Any drive will burn, but do it at a slow speed, with good media i.e. Verbatium

Just thought i'd let people know how i got on replacing the laser lens with SF-HD67, in this case it did work. I then had a GDR8162B working..... bought as a faulty drive....

Don't get me wrong here, the cost of the laser is about 6 quid and in some cases, it won't be the laser that's the issue. It could be another part... just wanted to let people know, it not that hard to do.

how on earth any gdr8082n's are quicker than than a gdr 8163b is beyond me!
They are rubbish drives anyway, they arent even made well,in my past experience, laptop drives should never be used for this purpose as they are not as robust as half height standard dvd drives.
Firmwares dont alter greatly on speeds.from retail to oem i.e hp dell etc.
As far as crossflashing drives go, (as long as you have no warranty) you will have no trouble going from an hp gdr 8162b to an lg gdr 8162b or even a dell gdr 8162b.
This rule applies to all the range i.e gdr 8161b,8162b,8163b and the 8164B.
How many people have got a proper firmware backup of a GDR H10N?this is the more modern dvd-rom drive from lg that 100% works backing up wii games(Only Firmware 0B10 Works Perfectly) in every occasion i have been up against,it works in standard ide mode native mode aswell!
I have several GDR H10N's but only 2 with the 0B10 firmware(the only firmware i have found and tested with every possible games i could!)
What we need is someone who can get a flasher to read the correct part of the GDR H10N's firmware.
I have done alot of tyesting and fiddling lately trying to get a way of backing up the firmware correctly,as the maximus toolbox in my opinion does not backup the correct part.
So all the people everywhere who have posted there backups of the GDR H10N 0B10 with this program, bin it its useless!
I have booted into dos with the latest LG Sata Flasher and it states this is not a .DLD file,so i just changed the file extension in windows to .DLD.
I retried flashing, then the flasher said this is not a .DLD file!
I then opened(in hex editor)a genuine .DLD from the GDR H20N deleted all indexes in there then cut and pasted the indexes out of my GDR H10N 0B10 firmware into the blank H20N .DLD saved it,then tried flashing that.
The flasher started alot better than previous even went through detecting my GDR H10N revision etc, then right at the start of flashing said yet again this is not a .DLD file!!!!
basically if you ope up all lg dvdrom genuine .DLD firmwares 8161b 8162b 8163b and the GDR H10N there file size is always 263kb and when opened in a hex editor the firmwares ALWAYS start with the name of the device the firmware is for!
When opening 0D04 0B10 0L01 firmwares from my own GDR H10N and other peoples using maximus toolbox 4.6(xbox firmware program)the firmware size is always 256kb different from lg's
Does anybody have any idea who to read, manipulate whatever firmwares so we can all get alot cheaper dvd-rom,s as these must be easier to get as i have a few All are 2007 march and 2007 may!
Just an idea.

The issue here is you carn't dump firmware
Unless the vendor has created a utility that lets you dump the firmware.

You need someone to issue one

With the GDRH10N, none has ever been issued

As long as your drive is an original LG GDR 8163B you will have no problems.
If your drive is an oem in other words it says GDR 8163B no LG witten before or most important written on the Front bezel, chances are its an oem and the lg update wont let you flash it any way!

I did not update my LG drive and I was able to rip SSBB. What error did you get when you tried via Friidump?

Hi brightspk,

I think I have a Toshiba version of the gdr-8082n, but how can I tell for sure? The label doesn't say Toshiba anywhere - but the only firmware I have been able to use was the "T011AUTO.EXE" from the Dangerous Bros firmware pack (which is intended for Toshiba drives).

If it is a Toshiba drive - what exactly does it mean to "get your soldering iron out"...? :-)

Thanks in advance!

What's the firmware on the bare drive? 10 ?

Sounds like if you've updated with DB firmware, it might be a toshiba

If you've flashed the drive, how ?
Is it currently in a laptop ?

Some Toshiba Laptop's have reversed cable select, so the firmware
differs or the caddy does the reversal...

I to have a toshiba 8082N, after removing the caddy, i had no issues.
Firmware was 0010... but it could have required a bit of soldering to solder one pin to cs pin to simulate cable select, did find a link but carn't see it now

Can you still dump after the db flash ?

I used the DB firmware update.

I bought the drive stand alone - and a caddy (somewhere else). The drive works perfectly, but doesn't recognize any wii disk inserted (it sort of freezes the system - unfreezes when the eject button is pressed).

I can't - but I couldn't do it before either. I tried using the IBM patch (to L03 that you recomended in a post), but the flashing process kept failing with a program error. After reading your thoughts on Toshiba I figured that could be the reason?

Is there some other way to flash the drive to one of the working firmwares?

Alot of these drive all have the same model on...

I suspect the IBM flash would work but you need to know the command line
options to force the flash

/C rings a bell, but find out before you do it and do it at your own risk, you might lose the drive.

search for flashup force flash

The IBM flash doesn't allow me to write anything? It's a "press 1 to flash your drive" sort of dialog?

Do you know if the Dell 0120 firmware would be able to backup wii media?

I'm willing to risk the drive - no problem. As it is it's kind of useless anyhow! :-)

It worked perfectly! I backed it up in just over 2 hours - and it plays in the Wii!

Yep, its me ;-)

Glad you got sorted...

Interesting how quick the drive is now...
i.e. flashing the tosh drive with the IBM firmware
You've got a fast 8082N if it took 2 hours

Best i've seen is a compaq 8082N, 2.5 hrs

I've also got the tosh drive, might flash it myself, just to see.

uou,

GDR81630F21 doesn't work
GDR81630F22 doesn't work

Hi all the 8161B's i have used have been a bit quicker or sim ilar speed to the 8162b 1hour 50 mins for splinter cell backup.
I think itys down to slight changes in hardware aswell as firmware.
Mind you i think i would prefer a PC drive anyday as they will last longer.
Glad to hear some people are having a bit of luck with these laptop drives.

Yes - it seems like Zelda was the fastest. I backed up "Harry Potter and the order..." and it took a little over 3 hours.

Don't know if I was lucky the first time or if Zelda had less scratches...? Anyways, 2 hours or 3 hours doesn't make a difference to me. As long as it works. :-)

Thanks again, brighspk!
