Nero or IMGburn? - imgburn
Layerbreak or none? - whatever works for you - no fast rule.
Verbatim, Memorex, Sony or TDK? - whatever you can get to work... Based on what I've read I'd say Memorex then Verbatim but I haven't tried memorex myself. Verbatim worked fine for me, as did some cheap Aones.

I got another question. Is my Toshiba burner any good (TSST Corp CD/DVDW SH-182D)?

You'd be better off looking for reviews to decide that. Burners can be a factor but most half-decent ones will be fine if the media is ok.
Have you burned any SSBB backups and had no success? Are you trying to eliminate factors because of this?

Thanks. That calmed me a bit.

No, I asked just to eliminate factors. I don't even have my Wii modded yet. But I will mod it this summer.

This is the error I just got trying to burn it.
W 18:52:30 Failed to Write Sectors 2003968 - 2003999 - Reason: Write Error
That's from the log in ImgBurn. I left the sectors at auto. I used the wizard file.

Another brawl success story, after weeks of not being able to play subspace emissary!
Working (finally) burn was done on:
-Verbatim 8x DVD+DL disc
-Burned at 4x with imgburn, using layer break
-very early release (yay newsgroups!)
-error 001 patched
Previous NON-Working copies were burned on Fujifilm DVD+DL 2.4x discs (they are terrible, but all i could get my hands on at the time), I thought it may be my wii, so i adjusted my laser down to just under 500ohms... wishing i hadnt done that now, and i recommend that before you do anything like that, try some different media!
I have a USA Wii, fully updated, and a WiiKey with 1.9S update

So far I've been able to make SL SSBB to work on 2 types of media:
Sony+r
HP+r
Does anyone know what difference it makes if games such as SSBB are burned onto -r or +r??

After burning with every single program and method imaginable, I finally burned a working copy after updating firmware on my burner. Just a suggestion to people using slightly older burners.... upgrade firmware.

Wow, there are a lot of pages here.
I have a Japanese Wii. I`m not positive what modchip I have, cause I wasnt told when I bought the wii, but I assume it is a Wiikey. (Bought it shortly after Super Paper Mario came out, so probally it is the first version that got Super Paper Mario working.)
I have an official copy of the Japanese version of the game, and a burned copy I bought in Beijing. Both of them get the hardware error.
What are my options? Should I take it somewhere and ask them to update the wiikey?

Whatever modchip is in, updating is part of what you do generally as user maintenance. You don't take it to anybody to do it for you.
Wiikey stuff is here...

Ok...
Anyone else having this issue, or had this issue and resolved it?
Burnt two DVD's on my Verbatim 2.4x Sing. +DL discs and both read fine to load the game etc., but the single player adventure mode freezes most of the time when a cut scene is being played. (The Subspace Emissary)
the original disc reads fine after I put it in after it says "Disc cannot be read" and the cut scene continues.
Wii Key - 1.9s
Verbatim 2.4x discs, Singapore.
Burnt 1 disc at 2.4x in imgburn,(No Layer Break) the next at 1x (With layer break)
I ordered 8x Verbatim discs due to recommendations by others. Would this possibly be the reason why it's not loading? Anyone else experiencing this issue?

As long as the copy of brawl you have is US as well, then you are fine to install the update
The other option is to update your Wiikey to 1.9s and play using your original

I have an Argon 1.8 and after three tries, it finally works. The first burn was used with Nero 7. The second with ImgBurn without layer break. The third burn was also done with ImgBurn but with layer break this time at 2084960. I used Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2.4x speed. It works, but parts of the movie seem to be slow and sound is distorted, but game play is great. I have spent all day reading these posts and finally got it to work. The white screens that I've got on the first two burns was because of no layer breaks. This is probably the main reason why we see a white screen after creating a save file. Try it again with layer break at 2084960 with ImgBurn. Thanks to all for the information.

The modchip I have is an Argon with 1.8 firmware from Infectus. Wii is updated to 3.2U. The first two attempts show a white screen and the wii locks up. On the third burn using ImgBurn 2.4 using Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2.4x speed. The difference between the first two burns and the last is that the last was with the layer break option. Go to Tools->click on Settings->Write tab->click on User Specified and type in 2084960 on the options part. Click ok and click on mode and write at 2.4x or whatever speed you feel comfortable with. I notice all the others with the Wiikey did not have to do a layer break. The first two burns I did were unsuccessful with Nero and ImgBurn without the layer break option. All I saw was just a white screen after creating a save file. It just locked up afterwards. I tried burning again and this time with the layer break option. Worked perfectly except my copy seems to have some sound distortions during the intro and parts of video clips. Other than that, it works fine. Just layer break at 2084960 and it should solve the white screen cd not running part. I think media is very important, my burner spills out half written dvds such as Memorex, TDK, and other cheap brand. I've tried three Verbatim DVD+R DL and they all burned perfectly except for the first two, they don't load but burn successfully. All and all, you just need to do a layer break and hopefully this will work for you as it did for me.

Also forgot to say that the version of super smash bros brawl is not the wizard version. It just says Super Smash Bros Brawl NTSC Confirmed working from Minova?? Monova?? I forgot, but it's from one of those sites if I spelled it correctly. Hope I have been useful to others besides who have an Argon with 1.8 firmware. About the Wasabi, I think it was released from team Infectus. If so, just try to do the layer break option like I did. Good luck.

well, ive tried my third attempt, and after the loading screen it goes to white screen, and then the green writing saying the disc cannot be read. i have tried the layer break option on the last two and no luck. have tried burning at 2.4x and 4x with some no name GQ dvd +r dl. could it be the dvd's? because it reads it and recognizes the game, but freezes up. should i try a slower or faster burn speed? i dont want to waste anymore disks. thanks again guys and gals for all the help. i hope to be playing this soon.

GQ from Fry's Electronics? That's probably the worst media to use. I had many problems burning movies with GQ. Try better media such as Memorex like all those who had success with it. If you have a little bit more money, go buy Maxell or Verbatim. Worst case scenario, if you messed up all those, just go back and try to return them. They are returnable if you say your computer does not recognize them. That is all I could say. If you have Wiikey, just go back and read carefully the others comments. If you have Argon and followed the steps I have explained, it should work.

It should work if you use better media. At least, that's what I assume. Don't give up. You will eventually get a good burn and be able to play. Just experiment around with other media. Try to avoid those ones that are always on sale, they are great for single layer, but not for DL.
