Another question, when you guys play your 360 how hot does it actually get? THe front and sides of mine are just a normal temp, but the back can get fairly hot after half an hour or so. It's not to the point where its too hot to touch, but there's definitely some heat there. Is this normal? I've never had any problems due to heating like freezing or bizzare graphics problems.

standing vertical, the 360 can scratch the discs- even if you're not moving it about; and wouldn't it just be blocking one of the main vents on the sides?
Why is it blocking a vent?, every dot hole area is free from being covered. While it's horizontal, mine gets warmer on the bottom, I think it's because the circle holes can't breath(or so).

That's what I mean: it gets warmer on the bottom because isn't that vent getting blocked? If it's horizontal then no vents are getting blocked and it shouldn't heat up as much. Either way, the back bit looks like it's going to heat up no matter which way it's positioned, and it's the back bit that worries me.

the should have put better fans in the 360 is my opinion being as the cpu is so big that it needs loud bigger fans

I've read posts where some people have added extra little fans.

Yeah, I'm thinking of adding a couple of coolers sucking air out of the back of the console, it needs to take the air out, so don't ever put coolers sending air to the back, it'll be worse, that's the problem the 360 has, it doesn't free enough heat from the inside.

So what I'm thinking is a little box where I can stand the 360 horizontally, and putting one cooler sending air to the bottom of the console, and 2 extra coolers at the back sucking air.

Mine does get rather warm back there.

My wife and I sat in line outside of a Target for 14 hours. It was cold, but we were excited. The most anticipated system was about to be released, or so we thought. Within the first month it started freezing up. As it locks up, all you can think is "When did I last save?"

Okay, fine. I called XBOX (Microsoft) and told them what was happening. "We'll send you a box to ship it in", they told me. Great, I sent it back. 2 1/2 weeks went by and finally, I got it back. They even sent me a new game (Kameo) so I was pretty good with the service. Happy as can be, I went to playing. (Withdrawels were setting in) Almost immediately, it started again. First it just locked up, then started blinking three red lights.

I searched online for fixes and tried everything. I placed a fan behind it, a fan in front of it to draw out the heat, placing it away from the TV, on top of its very own stand, etc. Nope. It would work enough to come on and get me excited that it was going to be okay, then checkerboards and lines filled my screen.

Again, I called XBOX (Microsoft) and again they sent me out a box. Again, they decided to send me a game (Kameo, again!) to make up for the problem. Four weeks went by and everytime I called, they'd say they already sent me a box to return it in. Finally, I received a box.

Then, we got it back. I enjoyed it for about a month, then it did it again. Lines, checkers, red lights on the power button, numerous calls to XBOX. They then try to tell me that my warranty is expired. What? 60 days? I didn't even get 60 days worth of playing because of the problems.

Finally, they decide to send another box. Again, it never came. I have to call again and again. 5 days later, I get the box. Great, I send it back again. 1 1/2 weeks later, I get it back. During this time, they send me an Intercooler. Plus, I had requested the new power cord and AV cable. I received them before I got the box to send it back in!

I just received it back (they tell me they sent me a replacement every time) and I played it for one day! Yes, I said ONE DAY!!! Remember, this time it had their Intercooler on it, the fans, its own separate shelf away from the TV, etc. Now, they tell me they don't think they can do anything for me because my warranty has expired. WTF? It has NEVER been right. I spoke to a supervisor and he says I have to wait 72 business hours or so for someone to get back to me. ( What's that? 1 1/2 weeks?)

All I want is a system that works. They keep sending me these "refurbished" systems and tell me that they are "Good as new." I am so fed up. For all these people that think a lawsuit is not in order, think again! I didn't jump to that. I gave them chances, over and over. I even asked that they just send me a coupon for a new system in one of the local stores or just for them to send a new one. Nope. It must be too much trouble to do that. Making a customer happy can't possibly be a priority. Now here I sit. Out of 6 months, I have had a system in my possession that is usable for maybe 2 1/2 months.

A die hard XBOX fan (mainly due to Halo) is thinking really hard about the new Playstation. I'm ready to say FU to Microsoft and scrap any hope of ever having a good system.

This is their last chance. Anyone else tired of giving them every chance in the world to make it right, just let me know. I'll be right there with ya!
Same story here. I'm on my 3rd unit and they didn't give me Kameo the 1st and 2nd time I sent mine in. I bought my 360 in July and here it is January 16 and I'm still waiting for my box to arrive so I can ship my 360 in and get my refurbished unit. Here's what they told me. They told me, they will only send you an actual new unit if the problem occurs 3 or more times. OK, well this has occured 3 or more times. Guess what? It has to be the same exact problem 3 or more times. The 1st box I bought scratched discs to bits, the 2nd froze up all the time, and the 3rd worked for about a month and all of a sudden, 4 deadly lights, and the 360 couldn't read discs anymore. Everytime I put in a disc it says: Unplayable disc. Well, let's just hope my "new" unit is fine. Good luck. I recommend buying the 2 year warranty that came with the 360.

I haven't read through the whole thread, but how many of you that are having problems are using a power strip or surge protector? I have my console plugged directly into the wall and have never had a problem...although I've wiggled the power connector where it plugs into the console and created the 3 red light fault.

it means they repaired a unit and used it to replace your broken one so you don't have to wait for them to fix yours.

I just read the entire thread and it reads like a horror movie??!?!
I got my 360 on launch day and everything was fine over last summer my AC broke!!! I live in Florida and it get STUPID Hot and Humid here. Like a fool I really needed to play FarCry and turned it on. I thought "It's 8 at night it should be cool enough" WRONG!!! Lines and 3 red lights. M$ sent me a box and then another unit. I went ahead and got their extened warranty. The cool thing it covers my 360 and all of my M$ acessories. I have 4 controllers and the Wi-Fi adapter. So far all is well. I know that they now offer a 1 year warranty. Hopefully it will stay working.

I heard on Xbox-scene.com that the 360 has a piece of plastic on the heatsink, between the thermal paste. It has caused a lot of grief with overheating. If you decide to remove it, try putting new thermal paste on the heatsink. Arctic Silver works great i heard.
