDDecrypter is the best again!

I thought I'd offer my personal choice when tackling ARccOS or ripguard is using something that is known as the PSL2 plugin for DVD Decrypter.
This plugin hasn't failed me yet (and I'm pretty much a DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink purist!). If you want to know more, let me know!

i downloaded that psl2 plugin thing. man it looked complicated. vobBlanker looked simple compared to that thing,so i started using VOB,i just didn,t think i had enough knowledge for the psl2.

I've been playing around with this to see if I actually need AnyDVD, and from what I've seen, I don't. I backed up a few of my new releases I've bought recently without having AnyDVD running. I just put the DVD in the drive, opened up DVD Shrink, and ripped the movie to the hard drive w/o any problem. I was also able to burn it to disc w/o any problem. I tried this with a few different titles just to be sure of myself, and it worked everytime. All I needed was Shrink and Decrypter.

At some point you'll need AnyDVD or DVDFab Decrypter unless you want to do the plugin route w/ DVD Decrypter (not knocking it just a few more steps and apps used)
DVD Shrink and Decrypter can still handle new releases by themselves - just depends on what copy protection is on it.
Here's just a few that will give a problem:
Underworld Evolution
Freedomland
Pink Panther
Fun w/ Dick and Jane
When you come across one that does give you a problem you at least have choices on what to use.

In my personal opinion I think that you need a program like AnyDVD. Its updated frequently and a program that seems to just get the job done. So my answer would have to be yes you need this. Even works better when you got it running in the background and you can use DVD Decrypter.

another good reason to buy anydvd
AS THE INSTALL OF THE SONY ROOTKIT IS A SECURITY RISK TO YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM.
THERE ARE OVER 2,000,000 MUSIC CDS SOLD WITH THE SONY ROOTKIT VIRUS IN THE WILD AND THE SONY ROOTKIT WILL INSTALL ON YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU INSERT THE CD AND AGREE TO THE TERMS OR NOT AS IT WILL INSTALL THE ROOTKIT. PER MICROSOFT:AS THERE IS NO WAY TO REMOVE THE ROOTKIT VIRUS.
AnyDVD tackles Sony DRM Rootkit Virus!
If AnyDVD is installed and active on your PC, the new so-called "Sony DRM Rootkit Virus" has no access to your system and THROUGH the affected audio CD Another good reason to get AnyDVD!

The PSL2 plugin relies on a number of free apps, and can be a bit of a pain to get everything installed if you're new to the process.
As long as you have DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink installed, there is an installer available that will install everything else you need. If you google something like 'PSL2 Plugin installer' you should find it, if you're interested.
However, after saying that, any product by slysoft is always a very good option. I've heard nothing but good things with AnyDVD.

I agree with half sonnet79's comment. Once you master the new way to use DVD Decrypter, there is no movie that can't be backed up. As for AnyDVD, I really can't comment because I haven't had the need to purchase this product. I have backed up all the recent movies using all freeware except for one product. If I have a movie that I'm concerned about the quality, I use Dvd Rebuilder.

In another thread I posted, VobBlanker is another program you should take a look at. I know this topic is about whether or not to use AnyDVD but if you want your backup's to be less compressed take a look at VobBlanker. Just throwing that in there. If your curious just check out my links in my signature.

It all depends and the choice is yours. However, I've never seen any movie(s) that I can not rip and backup using FREE tools. I used and still use (A) DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker (95% to rip), (2) DVD Decrypter + PSL Plugins (5% to rip) and so far both methods has worked 100% flawlessly.
Yes, it is true that it looks complicated at first, but once you've mastered the technique, it's all piece of cake, easy as sippin' on a Corona. On the other hand, I might get AnyDVd one day in the future, but as for now, I'm good.
Best of lucks to all.

i started only with DVD Shrink and its great, then i had a few dvds from overseas with different region codes, thats where decypter came in. even with the toughest encryption decypter uses it brute force method to crack the ccs. now i have any dvd and as it runs in the background everything copies automatically. so you really only need any dvd if you are copying other region codes.

Not true, very far from being true.
