My Wii's FW was already 3.0, and I updated on SMG. I then updated the WiiKey to 1.9b and then 1.9g and it worked. I don't think the update order matters.

After increasing my collection of dvd coasters to 30+ and countless hours spent, I finally gave up. I took it back to the guy who modded my wii. According to him, the wiikey was "fried", not sure whether electrically or he just meant "stuffed". He replaced the wiikey and updated to 1.9g. Thank god for the lifetime warranty on wiikey I didn't have to fork out more money :D
Out of 8 backed up games I have, only 2 can play. Not sure why. I created a new backup disk for a different game and it worked. Hopefully other new backup disks will work too.
For those who are having this problem (see page 18 of this forum), sorry I have no solution for you guys. The wiikey being "fried" certainly explained why I couldn't get my wii to recognise any of my 1.9g disks. Hope you guys have better luck than me.
Thank you lawtyger, rafadawn, brido84 for your responses, greatly appreciated your help.

Can you say which chip it was?
I have a Wiican and was going to buy the retail version, but now I don't know.

Also, if I remove my chip (I mean, not me, I'll have it removed), original games will continue to work just fine?

You should Read more and/or Search a bit, this is quite often been posted about in this thread, but I'll give you the short answer, you can't play it.(Full Stop) an the long bit as well SMG is one of the games that will not work on other region consoles, Sorry.
For a list of these games check out,
http://wiki.gbatemp.net/index.php?title=...28USA.29_to_PAL
Using an out of region SMG you have instead of fixing your semi-bricked Wii have most likly re-semi-bricked you Wii and Will have to wait for a new update to fix this, All I Can suggest is that you get a NTSC-J (JAP) version of SMG and try and update from that to try and rectify your problem.
EDIT.
Reading your post again made me think you seem to know a bit but have got it wrong somewhere.
To avoid bricking or semi-bricking your Wii You always need to keep your console up to date, and if you update from disk's make sure there the same region as you Wii. (take a look at the Sticky "GUIDE -- HOW TO PROTECT FROM REGION BRICK")

brido84 is correct. You can not play a NTSC(U) version of SMG on your NTSC(J) Wii it isn't region compatible. You need to get the NTSC(J) version.
This has been explained time and time again. So next time read previous post and don't use the excuse that there are to many to read.
If members would have read the previous post from the beginning before posting their questions this thread wouldn't be half as long as it is now.

Could we somehow make the first post into an information sheet explaining a bit about what the problems have been with SMG, a method of installing the 1.9g patch and info such as that it is region locked and that might help stop some of these posts as well, as the first couple of pages are about the leaked copy.
Something like:
Super Mario Galaxy (SMG) contains a new type of copy protection, which can detect the Mod Chip and will produce this error "Error #001 unauthorized device has been detected". To play the game with the exception of D2CKey you will need to update your Mod chip firmware to the latest version downloadable from their respective web sites (WiiKey 1.9g, Cyclowiz 3.6, Ect).
SMG is not region compatible, this means you will only be able to play SMG from the same region as your Wii, even with the most up to date firmware or an authentic copy of the game it will only work if its the same region as your Wii.(To find the region of an .iso, Run brickblocker exe, load the .iso in question and click on the "read info" button. It will bring up the results just below the button. But don't brickblock it.)
SMG requires an update from the disk to be installed, this makes it incompatible with Wii Brickblocker.
SMG is very picky about the media it works with, If your have DRE's try using ImgBurn at x2 or x4 and quality media (I've used Verbatim DVD-R x16 burnt with ImgBurn x4 and it's working).
Wiikey update Method (No need to go to 1.9b first)
Originally posted by penbralat: If you're having update "issues" read below
Step 1: Run the update that SMG requires prior to installing the
1.9g fix.
Step 2: Run the 1.9g fix (burn this image w/ ImgBurn which is free).
Step 3: You will be prompt to run the update by either using a GC
controller (press A button) or by pressing reset (I was
using a GC controller for my update.
Step 4: You will see a % bar at the bottom. Once this update
completes you MUST run the second update!!! You will see a
WARNING to not turn off your console during the second
update. Once this is done you will receive a message to
insert SMG and to restart the system.
Step 5: ENJOY the game!!
You will need to run SMG and it will prompt you to run another system update, do it. After that your Wii will reset and you'll be able to play!
Originally posted by penbralat: Most people I see having issues w/ updates and/or fixes only run the first update thinking that the second one's the same thing; it's not.
* I did this on a US console w/ the NTSC (US) image.
** The 1.9g update is in .rar format. Extract the .rar file to a
specified directory. You will have 4 files: JAP, US, & PAL (I
believe). Burn the .ISO for your console's region and burn using
ImgBurn. That's it! I hope this helps.
Your WiiKey will need to be set to region free mode, this can be done with a config disk found at the WiiKey website prior to the Wii 3.x firmware, after this you will most likly need to download and burn,
http://rapidshare.com/files/48731676/config1.3.zip.html
Boot up with that disc. It'll ask for a Wiikey config disc, stick in the 1.3 disc, Turn on region free, save, reboot.
Should now be able to boot up 1.3 config disc straight.
WiiKey common Problems
Q: On the initial test once it reaches 100% it says error test failed! check your connections and try again.
A: 1)Poor connection between WiiKey and board, Test connections (multimeter), re solder possibly using long wire method.
A: 2)You may have a clone WiiKey or Something else, Worth having a look inside your Wii if you havn't already.
Q: Error #001 unauthorized device has been detected
A: your chip is not updated, if you have updated it has most likely failed try to update again and make sure you go through it twice, You may require the Recovery disk.
Q: Since I updated my WiiKey none of my backups are working
A: This is not nessicerily a SMG problem but a WiiKey one you may find help with this Here

1) Burn Wiinja Update 3 using CloneCD (this update contains previous updates within it)
2) Burn Wiinja Update 4 using CloneCD (unknown if this contains previous updates within it...yet)
3) Turn on Wii & insert Wiinja Update 3 DVD Disc
4) Go to DISC CHANNEL , insert the upgrade disc and wait for REBOOT to Wii Menu (if the pin3 is soldered to RESET) or for DISC NOT RECOGNIZED (if pin3 is not soldered to RESET)
5) Remove Disc and Restart
6) Insert Wiinja Update 4 DVD Disc when at main screen
7) Go to DISC CHANNEL , insert the upgrade disc and wait for REBOOT to Wii Menu (if the pin3 is soldered to RESET) or for DISC NOT RECOGNIZED (if pin3 is not soldered to RESET)
8) Remove Disc and Restart
9) Manually do an internet Update for Wii Console itself to 3.1u
10) Insert GAME* and do update it asks to do
11) Play GAME*
Key = *You know what game
I myself am going to wait to play this one when it comes out...call me paranoid but I would rather make a backup of my original and not take the chance of Nintendo possibly tracking who has played the game prior to release. Although I am currently at step 9 & all ready to go, well almost ready ;).
Cyclowiz Method
Anyone want to add any information too this post below and I'll add it and for the time being we can point people towards this.

If you get feedback from the others on problems and ways to fix (what you've started) I can edit and add this to the 1st post unless the original poster Syko360 objects.

Try updating to 1.9g again. You need to run through the update 2 times. The first time is a test you need to continue till you go through the update a second time.

I have searched and no one had given a secure answer of if an original NTSC-U SMG works on a modded NTSC-U wii (Wiinja without update). Im looking forward to buy this original copy and I don?t want to lose my cash.

EDIT!
Think this is probably wrong read post below for answer.
I think the copy protection will detect the chip an you'll get the error 001, but i'm not 100% with the Wiinja, I think that you'll need to update it, even to play an original.
If you try it you could find out, an if it doesn't work, you'll know you have to update/replace your chip, or not play any new games that come out, don't really have much to lose if you were going to buy it, but as I said don't think so.

Are you sure about this? I thought it would detect the mod chip?
I read previous threads that said the retail worked fine on modded Wii systems.
The new protection doesn't detect the Modchip it detects if the RAM has been modified.
Think about it if the new protection was in the firmware then no backup games would be able to play past or future. It has to be a new protection on the game disc itself.
Something like checking the RAM after the game has been started via the disc channel. If the RAM has been modified it will bring up the unauthorized device error.
If the RAM isn't modified it will start the game as normal. This being the reason why the retail version would work. Because the Modchip doesn't need to modify the RAM.
It would appear the new Modchip firmware updates have bypassed this new protection letting it boot without the unauthorized device error.
The only exception to this would be if you try playing a retail imported game disc of SMG (Game that is not the region your Wii is) which the Modchip would then kick in for region free capabilities. But NTSC(U) and NTSC(J) of SMG are not region compatible anyway.
Thats how I understand it all. if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me.
So you think that larrylje is wrong?

Not at all, I actually searched for something like that before posting trying to double check and saw this at the top of this page,
Originally posted by Yumeno: Originally posted by mrnemo: My SMG original disc did not work on my modded Wii, but it was an open source chip that cannot be updated. Apparently, this will not be a problem with those with chips that can be flashed. I will probably replaced it with a newer chip.

I have a Wiican and was going to buy the retail version, but now I don't know.
But as you can probably tell my post wasn't very definitive an larrylje knows what he's on about, so I'd go with what he said, but if you do you'll be testing it out so you could always post after you've tried, an tell us what happened.
Good on yer as well mate for not waiting to be spoon fed and going out looking for the answer.

Any particular reason for not updating your Wiikey to 1.9g. You might need to use a GCOS Config disc to turn ON the region ovverride setting for your Wiikey.
Check my thread here for links to the GCOS config discs. Use the one from the same region as your Wii.

Have you tried the recovery disk (on the disk channel and over it) and checked the solder points.

3. Inserted SMG released by PROMiNENT

Update: I ran the 1.9b Emergency Recover and re-upgraded to 1.9g Beta. All backups now work perfectly, including a Brickbreak version of SMG. =)
This is one of the few time I've heard of somone sort this out, the other time the person replaced their WiiKey, if you've tried all the other things (GCOS, Hacked disk ect) cant think of much else it could be, sorry.

The only error message I receive is when I click on disc channel and it say" Unable to read the disc check the manual" When I insert a copied games The wii spin for 2 seconds then stops. When I insert a Original games The wii spin for 4-5 seconds then shop the logo.

I don't know if I made the recovery disc right. I pad it the same way as I pad the 1.9b with command prompt and filechop.exe and burn slow 2.4x-4x with nero are imgburn on a dvd-r are dvd-rw. I use the RW because that's what I use to updated 1.9b. Does it sound like i'm doing right

I don't know if you pad it or not at this point you could just try both, I'm not sure about the DVD-RW I'd use DVD-R if you have it.
In any case you will not notice anything with the 1.9b Recovery Disc. All you do is go to disc channel then insert the 1.9b Recovery Disc and wait for 3 minutes then reset the Wii. This is a method I've heard works for using the recovery disk.
It might not be dead have you tried all, the connections with it being so recently modded, it makes me think that one of the connections might not have been right and initially was only slightly connected or was just resting in place, and the shaking of the drive quickly broke the join.
