It's the IDE to USB adapter that slows things down.

I've found that the official LG branded GDR-8164B drives (the ones with the LG logo on the drive's faceplate) produce a better backup copy with fewer errors than any other GDR drive.

http://www.cheeverind.com/parts/CRD-8162B.aspx

I dont think this is a typo, if you search for the GDR-8162B it is there also:
https://www.cheeverind.com/parts/GDR-8162B.aspx
There is a $11.60 difference in the price, as the "GDR"-8162B sells for 40.60, I'm not sure about shipping, it didnt say it was free, so it must be calculated upon checkout.
I have sent an email to the contact person at that website asking if he knows what the difference is between the two part numbers, I will post his response when I get it.
Ok, update about this:
I received an Email from Brendan Cheevers stating that the CRD was a typo, and thats all he said. So, I decided to search both GDR and CRD and see what the difference was besides the price, and I found that the CRD is $29 and it states the manufacturer is IBM. The GDR-8162 is $40.60 and states the Manufacturer is DELL. I went ahead and placed an order for the typo "CRD"8162 by IBM for $29 and found that ground shipping is FREE, so I will find out if this is a working unit for rawdump or not, if so, then thats a GREAT deal for $29 shipped, compared to the 50 + on ebay for these things.
I should have it in a few days, and will be able to test it and I will post my results then.
I Don't believe CRD was a typo since if you do a google search for CRD-8162b you find other sites selling this model manufactured by IBM. In anycase I would be very interested in hearing your experience with this drive.

What are the timings that you are getting? I didn't know 8082N could rip wii discs. How are you connecting 8082N via usb?

TIA

I have the same drive HP one 8163B i have flashed to different firmware , there is no speed improvement, it takes on my laptop with an external enclosure from my old HD 2.30 min.
I have bought a separate enclosure for 5.25" but does not work with that, does anyone have an GDR model drive in an enclosure working, any model will be of big help, regards Danny.

I have ordered and received a gdr 8162b dvd drive from cheeverind.com and prior to ordering i spoke to the dude at the website and he told me that was a typo the cdr 8162b and sent me the gdr 8162b for #29.00 including shipping and so far so good with the dvd drive. I'm a newbie at this wii stuff and only ripped 2 games so far, and both came out the right size 4.37gb & 4,699,979,776 bytes, but both took under 2 hours to rip, is that normal cause from reading peeps say it takes 2.30 hours per game. I don't have my wii modded yet so I cant tell if the copies will work but it should'nt be to long.

Don't know if this helps. I have a 8161 same firmware and my wii games take 1hr 30 mins to dump, GC 30-40min.. Never 5 hrs with the 8161. The 8082N laptop drive takes 4hr - 4hrs 30 min. Try cleaning the game and retry the dump.

I've got a HP GDR-8082N, that takes only 2hrs 30m via USB
so the time for the 8082N varies greatly depending on the firmware

Sounds like it... What firmware do you have for it??

I have an HL GDR 8082N0106 and it takes forever.. Would love to cut the time down on this one since I can carry it around with the laptop. I also have the 8161 and 8163. Mainly use the 8161 since it take only 1hr 30min dump a game.

for the 8082N 0C11
Very impressive...

You could try the 0C07 Firmware...
from http://tdb.rpc1.org/

The capabilities look identical....
Also I posted the dell 0120 firmware link...
You could try this.. ;-)

What's you current firmware....?

Noticed on ebay 'RAWDUMP'
a few GDR8082N's

I do think people are mad paying £90 for a 8164B

I picked up an old 8161B for £7 off ebay last week, then sold it for £30 + a day later.... firmware 0100, Dated 2002

Its getting to something when you can spot the drive without knowing the model no, etc...

Does anyone know if LG do a panasonic drive?
