@matt25 : I have the 108 and with the 1.20 firmware, it also automatically booktypes.

@everyone:

After flashing my drive, I can get SLAX to recognize it once in a while, but when it is recognized and in modeB if I reboot, the drive isn;t recognized and my PC hangs like a mofo during POST. I did get it to work one time, randomly, but my flashes said they failed. Hopefully as others have noticed, it really worked.

Who wants to work on a SLAX distro with me, incorporating all this flashing stuff in one nice LINUX boot CD???

I think Windows Vista maybe the problem. I used DVD Decypter, Clone CD and Image Burn on my old PC with Windows XP and they were fine. Tried installing and using those programs as before on new PC with Vista and all i get is coasters.

MDUGA: I think you might be able to help me. :edit: because I ran into the same no-vga cable problem that you did ;) :end edit: Heres my problem...

I can burn the games fine, but I am having problems flashing. The steps I take are these...

-Boot with SLAX to modeB. Reboot PC.
-Flashed in XP. Said it failed. Rebooted to try in safe mode.
-Slax --> modeB
-PC hangs when Hitachi is in modeB now. Not sure why. I have heard of hotswapping as an alternative but I have no SATA optical drive to do so with.

Now, my problem is that I thought the flash worked even though it said failed, because it went through all the steps in xtreme 2.3. 9 steps in all I believe. However, I out burned games in and get the "Open Tray" message. Odd, so I read up on it and came across some info stating that with this firmware, THE DRIVE SHOULD GO INTO MODEB IF POWERED UP WITH THE TRAY OPEN. This does not happen for me, can anyone confirm that a succesfully flashed drive will do this? Also, there is supposedly a mod that overcomes the "Open Tray" problem by simply pressing the eject button once while the burned disc is reading. In my case, the tray just opens up.

Thanks in advance!

For posterity, here is the 2.3 firmware changelog. It explains a LOT of stuff that you may have been wondering...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maximus-Garyopa_XTRM-HITACHI_v2_3_Stealth Revision 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
*** MOST OF THE WORK IS FROM garyOPA, even most of this Readme File ***

WHAT IS NEW:
Version 2.3 Rev 2: Fixed some bugs on 36,40 and 58 drives.
(Thanks to Flash78 and Garyopa for pointing them)
Version 2.3 : Change booting order to counter-attack the fake ss that
appears to be on some EA games.

If you have 2.3 on your drive and dont have a 36,40 or 58 drive DO NOT
NEED TO FLASH THIS RELEASE.

Always recommended: If your drive is flashed USE A RESTORE FIRST
(Use the restore included on this package)

FEATURES (my contribution on this release):

* Removed old media detection and replaced with better media detection
(media detection ver 2) from Geremia.
* Incorporates Maximus Firmware Stealth (Full Firmware Stealth)
* Added support for 59b firmware (what a stupid fw)
* Not yet Media Stealth... I have not heard news on this topic

Three Commands (for flashing use only one: Flash16s or Flash23s, no both):

FLASH23S.BAT: Flashes your drive with 2.3 Fw Stealth (Media Detect 2,
F900 core and Firwmare Stealth

FLASH16S.BAT: Flashes your drive with 1.5 Fw Stealth (Media Detect 2,
and Firwmare Stealth, (NO F900 Core)

RESTORE.BAT: Return your drive to original State, even if you have
firmware stealth in your drive

*RECOMENDATION: If you have flashed your drive in the past use RESTORE
first. If it is a brand new drive use directly the Flash command you
like. If you dont plan to use your drive to dump games use the
flash16s.bat

* ALL NEW XTREME V2.3 FIRMWARE FOR ALL BUILDS OF THE HITACHI DRIVES!

- Now includes "Security Sector Extraction" for all Hitachi Drives

- Included media detection 2 from Geremia and Maximus Firmware
Stealth, this release just supports SS Extraction within Windows
without the need to re-flash your drive back and forth between
PLAY & RIP!

Flashing your drive
-------------------
FLASH23S.BAT automatically makes a complete backup of your firmware system

* To FLASH a drive, it must be in "Mode B" and have "Drive Letter"
* Then just run FLASH21 from "Command Prompt" while inside windows
* Prompt must be at the same directory with the rest of the files!

* FLASH23S needs two variables, the assigned "Drive Letter", and any 4
numbers for the BACKUP directory, use a new unique number like 1672

- This is used to make your BACKUP directory!

- For Example: FLASH23S.BAT H 1672

- Will cause the FLASH after running to have, a BACKUP directory
"X23-1672" and the program will store FIVE firmware files:

---- key.bin ---- DRIVE KEY /// DRIVE KEY
---- was.bin ---- Your drive before FLASH
---- gdrXX.bin ---- The untouch original fw
---- XX_23.bin ---- The patched Xtreme23 fw
---- now.bin ---- Your drive after FLASH!

- Where the XX in the above names will be the version of your Hitachi

* Program will not start unless a BACKUP is correctly made and stored!

* Flash will auto-detect your firmware build of your Hitachi drive.

* You can flash any drive, even "v1.1" or "f900" or your own hacks.

* System will check flashed firmware, and redo until 100% completed.

* Once you get the PASS / DONE line, you can shut-down the system.

FLASH16S.BAT is the same as above but, without F900 core, use this
if you dont want to extract SS with your drive.

Restoring your drive
--------------------
RESTORE.BAT automatically restores your drive back to original state

* To RESTORE a drive, it must be in "Mode B" and have "Drive Letter"
* Then just run RESTORE from "Command Prompt" while running windows.

* The new RESTORE does not need any backup, it will 100% restore your
drive back to "ORIGINAL" state as long as it is visible in Windows!

* Program will not start unless it detects the version of your Hitachi!

* You can restore any drive, even "v1.1" or "f900" or your own hacks.

* System will check flashed firmware, and redo until 100% completed.

* Once you get the PASS / DONE line, you can shut-down the system.

do I need these specific drives? I have a Sony Vaio and it has decent drives, and I don't really want to replace them.

Also, does this make the 360 capable of playing the original game?

All of my games are on Memorex I always use them. I also have the Hitachi drive, with a Pioneer 111D never had a problem. I tried Matrix which is really cheap but those did not work at all for me. So i stick to the Memorex.

I use memorex also, they work well. In all reality, you can use most SATA controllers to put your drive into modeB, it seems that SLAX supports a good majority of them.

I have xbox 360 hitachi driver vers 0047
I used the Slax process to put it in MOD B
with this SATA card
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=200612&cat=CCD
I used the OPA firmware..

MY problem was.. when I was in the middle of the process..flashing my firmware..
the XBOX360 auto-SHUT off....I am using the card wih RAID controller
I had to restore my firmware
AND Re-do everything again
I flashed my xbox..
I figured out that in mod B... my XBOX shuts off after 5 Minutes(- or +)
So I had to do all the process in this time window. Took me almost 4 min 30 sec to do everything... I almost could not do this..

WHY is the XBOX auto shuting off?
can somebody help me???
Thanks RJ....

Make sure your AV cable is plugged into the back of the 360, whether or not you have it plugged to a TV or not.

Hello all,

I tried getting one of my friends hitachi into mode b using the slax cd method,
but it jsut wasnt happening
it'd go through everything it needed to and get to the login screen,
but then when id try eject itd eject first time.

I went into my computers bios
Went under ADVANCED SETTINGS
Choose CHIPSET
Then selected "sumthing sumthing sumthing VIA VT 8251 etc etc"
The first line had RAID selected and i remeber reading somewhere that this causes the slax cd not to work. I changed it so now instead it was on IDE

Now if i try to put the hitachi drive into mode b will it work?

Hey Josh...
I am not the expert here but I just flashed my Hitachi V 0047.
Before I did not know that I have to buy I SATA card NON RAID.... But i bought one that only works with RAID... and I decided to give it a try.. the one I bouhght was
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=200612&cat=CCD
and I used the SLAX cd.

first ...
problably u know change the bios in your pc to BOOT 1st using the cd.
Put the slax cd, connect the xbox in your pc, use the internal SATA port in the card.
PS dont forget the plug the AV (video) cable in your xbox, i didnt do this last time and this gave to me a big HEADACHE.

Turn on the PC... when you see the 1st line (command) of the slax cd...TURN ON your xbox...

problably in show in your screen
spining drive.....

when u see this msg push eject on your xbox....

IF the tray goes back by itself problably u are in mod B
u can also check that
If u have to push eject 2times to open the tray it is in mod bee

u have to log in using the slax cd
I think the log is root
password toor
or something like that..it shows on your screen
after this type
REBOOT

the slax cd will be eject from your pc..
let the windows start
go to
my computer
click if mouse's right bottom
go to manage
click in system tools
and than
device manager
click DVD/cd-rom
your HITACHI has to be in the list

I used the OPA
to flash my xbox...
was good
Now I am just waiting to get my DVD +R DL

Hope this can help u
