I've updated my firmware to 301 - yet all DVDs I burn (using Nero 6 and other progs) that are supposed to be 4x will only burn at 2x. I've tried several different media reported in this forum that are 'supposed' to burn at 4x on the GSA 4040B. My question is this - I have an LG cd burner as master and the GSA 4040 DVD burner as slave - would it make any difference if I made the GSA 4040 the master and the LG cd burner as the slave? I'm dying to burn at 4x - one of the main reasons I bought it for. However - all told - what I have burned at 2x works beautifully - I'm just a speed freak and would like to gain the extra computer time by jumping to 4x.

Thanks for any help.

Hard to say, but LG does advise that it should be set as Master on the second IDE channel.

As far as burning at 4X (not worth the extra expense to me), the cheapies won't cut it. But remember also that there are 2 types of Princo's, they look the same, one type is supposed to work but they do drop off at the end. If you got the dough the Taiyo Yuden -R's (TYG01) burn at 4X but are way to pricey. Verbatim Data Life Plus(but these could also be Mitsubishi Chemical which burn at 4X but show errors at the end) and Fuji (barcode on single is 74101 75241) are TYG01's. But again they might change makers the next time around. These 2 brands can sometimes be found on sale. For now I will stick to RitekG03's (2x), good cheap media with error free burns as reported by Nero CD/DVD Speed test. Unfortunately the RitekG04's (4x) burn at 4X but show errors in the middle and the end. Let see what the next firmware update does.

Listen people I use DVD-Pro DVD-r 4x from supermediastore. Burns at 4x, no problems(I have burned 100 w/no mistakes). 25 pack for $26.00. Works on Xbox, PS2, all my DVD players. Had the LG 4040B since August and I have tried all kind of 4x media, this is the only one that is not expensive and burns all the time at 4x.

PEACE

Hey dialeck,

What kind of results did you get with any tests? Did you run them thru Nero CD/DVD Speed to check for errors? RitekG03's burn at 4X but the resultant error curve is unacceptable (RitekG03 2X's show very good test results). It's important to know what 4X media burns/reads well, not just the speed it's burning at. What do they ID as? Princo?

MysticE,

I simply sit down and watch every movie I burn. This is how I test for errors. No skipping, freezing, or stopping on any movies. That's a success to me. Yes DVD-Pro are made by Princo but I have tried both and DVD-Pro are better quality. If watching a movie from start to finish is not the best way to test, please tell me what is.

PEACE

Not just the media to consider :(
The IDE drivers being used and the Motherboard chipset seem to be a major major influence.
ie I hate to disappoint you all but much of this great advice is a waste I believe.

With this drive I think if you cross your toes "just right" it might just provide consistent performance - yes I will be replacing it.

I could not even upgrade the firmware to 301 until I built a clean win2k system (on the same PC) and used default/generic Msoft drivers. Once I did the firmware update, TDK DVD-RW disks would work. Running 300 firmware, TDK DVD-RW would not work.

Switching back to my normal win2k system (same machine) with gigabyte IDE drivers TDK DVD-RW will now not work.

Princo DVD-R seems to work even with 300 firmware and gigabyte IDE drivers. TDK DVD+R seemed to work also.

If I get some consistency in operation I will post DVD media details from the Nero tool.

My System is Celeron 766MHz on gigabyte GA-60XE mobo (Intel 815 chipset) with 256MBRAM

For 2X burns the RitekG03's are almost a perfect match for the LG. They can be had for <$1. No reason to guess.

Here's a pic from Nero CD/DVD Speed, a nice read from start to finish.

Anyone know what is a good DVD-RAM to use and where I can get it in Canada, for the 4040B. I just got 7 Memorex type-2s and can't get them to work.
Only 1 disk recognized so far out of 4, fails format. I got ripped off anyway by this "NEW, open box, as is, no returns" from E-Shop Outlet. One box of three had "bad" written right on it. Bastards!

I'm still on my first 25 DVD-Rs of STI Certified Products Inc., www.sticertified.com, with no problems. Got in Canada. CA$40.

and for percy2000
"Prassi software does not see my LG 4040B DVD burner as a recordable drive"
If you havn't found it yet, the 4040B isn't on the compatbility list, sorry, can't remember where I found it. I tried Prassi myself, with the latest engine I could find, there is other software that uses that 'engine' too so I assume they will not see the drive either. :(

I've used both Maxell and TDK DVD-RAM discs..

Sometimes problems to add data to disc with explorer. Just got stupid error message "Disc is write protected, please remove protection or try another one". Then I remove disc, insert in, remove disc and insert.. so on.. after 3-4 times removing I get it working.

Also I wonder why this winxp system sometimes automatically switches DMA mode OFF for my LG-drive. When DMA is off, writing is very slow.

Only way to get DMA back to ON is to remove "Secondary IDE channel" from control panel and install it back (or reboot). Strange.

If XP has trouble accessing any drive (the errors you get) it will kick turn off DMA after a few unsuccessful attempts. Have you disabled XP's native Roxio burning plugin?

Princo 4X 3-pack is a very good buy. I boight them @4.88. I have so far burnt 9 packs without error and the speed is truely 4X. My LG was bought at CAD146+tax, the firmware is A301.

I tested mitsumi 4X 25-spindle. The real speed is 2X. so I returned them to FS.

Hope it's not too late to Canadian users. I bought bunch of Princo 4X 3-PK DVD-R from CompuSmart at C$3.88 on boxing day. It's the best and most reliable media for 4040B.

Hi, a couple questions.

Is there any way to tell what firmware the drive currently has? I bought mine at future shop (canada) on boxing day. I've burnt maxell dvd-r's at 4x with no problems, and memorex dvd+rw at 2.4x with no problem. However the drive fails burning memorex dvd-rw at 1x, with a 'track read error'!! Not a big deal but I don't want to flash my firmware if I don't have to - how can I tell my current firmware? TIA!

Well I found the answer to my own question using nero's infotool, my firmware version is A300 - is it worth flashing to A302?

"Is it worth flashing to A302?"

My answer - yes - I also live in Canada and when I do find the more expensive brands of DVD media (sony/maxwell) I'll buy them - but I also like jumping over to FutureShop and picking up a nice spindle of 50 cheap DVD -Rs like e3 Works and the new update (302) finally lets me burn them at 4x.

NOTE: Only the E3 Works Brand in the spindles burn at 4X - the smaller packs of 10 with jewel cases still will only burn at 2x.

Good point - I did buy the media I'm using at future shop, but it was $15 for a 5 pack of maxell 4X DVD-Rs which is a little pricey if you go through a lot. I'll consider it, but I'm always of the motto 'if it aint broke, don't fix it ;)'
