ANEXIS, Thanks for the heads up! I tried friidump on 2 other drives and they both worked fine, one dumped in 1 hr 9 min the other in 50 minutes (way faster than the 816X drives). They both made iso files of the correct length. I will burn one of them to disk sometime this week and see if they work. I am also checking some other drives to see how they work. I will post all of the info as you did if anyone wants to see it or I will post just the drive info to save space.

Just reading the friidump thread on the site...
Doesn't sound like this is uncommon, friidump reports a successful dump, but the ISO is unreadable by the wii....
Is the iso dumped with the NEC drive readable in the wii?
I'd imagine when you burn it, you'll find it might not be the case...

BRIGHTSPK Looks like Friidump does exactly what you say, it will make an iso even without a disk in the drive so when you burn the disk it does not work. Having said this there may be some drives that do work the only way to know is by experimentation.

Look at the top of the drive over the jumpers on the metal portion cs = computer select(not advisable) sl = slave (good if you have another cd/dvd installed) ma = master (good if the only drive on the secondary ide will be the 816X).

I haven't tested the image yet on my wii because it isn't modded just yet, i will be testing it sooner or later, i just got a mail from the shop that my chip will be arriving soon :-)
Is there another way to test if the image is good without trying it in a wii? that would be nice!

Well, you should make sure it is the correct number of bytes before burning...

I made a thread about this, and was told to post here.
I am looking for a dvd drive that:
is external for laptop use
can backup wii games
can burn wii games/dvds
can burn dual/double layer wii games/dvds
can backup dual/double layer wii games
Would it be possible to find a drive that can do all of this? The most important thing is that its external (usb?) and can burn sl and dl dvd/wii games.
A guy mentioned an external dvd enclosure; how do they work?

I'd prefer a notebook drive - alot smaller - but hey...
Noticed some GDR-8162B at a 'normal' price so had to order a few...
Thinks its the delay waiting for by tsg order, that's making 'impulse buy' ;-)
What firmware is your GDR-8082N then ?
Firmware 0L03, hope this helps

No, the gdr series can only read games. You can order a cable for around $13 that is usb to ide on ebay. No need to spend the $80 the losers on ebay are asking for a gdr drive with a dvd enclosure. If you do not already have a burner, you need to purchase one separately from the gdr-816*b drive used to read the wii games. Again, ebay is perhaps the best place to buy the burner as well. For full disclosure: I sell the gdr drives on ebay; fixed price, priority mail, $51. I cannot tell you who I am on ebay, but if you search for "gdr wii" it will come up on top :D

GDR 8082 - on sale on ebay for £15.00 or less, i bought one and it works fine with rawdump. should slot right into a labtop or you can buy an external enclosure. I really don't know why anyone is prepared to pay £50 for wii drives when they can be bought for £15 plus the cost of an enclosure (a box that your laptop drive slots into with a USB cable that allows you to plug it into a spare usb slot, effectively making the drive usb). These will read the wii discs, then most 'normal' writers will burn the iso images created with rawdump (so you will need 2 drivers a reader and a writer)
