Well im trying to decide if I want to get a new video card for my PC or an Xbox 360. I would get the 360 but only if I knew I would be able to play burned games on it. I know that sounds bad but I?m not going to spend $50-$60 bucks on a single game, I?m just not.

So im trying to decide if I want to get an Xbox and go through all this to mod it. I?m most concerned about getting it opened without damaging it. And I have 2 computers 1 with a MSI board and the other is an ASRock. Both have SATA. Do you know if I will be able to load the mod for sure from one of these motherboard?

If there is much risk in doing this then I will just spend my money on a 8800GTS, but if you guys tell me its easy then I will get a 360. I have built my own computers for years so I?m not really afraid of working on things like that. It just seems getting the 360 open is a pain.

Please give my your thoughts.

Thanks!

do you know anyone that you can borrow a game from that you know works, maybe its something else .. the people i got mine from are sending me a game that works and if it doesn't work on mine then they're even paying to have it shipped down to them and fixed .. i'm just saying it could be one of a few things .. sending your box back has to be the last resort. but i've done 7 coasters in 24 hours. one more i might turn to drink. it'd be cheaper

When you guys say "chip" what do you mean? I didnt think you needed anthing like that. I thought you just had too hook the DVD up to a PC board and flash it from floppy. Am I missing something here?

@XBOX2007

It aint what motherboard you have that counts,
its your sata chipset.

Download textbooks 360 flashing guide theres a table in there somehwere telling you what sata chipsets are compatible etc.
VIA are probably the msot compatible chipset.

The xbox 360 isnt hard to get open at all though,
there are many guides on how to do this,
and despite what they say all you really need is,

A big fat paper clip,
A small thin paperclip,
A torx 10 screwdriver

And thats it.

@unimatrx

After what you have said i think it is worth getting the chip checked

Did you ever get any games working with the chip?

@damodamod

Its nice to see your offering people help aswell,
most people i find on these forums with the same user ranking as you tend to get the answers they want and leave,
its nice to see your sticking around

Thanks Josh I did download the "textbook" and think I?m starting to get the picture as to what needs to be done. I do have an nForce 3 board so it should work for Samsung drives.

So here is one more question, how can you tell what drive you are getting if you are buying it new in the store? Is their a way to tell from the codes on the box? Or should I just try to get a used one on eBay and make sure the seller confirms its one with a Samsung?

I dont think there is any code on the side of the box,
so get one from ebay or something.

if the worst comes to worst though and you end up with a hitachi,
you can always buy a new samsung drive buy itself and swap it in,
but trust me that it isnt too easy.

Nothing Josh, i have not burnt one game thus far. I have also go the external samsung drive for backing up original games and i have nothing accomplished. Here is what i did for that

1. Used Schtrom to rip the game to the PC
2. Used 360 Associator to convert to NME
3. Used imgburn (selected the .dvd file)

I followed the team underdog instructions, i did not used xbox back up creator, do you think that is what i missed (it was not mentioned on the site http://www.nme-360.com/howto.html

What i did was enter the layer break manually into imgburn by going into the settings, then i chose the .dvd file to burn it... Do you think it could have conflicted?

I think im sending the box back tonight i have come to the last resort guys

Thanks again. Yeah I'm going to buy one off eBay that I know for sure has the Samsung drive. I'm SOOO glad I found this board and got this info before I bought the 360. I went back and looked at the one I almost bought and it has the Benq/Phillips/LiteOn drive and I would have been screwed!

This board has saved me a lot of time and money, thanks again. And if anyone is reading this that does not have a 360 yet do what I'm doing and get all the info on what you need before you get it. I know for most of you it?s too late because you already have your 360.

Ok here is a situation. I found a 360 on eBay that does have the Samsung drive. But it?s used and the guy that has it says it has been opened but not by him. He says it works perfectly with real games but he does not know if it has already been flashed or not. So here are some questions-

Is there a way to tell if it has been flashed from the dashboard?
If someone tried to flash it but messed it up will it make it so I can not flash it correctly?
Can the DVD drive get screwed up so that it will not play copied games but still play real game fine?

Sorry about all this but any info would be a big help.

Thanks

Hi,

I followed the tutorial for a pre-patched game, and for a game I assumed was a pre-patched game (although it made no mention of that). I used CloneCD v.5.3.0.1. I gave the games to someone to borrow, and they told me the 360 said "unreadable disc" (or similar) for one game and "open tray" (or similar) for the other.

Does someone know what the problem is? I would appreciate the help.

Thanks.

Dont be daft!!!

There will be sites out there,
but you saying you want to buy them leads to me believe they wont be backups.

And this site is not about pirating at all!

Depends what tools you used, did you convert it to NME Using Nme Associator? Also you should be using Verbatim +R dl to burn them

Use imgburn to burn your dvd at 2x max no more.

Are you sure you created that .dvd file correctly,

secondly is your drive a DL burner

Lastly you can try reinstallation of imgburn and enter the layer break manually so you dont have to rely on your .dvd file you can burn the iso straight off.

hope that helps

Hi,

Going to try another game, just to make sure its not the .dvd file.

Both my dvd drives are dl. First game I downloaded had the .dvd and iso file already there just in a .rar unpacked and tried to burn it, but came up with that message.

The rest I have downloaded have a .nfo then a load of files 001 002 and so on. Not sure exactly what im doing with them yet bit of reading up i think, any tips on what to do with that type?

Cheers

If it is a ripping/burning issue, then why not try the easy route that is guaranteed to work, by this I mean xbox backup creator? Rip and burn, everything patched as it should be by default...seems like the process you described is adding extra unnecessary variables that could cause problems. Just my 2 cents.

@burrows

the 001 002 files are simple rar files. Right click one, click open with, pick winrar. Drag and drop the the contents to your desired directory.

@Josh

Go back to the ps2 thread!! The illiterate await!

I sent the console back to mod chip fitters so they can take a look if its the chip. i just want to be sure that its not faulty. But i will try that method too, thanks for the input :)
