I just got a missing leg Wii.
I will do the mod if i have to, but is there the slightest possibility in the near future that a mod chip will be released to circumnavigate the soldering directly onto the IC part?

Since the mod chips need to talk to that chip via those three pins i doubt there will be anyway around it. Nintendo was actually pretty smart to cut those pins.

Yes. That is correct. Well they aren't connectors. They are tiny copper traces that run into the IC's internal workings.

Hi, wii4free

What is the size of wire should be using to do the job?

N.T.

A 34AWG or 36AWG Beldon Magnet Wire should do the trick.

Ihave the cyclowiz V2 and the D2B wii with cut legs.
I installed the wiz and the led on the wiz just blinks.
with no disk in the wii when I power up it should blink for 20 sec.and then go solid on (no more blinking) I double checked my connections and resoldered all connections and still blinking.

I suspect I have a defective wiz and emailed the seller to exchange it.
I haven't heard from them yet.

here are pixtures of my mod:

the 3 pictures above:
#1 I used double sided tape under the bare wires connected to the cut pins on the D2B. the wire is a strand taken from a IC jumper wire.
I am not sure about the gauge but it is alittle thicker than a hair.
for referance the blue wire in the picture is #30 gauge wire wrap wire.

#2 shows the wire and tool used

#3 a closer shot

here is a little hint/warning for you if you are going to use the dremel tool. The black material is pretty easy to grind away, when you get close to the pins SHUT THE DREMEL OFF and use the dremel as a sanding/file stick to expose the pins and take your time.

after the pins are exposed use a little flux and put a little solder on them. Now put a little flux on a piece of solder brade and remove the excess solder on the pins (the pins should look silver now) then do the same to the wire you are going to connect.
now place the wire on the pin and just tap the soldering iron to the wire/pin and now move the wire a little and see if it got soldered (if the wire stays on the pin) I don't reccomend the tug test.

TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!

Hey, I just recently bought a good dremel with a cone bit like the one mrgreen2 has used. I tried it on an old xbox mobo that I used and it worked flawlessly. I grinded off just barely enough to make a solid connectoin with small gauge wires. I have a question though concerning the IC chip: How far do you have to go in order for the IC chip to malfunction and not work? Also, does dremeling harm the IC chip in anyway?

#1: There is no specific amount, just go as far as you need, look at all the mods done and do the same.

#2: the vibration from the dremel could break the thin wires in the center of the chip. once that wire breaks the chip must be replaced.

note: some of the D2B chips with cut legs stil have enough of a stub that some modders didn't have to grind the chip, They were able to reconnect to the stub. look into that mod first.

Is the general consensus that any new Wii's purchased in the US will have the wires missing? I am interested in purchasing a wii in the next few days, and installing a wiikey. Should I just expect the 3 wires missing, or is it up in the air?

Thanks!

Does no one know of this little gem:

http://www.atvgc.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=7&extra=page%3D1

please, stop waisting your money on an expensive modchip when you can use a great homebrew modchip that acts EXACTLY LIKE THE WIIKEY! Its only $4.00 compared to some $20-40 plus shipping modchip. And oh yea, did I say that it works with the wii update DVD?

Dont be a cheapskate and buy a homebrew modchip. Work it out already, if everyone brought the rip offs then there would be no further development, no updates etc.. 40 bucks is cheap in anyones book..

I hope someone releases a new chip for the unmodifiable version...

cheapskate? I'm just saving money. I probably do have more money than you, but lets not get into that. The point is, it does the same thing, for less. Same solder points.

You point about future releases makes no sense....the reason there is no new release for the unmodifiable version is because every chip NEEDS to talk with those 3 pins on that IC chip. Not because everyone is buying alternatives

Here is an example of my work on a no leg B2B chipset

I use Kynar Wire AWG32 for all the installation I'm doing
Do not go too deep inside the chipset otherwise you could damage the wire bond between the silicon and the lead frame. If it happens, unmoddable for ever

Only gring 1 to 2 mm. Enought is not needed if soldering skill are OK

Thanks

Generally, it takes between 30 to 45 minuts for the whole process
