Instead of wasting money and waiting for shipping etc... on a LG drive.
Just my opinion, no flaming. :D
I'd love to know how you did that!
Just follow this guide to back up games using wifi through the homebrew channel.
Sweet. Thanks for the link. I'll give that a shot before I order myself a DVD burner. Mine pooped out a few weeks ago and it's a bit of a hassle dumping the image to my pc, then transferring it to my laptop thru my wifi.
EDIT: wait, if I'm reading correctly, it almost sounds like what I'm doing right now. I'll read thru the guide first though.
EDIT #2: Ok, just read thru the guide and I do still need to buy a burner. I guess this is meant to save you from buying the LG drive, which I already bought :( .

Any good DVD burner which supports Dual layer burning but having said that there are only 1 or 2 games which are dual layer all the rest are just standard DVD's I have a Sony DL DVD burner which is a couple of years old and works like a charm also if your going to burn backups be sure to turn off any decripters you have running like DVD9 or Slyfox as this can effect the burn process. The wii reads DVD's at about 3-4x speeds I get 100% burn success burning at 3x using imgburn software. Also for the media, belive it or not I have no problems using Tesco's branded DVD-R 8x disc's. Never any probs and they are on sale for ?3.99 for a 25 spindle pack this week.....:)

Hi guy's
First off i would like to thank everyone for the great help and advice.
I have ben backing up my wii games for about 4 months now on a lg gdr 8162b with no poblems, then a coupe of days ago i got an error you may have a faulty drive, when try to dump with raw dump 2.0, same way as ive always done it, ive since been try to find out what is wrong, ive tried a restore as far back as nov 08, tried running in safe mode, tried uninstalling driver, nothing seems to work, i did manage to dump one game inbetween trying all the things ive listed, which makes me think the dvd rom is actually faulty and just happened to work intermittently that once? it does read cd's just not dvd's and wii games.
Can anyone help, should i buy a another lg gdr or try to get this one fixed? i dont just want to buy one and still get the same error message, do you guys think it the dvd rom broke or something else, like some sort of software problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The contents of this file could become outdated very quickly because the modding scene is exploding right now. I will do my best to keep it updated so if you see the date is really old shoot me an email and I will update it or at least say that nothing really revolutionary has happened in the modding scene. Click below to access the tutorial on backing up your Wii ad Gamecube discs. Remember that to play the backups you will need a modchip! The modchip is rapidly changing and I will be outlining this in my next article which is due sometime later this week.
First step in copying your games for backup purposes is to get the right software and hardware. You will need one of the following DVD drives to copy games(no others will work). I received a pm that some people were having trouble locating the drives. Newegg no longer sell these drives for some reason.
For more information on ordering these drives follow this link: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/563020
* LG-8164b
* LG-8163b
* LG-8162b
* LG-8161b
Personally I have the 8164b and have had zero problems. I'm sure the others are fine also.
Once you install this drive into your computer you will need to download a few applications.
*Raw dump 2.0
.net Framework 2.0
* Software to unzip the Raw Dump files.Winrar
Once you download the files above then right-click on the rawdump2.0.rar and select "Extract to rawdump2.0\"
this will make a folder on your desktop called rawdump2.0.

Now insert your Wii or Gamecube game into the LG drive that you have ordered and installed. Then open the rawdump2.0 folder and double click on the rawdump2.0.exe file.

After doing this you will be presented with the following interface. If your wondering what all the buttons are next to me close and minimize buttons it is a program called UltraMon for multiple monitor setups. Just ignore this. I am also running the Zune Windows XP Theme.

The next step is to just click "Start Dump." On my computer this process took just about 2.5 hours. When it is complete you will be greeted with a nice finished message. The file it creates will be in the same directory as the rawdump.exe file. It should be called "Game Name.iso." This ISO is an image of the actual game and is ready to be burned. You can burn this image with many different applications, but I will be providing screenshots for Nero Burning Rom.
This step is very important. You need to check your file and see how many KB large it is. To do this Right-Click on your iso(this is in your rawdump directory) and select properties. It should say,
Nintendo Wii ISO size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes).
Nintendo Gamecube ISO size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)
All Nintendo Wii and Gamecube images will be this exact byte size. If your Wii image is off by any then you have a bad dump and need to try again.
So next step is to open Nero.
The first step once nero opens it to just cancel out of the create new dvd/cd/etc dialog. Once you have exited from this dialog you go to Recorder->Burn Image.

After making it this far you are almost done. When you click burn image you will be asked to locate the image. The image will be located in your Rawdump2.0 folder. For me, this is on the desktop.

Select the game that you have dumped with rawdump and click open. You will then be presented with the below dialog. Make sure to select a relatively slow burn speed at first to attempt to prevent DRE's(Disc Read Errors). These seem to be common among people that do not use high quality dvd's. For a thread dealing with media check here.

I hope this mini-guide helps you. If you have any questions or I said something wrong please post a comment below. Also stay tuned because as soon as my tri-wing driver arrives I will have a detailed modding tutorial using the Cyclowiz modchip.

Help required for someone just new to computers please. My kids have a Wii and I am trying to down load games from the likes of mininova and want to burn them to dvd. How do I do this and step by step please if anyone can help? I have read forums and been advised to buy DVD-R Verbatim disc's and write at a speed of x4 but that's all I know so far. Once one game has downloaded it consists of many files but don't know how to burn then in the correct manor onto dvd to be able to play in our chipped Wii console?

You need winrar to extract those many files.
Right-click the first file and extract
Then burn the ISO image you get with imgburn at 4x.

Or you could soft mod your wii to play backups.

mookielou, why would you post this here?
but yes, you do need those. A triwing is needed to open your wii, (I tried with a flathead and stripped a screw) and you need wires to solder the key to wii. If they are component video cables (a thick, 3 pronged cable that goes into your TV) then you don't need them because they come with your wii.

If its not a question of backing up games, then start your own thread in the Wii section.
That is what he meant.

I know I am a newbie but I appreciate anyone that can help. I have not been in the backup/mod scene since the days of the PS1.
Thanks again!

Another alternative to backing up wii games is over the wifi using Homebrew
