I got a question. My PSP was dropped in the water and stepped on.
The LCD screen was shattered and I can't play games or movies.
I replaced the LCD screen and it works great. I also replaced the UMD
Laser assy. When I turn it on and put a UMD game in there it makes
alittle noise, but thats all. So I took the game out and pushed the
switch with my finger, and I noticed the eye moves back and forth
alittle bit and the black thing thats suppose to spin in the middle, only
moves back and forth alittle. I need help, I don't see another motor.
now I'm just scratching my head.

Hi, I have the same problem.
Here is what happened to me.
I have v2.0 PSP. the laser would get the error "disc could not be read".
I just so had a 2.82 good psp where everything worked.
So I took both the psp's and switched the mainboards. Well after. The 2.82v board in the 2.0 psp laser was working without an issue, but the psp with the 2.0, the laser was doing the same. The funny thing was, if I took the battery out in the psp with v2 board and left it out for 30 minutes and then put the disc in and powered the psp, the game would come on, but once I got in game it started running slower and slower untill it froze and I had to quit the game. I dont know if its a memory issue loading info the board. I was playing GTA liberty cities UMD.
I don't know what this could be. I looked at the board and tried to align all the little rubber squares where they should be but it still freezez and then I get the disc could not be read error.
So in conclusion, both lasers work, just the board with the 2.0 has the issue. I also updated the 2.0 to 2.6, but still the same result. I might go to 2.8 to see if that helps, but not any higher.

try mine!
i opened my psp because there was a dead ANT on the display! i dont know how it pass the security guards of the psp! LOL....... anyways, after reassembling, i was shock when the umd wont play, only noise and i noticed that it is not spinning! so i took it apart again and discovered that there was one flex cable got loose! after connecting, its up and running!
i did not even touched that cable cause its under the lcd and on the motherboard! so i therefore assumed that psp's are not assembled perfectly and thus dropping it causes severe disconnection problems of its flex cables! btw, i never dropped mine! see ya!
Hi to all, I'm new here so bare with me, ayt?

first off, yes im a noob, but i have been doing my homework on this issue before i ask my question and sound redundant. i just got a PSP about 2 weeks ago, and, as it would seem, like an astounding amount of other people, ive got the "cannot read disc" error. i was playing a game (MLB:06), paused it, put it in my pocket, (im in the army, wear ACU's and have big pockets... before you worry about that) i pulled it out a little while later and the game had frozen. i tried shutting down the system but it would shut off, so i just popped open the disc tray. now it wont play any games or movies. ive tried the off and on deal, taking out the battery, moving the laser. but to no avail. im not sure if downdating the firmware will help or if its even possible since i have 2.81. while reading through this thread, i noticed that more often than not the issue resounds with 2.8. ive also downloaded 3.5 from sony but havent updated the system yet. any suggestions? also, taking to a shop is out of the question since im in iraq.

if you want to play homebrew apps and games, DO NOT UPGRADE MORE THAN 3.03!
try cleaning the laser lens, since your in the desert, dust is a big problem! or you can open the psp to service it yourself since your not able to bring it on a shop. lock for flex wires that maybe loose. good luck!!!!

hey thanks, lyknoader for the response, im actually thinkin more and more that it might be a dust on the laser issue. it still looks pretty prestine inside tho although i saw a peice of lint on the laser right after i poster that last message, so i blew it out and tried it, it started to work, but then froze up at the load screen. anything you, or anyone else for that matter would suggest for cleaning the lens. kleenex too abrasive? and can i crack it open to check loose cables and blow it out without breaking that factory seal, since im still in the window where i can take it back to store where i bought it and dont wanna lose that outlet. also if it is a shitty firmware ive got, is there any chance of this going away if i update. i would like to getdown with some of the mods eventually, but im more concerned with just having a functional system at the moment.

Upgrading wont do anything. But since you are on 2.8 you could downgrade and upgrade to 3.40oe-a to play homebrew. check out psp-hacks. But yea, im not sure. I would say try compress air. and as with kleenex it would work if it has alcohol on it. but kleenex leaves some tiny dust and lint.

sorry i havent been replying to what all of you have said ans thank you all very much for the feedback. but ive decided im gonna take the fucking thing back, the only problem is that i have to wait for the PX here to get em in..... which could happen god only knows when. after 4 days of tryin to blow it out, move the laser and just generally piddle around with it, it's time for it to go back to the store. but thanx again for everyones feedback

Originally posted by Rhazel: No, but judging by what you said about dropping it, i'm guessing that your laser being off track is the problem. I dropped mine aswell, it was doing the same thing, just screaming it's guts out like it was trying to read the umd, just not being able to pick it up. Just shut your psp off...i took the battery out, but it prob isn't necessary...then like i said, get the pen and just manuever the laser. Move it a little more and with a little more pressure (don't go overboard though) each time and maybe try moving it away from the spindal and see what happens. Thank f*@k mine worked first...otherwise i woulda given up first go. I really hope this works for u man...if you have to get it repaired the pricks may even update it for you :(

You can just send a letter to the BBB talking about your psp and they will make sure sony will exchange yours for a new one. They did it to mine. It took about a month but they did the trick.

Anyone have any other ideas? I will be going on vaca real soon and would like to play some games on the plane.

ok people i have said something earlier on in this thread and just listen to me
down grade from 3.50 and then upgrade to 3.40 oe-a it is easy and it takes me about 5 min per psp
u download only the umd's you already bought and then delete them when you sell them. virtual umds cannot be lost destroyed or anything else.
trust me do this you dont have to fool with this problem any more
i am not responsible for anything you do to your psp while downgrading just follow a video on youtube that tells you step by step how to accomplish this
good luck and u can get eveything u need by restering on pspiso.com =)

Can you elaborate a little please? How do you download the UMD (especially because I don?t have anything that will read the UMD)? Where do you download it to? How do you play it?

You download it off the net...like pspiso.com You play them with the game (iso) that is on the memory stick, problem with this is that it is a pain becuase memoryu sticks cost a bit n that some games lag more, n they take up alot of space.

What am I doing wrong? I download the update 2.71 to my desktop. Rename it EBOOT.PBP then paste it into the UPDATE folder. When I go to read the update the PSP says "The game could not be started 980020148)"

That didn't seem to work. I tried different configurations. Any other ideas? What should the rename look like? (example please)

What fw n y are u updating it for?
N it is suppose to be called EBOOT.PBP
when u downloaded it make sure it wasn't in .rar format. .rar format requires a prog like win-rar to unzip (uncompress) the file. just put the EBOOT.PBP in PSP/GAME/UPDATE.
