Hi guys,
I have this one problem following the instruction's, btw I have successfully done BenQ and Samsung drives before. A friend gave me an Hitachi 78FK, I followed the instructions Using Slax, ModeB etc.. I got a problem for the drive to read an original disc for the Toolbox 4.6 to get the FW. after unable to do so, I put everything back together and booted the xbox, the system is unable to read any discs, it just spins slowly then stops, and xbox says the disc is unreadable.

any ideas?

sounds like a knackered laser to me m8, if you can fit another laser, maybe from your 360 just to test your m8's xbox, if you have'nt altered the firmware and theres no red lights, and you never tested the console before you tried to flash it thats wat i'd say it was,the laser!

thats what I was thinking too, I didn't alter the FW, to bad I don't know how to change the laser, also heard I might have to desolder a chip to get the original FW, is there anyone that someone knows who I can send the drive to that might help me?

the lasers are very easy to change, and you'd only need to have the tsop chip removed and read if you bricked the drive, and you cant of bricked it cos there is disc activity, there are only a couple of screws and a ribbon cable to diconnect on the laser, so i'd defo go down that road 1st.

Do I need exactly same SATA PCI adapter or I can buy something else?

if you don't wanna mess with Wxripper, then ig there's no other way
My DVD drive zonked out in my 360 - does this mean if I find a kreon flashed drive that I wont have to go through all of this hasssle of having to flash a new dvd drive when I put it in the 360? Because to be honest with you, I have no idea where to even start with that. (My 360 is moded by the way if that matters)

no, you still need to find a new dvd drive on ebay or something, replace the drive key, then flash it.

First, I want to thank you development types for coming up with these softwares which almost get me to where I want to be.

I'm a PC tech just getting started modding the Xbox360. I have an Elite with the Hitachi 79. I'm doing the WxRipper hotswap backup method, thought flashing the 360 drive would be the easy part.

I was able to get Mode B with Slax, as near as I can tell by the eject button. The drive recognized in Windows, I played a DVD and got the video from a 360 game. However, the Maximus 3.1 did not see any drive at all.

I understand the chip replacement bit, but have no fine skills with a soldering gun. I can make one solder joint, but two little ones right next to each other does not make me happy. I thought the problem was getting Mode B, and for Windows to see the drive, which I had success with. Bummer.

Was this drive specifically engineered to prevent firmware updates? I've never run into hardware so difficult to upgrade. This would lead me to believe that a software-only solution may never happen, and I either need to give up, or start practicing with the iron.

Opinions? Reason to have hope for the future? Bigger hammer?

Ok, well, it sounds as if you're definitely on the right track. If you've managed to get the drive into modeb. That should be all you have to do. So, I'm assuming as I've never flashed a 79, that you had to solder on the chip to get it there. Correct me if I've misinterpreted that.

If you've succeeded in getting your drive into modeb, then I believe that your only problem left is the software. In order to flash your hitachi 79, you will need to use Maximus Firmware Tool box 4.5 or higher. This will, however, flash your drive with iXtreme (either 1.2rev2, or 1.4, depending on if you use FW toobox 4.5 or 4.6). This could present a problem seeing as you are using the WXripper method. So my first suggestion would be to abandon that method of copying games, and spend the extra 30 bucks on either an xbox 360 drive (off of ebay) or a samsung SH-D162C drive flashed with Kreon 1.00 in combination with Xbox Backup Creator 2.8 in order to create pre-stealthed copies that will play on an ixtreme console.

Like I said before, I'm unfamiliar with 79's so I'm not sure about the hole modeb thing. You may want to seek more advice on that.

Yes, the 79 is definitely designed to be difficult to upgrade. That was the purpose, afterall ;)

No, I have not yet soldered the chip, no changes made to the drive at this point.

That's what is confusing me, I thought that this drive would not go into Mode B or recognize in Windows without using the hardware chip kit.

Everything was OK except Maximus would not recognize the drive, though I used Ver 3.1. Looks like 4.6 is worth a shot.

The WxRipper method is no good with this firmware? Crap. I've used the SS Merger for the SS, DFI, and PMI, still no sale??

One other tidbit, I did not connect the AV cable to the Xbox, but that appears to affect recognition rather than flashing.

Am trying to keep expenditures to a minimum, as available dollars are already there.

Ok. Well, use FW toobox 4.6. That should get you going. When you flash your drive DO have your AV cable plugged in, because without it plugged in, the 360 automatically shuts off after like 5 min. That could be bad if you were in the middle of flashing.

This also has me confused, because the entire purpose of the chip is to get the drive into mode b. So try all of what I've told you, and if you manage to flash it, let me know, because that would be flippin crazy cool lol.

Ok, the WxRipper method, so long as you have the CORRECT SS, DMI, and PFI files will work. However, you'll find that it's very difficult to find the correct files online. It's up to you, but I would highly recommend spending 30 extra bucks for a kreon drive.

Well. 4.6 recognizes the drive, but "cannot read" when trying the FW dump, either classic or Raw. The tray eject and close commands in toolbox work, XP sees the drive and will play a DVD or the Xbox360 video.

Tray opens with one button push but does open again by itself after being closed, either with the button or manually.

crap, crap, crappity crap. Will make a few more tries.

Is the drive supposed to recognize in XP and function without being in Mode B? Any other way to tell I'm in Mode B other than the button? Pretty sure it did take more than one press before the reboot to Windows.

Close but no cigar. Still bangin' away.

Still no joy, but some hopeful info.

Slax definitely alters the button function. One press to open, two to close (with auto re-open), three presses closes it with no auto re-open. Button goes back to normal when the xbox360 is re-booted.

still get "cannot read from drive", have tried with DVD-movie (homemade) and original 360 game, zilch.

Either I'm not all the way into Mode B, or their is some other blockage to reading the FW.

Well if it was easy, what would be the fun in that?

Appreciate any ideas, but I think I'm at a dead end without doing some picky-fine soldering.

Ok. Interesting. New theory. You're in modeb, or else you couldn't see the drive in windows. However, what I think the chip does is it enables the drive for software rewrite, so I still believe you'll need the chip.

hi m8 if you flash your drive with older firmware, you will definitley get banned, your better off using the latest ixtreme firmware, that should stop you getting banned, for the time being at least

This SATA PCI adapter (SYBA SY-VIA-150 PCI SATA / IDE Combo Controller Card, Non Raid - Retail. In case of bad link.).

is this the only possible adapter ? I have Via VT6421 Raid controller, Would it work if I try to flash hitachi 79 ?

And as I can see you don't have to add any chips to 79drive anymore..... NICE.. :)
