Yes it will fine on a NTSC-J Wii, however you will get duplicate channels.
To avoid duplicate channels, follow this method: (Copied from my post at GBAtemp)
FOR NTSC-J USERS:

I have a NTSC-J 3.0J Nintendo Wii updated online with the latest version.
I tried the two disk method earlier, and it WORKS FOR NTSC-J OWNERS
There is just ONE thing you must change.

1. Download the game
2. Extract the downloaded files with WinRar into an ISO
3. Make TWO NEW FOLDERS.
4. Copy the original ISO and paste one ISO into EACH of the new folders you have created.
5. Run ONE of the copyed ISOs (leave the original alone...!) with Brick Blocker.
6. Run the OTHER copyed ISO in Region Frii (convert FROM USA to JAP)
7. Now burn TWO discs. ONE with the ISO that was "BrickBlocked" and the second disc with the one that was "Region Friid"
8. Now you have two copies of Metroid Prime 3, right?
9. Try to insert the BRICK BLOCKED game. Black screen. No problem.
10. Insert the Region Friid game. It will now say "Initiating Wii System Update" and you can press "OK". Press OK, then on the next message press "I accept".
11. NOW! Let the update run for SOME SECONDS. Let perhaps 10-15% of the bar get blue, then UNPLUG your wii console!!!!!!
12. Insert the power again, turn on your Wii. You do NOT have double channels now.
13. Insert the game that you Brick Blocked (the one that used to give you a black screen...). Let it load, and BOOM; it works. Now you have a working Metroid Prime game and a non-doubled Wii

I let mine update for Twelve (12) seconds before turning it off.

----------------------

An update from Cocytean's summary earlier
All users:
The game updates your Wii to allow it to be played, but does NOT contain a firmware update on it - your firmware version will remain the same.
If you Brickblock the file, the game WILL NOT PLAY - the update is necessary for it to be run.
The game has been confirmed to work on Pal Wiis several times, including those with Wiikeys, but at the cost of duplicating the weather and news channel.

To Work around the duplicate channels,
PAL Users follow the above instructions, BUT
6. Run the OTHER copyed ISO in Region Frii (convert FROM USA to PAL)

NTSC-J Users follow the above instructions, BUT
6. Run the OTHER copyed ISO in Region Frii (convert FROM USA to JAP)

Additional Information:
the Brick Blocker designer is on holiday, so there's no chance of him doing a work around this update any time soon.

What do the duplicate channels do?
They are non-functional. Your original channels will work as normal though.
These duplicated channels cannot be removed, and cannot be accessed. However, you can move the channels to a different location on your Wii channels should the aesthetics of duplication displease you.
No-one knows for sure yet whether or not this is an attempt by Nintendo to 'flag' modded Wiis - more likely is some differing region pieces of code are arguing with one another. All other channels, Internet connection and the like work as normal.

What does interupting the update do?
We arent sure yet, and no-one knows for sure until, and if Nintendo take action. In the past, many users have turned off their power when updating (whether intentional or unintentional) and they have been able to update at a later stage without any problems.

@slping247

I asked a Mod to edit your post above.

I created this guide so others would know how to protect from a region brick. The stupidest thing you could do when updating any firmware is to disrupt the power during the update.

So could you please edit your post if not hopefully a Mod will.

Okay so my dad bought a Wii from China and I assumed it's chipped with the wiikey because it played the burnt copy of Wii Sports and American games okay before. Now today when I got Metroid Prime 3: corruption and because I do not understand Japanese I basically said yes to anything it ask. Now my Wii is semi-bricked, is there anyway to fix it? I really want to make it back to normal!!

My post helps protect PAL and NTSC-J users from Semi-bricking their Wii by putting in Metroid Prime 3 which is a NTSC-U disk.
I dont see why it should be removed, as it prevents a semi-bricking (duplicate channels).

If you have a perfectly fine PAL/NTSC-J Wii and you put in metroid to play, it will update and cause a duplicate channels semi brick. My post above protects it from that.

Also, this method has proved to work for MANY users world wide. Do a simple search of forums and you will find that is the case. The method works fine, as it has been proven to work, and no-one has reported problems with this technique. What are your grounds for requesting a removal of my post?

Theres still a greater chance of bricking the Wii when trying to do the above method. Don't play Metroid Prime if you have a PAL or NTSC(J) Wii and are afriad of semi-bricking or adding extra channels. But telling someone to unplug their Wii during a firmware update is just plain stupid.

The Quote below should say enough:

They say themselves they don't know what actually happens when disrupting the power during updating firmware. Even tho many users have disrutpted power during the update and have had no issues. What about the users that have done this and had problems?

So why the hell do it and take that chance?

Sorry for trying to help.

Not giving a crap is just plain ignorance. I'm trying to help, just like you, but you cant tell me not to post something that has worked for not only by myself, but for many MANY others world wide. You can post and ask people not to listen to me and they can decide for themselves.

Sorry to say, my post is here to stay unless a moderator specifically asks me to remove it.
As far as I'm aware, my post does not breach any rules, is not spam and stays on topic, so you have no grounds in making such a ridiculous request.

Also, I'm giving advice to those that have an unbricked NTSC-J/PAL wii but want to play Metroid. Its a technique to avoid semibricking your wii. Its better than the advice you're giving...simply "dont play". I think I speak for many when I say many NTSC-J/PAL gamers want to play metroid without having to wait.

no, i wont ask you to remove it, you say it worked for you and others so thats fine. Anyone reading it can see there is another member warning against your method possibly damaging their system, so it's really up to the individual to decide if they want to try it or not. thats the beauty of having a forum, anyone can post their opinions, and anyone else can contest them. Since I know nothing of the psp, I would be neglecting my job here if i just ran in and removed your post based on someone else's opinion of your methods, and on the same token, i would also be neglecting my job if i didn't draw attention to the fact that there is someone that disagrees with your methods. i do enough babysitting around here, i choose to let the readers decide what they want to do.

carry on.

Just to make sure I understand:

I have a Japanese Wii. Not sure about the version... I updated from a Japanese Dragon Quest Swords once... Then I updated from a US Sims Pets, although I think it was suppose to be the same version.

Semi-bricked. Accessing the options gets me an Opera browser page.

I can put in Metroid and it will not harm the Wiis game playing function? That is all I care about.

No you wont. You will just get duplicate weather/news channels if you havent already got them. If you want to avoid them, read above but decide for yourself.

I have a PAL console and have not yet updated from 2.2E. I was one of the people who ran Big Brain Academy U-NTSC back a few monts ago and had the News & Weather channels duplicated, but I did not have any other problems. I haven't found info about this anywhere, what the 3.0E update does to such systems. Can anyone help me out please?

Is there any chance to find out whether a Wii disc's region code is NTSC-U, NTSC-J or PAL? I mean not by looking at the cover but rather by checking the data contained on the disc.

Cheers.

Go to the first page of this thread and find the link to Wii Brick Blocker. Download the 1.3 version of it. There is a button you can select that says (READ INFO) after you load the Wii ISO select that option and it will tell you what region the game disc is.

(Yes it tells you the original game region even if it has been patch for another)

Just went to a shop in Malaysia which sells Wiis modded with Wiikey.

I chose a NTSC-U Wii.

1) I tried Metroid Prime NTSC-U - a message came up "updating..." - game worked
2) I tried Mario Strikers - PAL - the famous error message appeared- the game didn't work not did all other games we tried from then...

They got a second machine (the first one was obiously screwed up)

1) I tried Paper Mario - NTSC-U - a message came up "updating... - game worked

2) I tried Mario Party 8 - PAL - The error message occured. Game didn't work nor did any other game from then on.

I feel bad having tried that at a shop and happy at the same time. Obviously in both cases the Wii got bricked.

Now, I am a real noob when it comes to this. I thought when you load Metroid Prime (same region code as the Wii) the game would automatically install v.3.0U of the firmware. So why got the system bricked when I tried the PAL Version of Mario Strikers AFTER that?? I thought I read it updates a the firmware 2.XXE. Since the Wii was already 3.0. Why did this happen?

As for the second try I was not too sure. I actually expected that Mario Party 8 would be the NTSC-U Version. Later I checked the game cover and found out that it's multi. Therefore PAL... :-/

Anyhow the guys from the shop will call me after they have a machine where all games I wanted do work. Hope they don't destroy some more. It's really THAT easy....

Any suggestions what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening again??

Thanks.

@overdog51

If your trying to play PAL games make sure that the REGION OVERRIDE is enabled on the Wiikey. If its disabled then you will get the error messge when playing PAL or NTSC(J) backups.

You enable the REGION OVERRIDE with the Wiikey setup disc.

By the way the Metroid prime 3 is not a 3.0 update.

@larrylje:

To get this straight for me:

1) I load the Wiikey Setup Disk 1.2
2) I enable Region Override
3) I load Metroid Prime 3 and accept the update
4) After that I can play ANY game that was released before Metrois Prime 3 (i.e. that has the same or a lower firmware update on it), no matter if it is al PAL or a NTSC-P game (including Mario Strikers which seemed to have caused some trouble for other users)

Please confirm. Thanks again.

I would suggest downloading Wii brick Blocker that is on the first page of this guide and use it on game disc with updates on them that are PAL and NTSC(J) games. You don't need to worry about updates that are on NTSC(U) game disc since you have a NTSC(U) Wii.

All you have to do is load the ISO into the Wii brick Blocker program and patch it. This will disable the update on the disc.
