First of all "Prodisc" discs (wich is what you seem to have)are not good discs, much less would i reccomend on a ps2 cuz the ps2 laser is somewhat delicate. Use the discs i reccomended above, either T.Y. or Verbatim. Read here for info on prodisc http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=134798

-------------------

Now that i noticed u said you have problems with CD (compact disc) do a Nero DISC INFO and post the info on the blank CD you are using.

I was kind of tired last night, i meant to say do a Nero QUALITY SCAN on a CD (compact disc)that you recently burned (i recommend you just burn a 600MB or more CD RIGHT NOW (so that its a fresh copy) and do the scan) and set the read speed to 8x and Post results.

Also post a QUALITY SCAN of a CD that your burned 2 months or more ago with the same discs (if you havent burned anything that long ago with those discs then just find one of the discs that your burned a while back out of that spindle)

Whenever I use "Disc Info" on a blank CD I see nothing. (does it with both my WHSmith, TDK and I think all other CDs)

I have the PSX game I burnt yesterday to a TDK disc, Gran Turismo.

.... and about two months ago I needed to re-install Windows MCE on a computer with a locking cd drive (it's fixed now) and I never wanted to risk the disc so I copied the disc and I still have it (the copy). It was burnt on this drive and when I installed in on my other machine it worked fine here is the result of a disc quilty test with a backup of Windows MCE CD #2:

The MCE backup disc was from a different spindle dunno what brand it is, it just says SIX on it as for the WHSmith and TDK spindle I have they are new.

It seems all my CDS freeze at 99% and give me that error even proper ones.

It should be able to read disc info. Either your drive is bad, or your ASPI layer is messed up, or another program is messing it up.

Did you use the CORRECT and ORIGINAL manufature's firmware for your DVD drive? you might also want to try to re-flash the firmware again.

Close out ALL the programs in the TASK BAR when burning. Also make sure no other programs are open.

--------------------

Or I would highly reccomend this step.....if you have another burner laying around try to burn it with the other burner. If it works fine with another burner then your drive's cd laser is messed up but the dvd laser is good.

highly reccomened step also....Or if you have another computer laying around stick the drive in that computer and see if it can get the DISC INFO.

All looks okay.

My sister has the same drive as me (NEC - I think it's a 3000A or summit doesn't have dual layer) but you see the point.

It's had Windows MCE newly installed only just yesterday how about tomorrow when I set up all the software I test out Nero on it? And if it works I'll burn a PSX game.

Like I said I can't access it till tomorrow, so I'll post updates then.

I'm going to listen to what you guys said and buy better media. I have ran out of DVD discs anyway can someone find me the best possible DVD-R disc, these will be used for PS2 games ONLY.

-edit- possibly just a 25pk, no need for 100 yet.

And maybe the best DVD Burner? SATA, possible?

I am looking at www.ebuyer.co.uk mainly as they have a fair amount and there fairly cheap and good for delivery.

I'll still test my CDS out on my sisters PC tomorrow.

Would it be easier/possible to play them from my computer over the network? Or use an external hard disk? HDDLoader or something?

If not I'll stick with the discs was just a suggestion.

As i said, unless you can be sure your drive is dead, i'd just try better media, preferrably verbatim or Ritek.
Make sure you properly* reflash the drive with the firmware from the rpc1 forums, or from NEC.

*Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable

Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

Do not turn off power during the updating process.

The_Fiend, your advice would be good if his DVDs were not burning good, but according to him they are burning fine, so it cant be any of the things u mentioned above.

If you cant get a DISC INFO out of the blank disc then you got serious problems. TDK blank CDs should deffinalty have a Media ID when u do a DISC INFO on a blank CD, if it doesnt show on the TDK blank CD then u got a serious problem. Im not sure what discs you are using, but to trouble shoot anything at all i would begin by using GOOD quality disks, T.Y discs or Verbatim recommended or if you are feeling lucky and want to take a gamble then get (50/50 chance of Grade A or Grade B media) TDK/FUGI/SONY 2nd, dont settle for anything less!! Grade B will work, but why settle for B when u can get A!! Riteks are good too, but there are too many fake Riteks out there to trust!!! i could sit here explaining but if you want more info on Media ID go here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Your burner should be able to read disc info and get the media ID regardless unless they are super duper cheap discs with no meida id or your burner doesnt support the disc. Either which way you look at it, if you get NO MEDIA ID out of a DISC INFO that means its time to put the discs off to the side (or worst case scenario your burner off to the side, most likely will be the discs though, we will trouble shoot the burner in a second).

If you havent learned by now the lesson here is GOOD MEIDA is IMPORTANT!!!

Once you have good meida and if the problem still exists then Either your drive is bad, or your ASPI layer is messed up some how. (this is taking into consideration that your NEC burner should be able to identify most media cuz its a NEC)

Like i said earlier, to trouble shoot and narrow it down u could do the following and let me know what happened (im taking it that by this point you have good disks)......

I would highly reccomend this step.....if you have another burner laying around try to burn the cd with the other burner in YOUR PC. If it gets the DISC INFO and burns fine with the other burner in YOUR PC then your NEC drive's cd laser is messed up but the dvd laser is good. If you continue to have problems with BOTH dvd burner drives then go to the next step below.

If you have another computer laying around stick the drive (the burner u "seem" to be having problems with)in the other computer (we will call this PC #2 ) and see if it can get the DISC INFO. If it can get the disc info then proceed to trying to burn a CD. If it works burns fine then you have a software problem on your other PC #1, just do a clean install of windows on PC #1. If it fails DISC INFO your burner's CD laser is going out and time to replace drive. If you get disc info and it just creates a bad burn it is your settings.

Those steps should solve your problem(s) for sure.

If you cant do the above for some reason then i suppose you can keep guessing as to what it is or you can just go buy another quality dvd burner and good discs and do a clean install of windows, that will work for sure.

I tried the blank disc in my sisters burner and DISC INFO worked came up with a lot of info on the CD.

I burnt it and it's certainly smoother, still feels laggy.

Maybe if I can get an hour to myself I'll take her burner and stick it in my computer and see if it still gets all the info.

Anyway I am planning on ordering some DVDS for my PS2 games, can you guys find me the best? Planning on ordering from one of these places I only really want 25pk (maybe 50pk if you can only get decent in that size)

"Taiyo Yuden" (aka TY) without a doubt is the best media out there.

I'll get DVD-R media from TY. Who shall I go for, for my next burner? (I don't want another NEC)

Perhaps, Pioneer, Sony?

IFthe problem was your laser dont feel bad, they all go out eventually.

Sony you are paying for the name, sony burners are really rebadged burners under the sony name, most likely they are lite-ons.

If you can find one pick up a Benq DW-1640 DW-1650 or DW-1655 (most people just call them by the number 1640 1650 1655), they are the BEST for writing quality!!! Plextor is also good but way overpriced. LGs i hear are good too, but i dont know the exat models, you would have to reseach the LG. Last reccomended choice would the the lite-on 165 series. (After that the Pioneer/Samsung/NEC but i wouldnt presonally get one as i think the liteon is better.)

(more than enough)

http://www.netpcdirect.co.uk/station2_cables.php
(PlayStation Component AV Cable) - (I have a 720p screen and it runs through SCART it doesn't look too good this should improve the picture alot?)

This stuff should be okay, right? I'll order tomorrow or when I know I can get delivery. I couldn't find any of the BenQ burners or anything too decent. Still SHOULD be okay, right?

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWAR...3550A-106.shtml

I used last time.

The site says

"ND-3550A is a half-height optical drive with 16x write speed that supports DVD plus, minus formats and +R/-R dual layer disc. It delivers high performance for writing and reading while being compatible with 10 optical disc varieties."

Half height, like a laptop?? Mine isn't. Wrong Firmware? :O

But just to be sure : http://www.de.nec.de/software/2344_FW_ND-3550A_106win.zip
That's the latest official firmware release from NEC, follow the instructions to the letter !

Nah still doesn't work even tried opening the drive up and looking for anything wrong, cleaned laser, I think it's dying, my last NEC drive was great I used to do a heck of a lot of DVD movie burning and one day, I was watching a movie I have copied and it kept jumping etc all my other movies I burnt would do it, so I replaced it -- looks like it came back.

I think I'm better with a new drive this NEC one can still be used on my second PC I was planning on buying an el cheapo one a month back for DVD Playback.

Will my listed stuff be okay? ... I'll still keep you guys updated on what's happening.

the benq DW1670 is good drive, but unless you really need the DVD RAM feature the 1650 and 1655 are better as far as quality burns. To put it in perspective for you, the 1650/1655 woud be a Perfect 10 and the 1670 would be a 9 as far as quality burns. If your happy with that then good enough. Regarless the 1670 will be better than your old NEC.

as i mentioned earlier the 1640 is just as good as the 1650 and 1655 as far as writing qualtiy, just that the 1640 burns dual layers discs a tad bit slower. if interested check out this for the 1640 wich is rare to find online. Trust me these will be sold out in less than 3 days for SURE, maybe in less than 12hrs so buy one now if you want it.

After awhile looking I found that a local store 'might' have the DW1650. I don't like having things shipped from the USA.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product...Q/DW1650/583876

I might take a walk down there later.
