Sony finally gotten smart and did not tell anyone about this,
It's not in the press release that went with firmware 1.90 , but it's there.
this is how you do it :
My first post and it's a good one :
on your pc with all your *.avi movies you start up a media server (i prefer nero-media-home , but the other ones should work also (not tested).
now on your PS3 go to the media server and find the map with the avi-movies , click on the triangle and copy the wanted movie(s).
the movies will now transfer to your PS3-harddisk.
when it finished you can actually turn off the PC ,
and start watching avi's from your PS3.
I turned the pc off to show i'm not streaming the movies from the pc, but play them directly from the PS3-harddisc.
weird thing is that Sony never told anyone about this new feature , while this feature could definetly boost sales of the PS3 a bit more because the xbox360 can't play them from their harddrives.
I had some disbelieve of other boards but i'd say
go and try for yourselves.

thats sick... they need to make it to where it plays all video formats. i dont care if its streamed but that would be hella sick... i hate converting. it doesnt have the best quality when u do so. but this is a step foward to avi format... ima try it then if it works ima be back to say THANKS... lol.

I sure wish I new that before. I gues I never tried. but I sure will when I get home. I have been converting my movie file to mp4 and trnsferring them through a memory stick. That will work out better if they allow you to do the same with video.ts dvd movies files(not sure of the actual format, not in front of me) . But there may be an issue because you would have several files for one movie. u would just have to click on the next file to play the rest of the movie. I tried to do that with streaming to my movie folders but it wouldnt play all of the files. I got a coule of trailers to play but the actual movie files woldnt play. I just hate to have to convert the movies to mp4 in order to play them on the PS3. that means I have two of the same movie saved on my pc but at different formats

Its not that it plays AVI, AVI is a container for the audio and video streams, and its what them streams are encoded in is the important factor.

Yeah... but the only problem with streaming is you cant fast forward or rewind more than 1.5x witch really sucks... so i just copy it and watch it then delete it.... unless its worth keeping.

Actually you can fast forward past 1.5x. You would have to press the R2 button very fast and hold on the second time you pressed it. Or maybe that only works on the MP4 format video files. not sure but I am able to fast forward and rewind past 1.5x
Also to anyone if you tried to copy the video files or anything from your pc, you will have to cancel anything that you may have running at the time. You cant just hit the PS button and navigate through the XMB and copy from your PC while the other is running in the background. the copy feature will be greyed out.

How many more times... its the streams contained within the AVI, AVI is a container.
Rip a dvd place the single file on the PS3 and it will play, and the extension for that is .VOB, its the encoded streams that matter.
