well it gives the option to change or remove. if you click on change then you get option to midfy, repair or uninstall. i tried repair and it says i need the cd-rom.

when i click on remove. a windows installer box pops up and its says "gathering information" then an error pops up that says "Error 1316.A network errot has occured while attempting to read from the file C:WINNT\Installer\ECDC6.msi. then once i hit ok, i says fat error during uninstallation.

i never tried uninstalling it before i used ZAP initially the first time, so im guessing that whats caused the problem.

@arniebear
Txs - I was at their site and saw this but didn't see the dl link:) Need to get glasses :0)

@maskeeta
Possibly - from the info arniebear supplied from Nero - it does happen in rare cases. Some you might as well rule it out.
Go to http://roxio.com - support section - choose your product. Click on 'ask roxann' type in uninstall and click on 'unable to remove from add/remove programs' they will give you instructions and a windows utility link to uninstall the program.

Did you ever run ccleaner? (see 1st page of thread).
Msy not help but will help cleanup any conflicts, temp files etc. Pretty safe program.

You can try again - might as well if you don't mind maybe another coaster.
The other 2 things I think left to rule out are the drive and the ide cable.
So let's try with just the burner in - disconnect the dvd rom drive.
Next would be trying in another pc which I know you said might be a problem.

just got antoehr coaster :(

yeah i did run cccleaner.

just to clarifiy the next step: right now i have my burner in the master and the dvd-rom on the slave. before i switched that the burner was on the slave cable and the dvd-rom was on the master, but the jumpers were both on cable select. so you're saying to unhook the dvd-rom from the slave cable its now on and keep the burner in on the master?

is that checking the ide cable?

The best test for the ide cable is getting a new one or trying another pc.
Are you using an 80 wire ide cable (blue, black and grey connectors) or using the cable select one?

If your PC is old or your GHz is low your burner eye runs longer overheats and just like a cheap little bulb it burns out

Hi maskeeta
Ok so the last 2 things left on the drive - is the drive itself or cable - I'm guessing since both drives were set to cable select you are using a cable select cable. You've basically ruled everything else.

So cheaper you could just pick up an 80 wire & set both drives as cable select(see link below) or just take the drive back if it's still under costco warranty from your earlier post. Myself - I would still get a new 80 ide cable.
Here's more info on cable select (txs arniebear for the link):
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCS-c.html

Now the ram - is that what's showing up under 'system' in 'control panel'? You may have a stick that went bad. Run a diagnostic tool to test it. If you need one you can try this free one:

Ok then your fine on the ram - I didn't realize that was from gateway's website.
Good luck on finding a store that will let you return something opened but I don't know costco return policy.

You may want to check out newegg.com for a burner/cable. Good ones imho in order my price as BenQ, Liteon, Plextor.

@ maskeeta

Do you have the original software to "reinstall" over what's left of the original instalation? This in order to recomplete the program and attempt further diagnosis.

Two times through the thread and what comes to mind is something that I've seen in others = Nero 7 + Shrink = eventual failure.

Although your "sense key" errors are giving the impresion that it is having difficulty in reading/burning, can you "play" a DVD through that drive?
If so check settings on ControlPanel> Admin Tools> Comp. Mgmtm> Storage> DiskMmgmt.> -insert a dvd and ensure that drive is reading all as "healthy". This is just to ensure that your laser is functioning correctly. If you have other issues please post back...

The error you mentioned that you received.
Quote:

That particular error message is from Roxio Easy CD Creator. That could very well be your problem. If you have Nero 7 & Roxio then they are contradicting each other. I have Roxio on my machine also. In the task bar close to the clock you will see a Roxio drag to disk. Make sure this is closed. Also in the task bar with start up items there is a Roxio Drag To Disk icon. Right click that and exit.

Maybe that will get you straightened out. Now if you had Roxio and removed it from Add/Remove programs, there are still registry entries from the Roxio that need to be removed. If that is the case let me know and I can walk you through removing them.

Edit: Error 1316.A is a network error. It probably has something to do with Roxio also.

Then as long as you have the Nero CD we need to clean your registry.

First uninstall Nero from Add/Remove Programs

click Start-> Run and in the dialog box type regedit. Now remember to only remove certain items, this is important so you do not mess up any registry entries.
When the registry opens you will notice a divided window. The window on the left make sure My Computer is highlighted. This is where it will start looking.

Now because I don't want you to mess anything up I want you to do each entry three times. This means that after it says, "End of Registry", go back to the top and highlight My Computer again.

Now for a couple of things you need to know. Look at each entry before you delete it. You want to make sure the entry that you are deleting is one that you need to delete. Second thing is you can tell it to move to the next entry by pressing F3. Each entry you want to delete press the delete key and then enter because it will ask you if you are sure. This will get you through the process faster.

Now on the registry select Edit-> Find and when the box opens type Roxio and make sure all three selections are checked: Keys, Values, and Data. Now select Find Next and it will start searching.

After you have done Roxio three times, then do Nero, followed by Easy. After you have done each three times there should be no more items. If on your third time you are still finding items then do it four times to be on the safe side.

After that I want you to go to hijack-this.org and download the program. Run it and post a log for me to look at. After I look at the log and we make sure your machine is clean of all infections then you may Install Nero. This is the only way to get your machine operational again. Just follow my instructions and do not delete something that is not Roxio or Nero related.

Just a note for you: If there is an item that won't delete it probably says that it holds not value. Don't worry just proceed with the removing.

Please be careful. I wish I were there to do this! I hate sending people into unknown territory!) I think you will be fine.

Look forward to seeing your log.
