Thanks.
I'd have thought 60Hz was right cos I'm on PAL and I can get it to run in either but 60 is best even though it doesn't suit the TV I use for all the other games I have. But in any case - why didn't you just try 50Hz and see? - that would answer your 1st question.

My friends wii can play it no problem, mine cannot and i have done 4 copies and the most sucess is the title screen follwed by a white screen. I have read forums on cleaning the lens etc it this the only difference between the 2 consoles?

It's still possible your Wii will read a backup made somehow on some brand of disk but obviously it's gruelling and the disks can be costly if you burn enough. The tolerance your Wii for DL has is obvious not the same as your friend's though and if you can get an original SSBB to test with then you'll at least be able to know if it's a problem that needs fixing. Outside of cleaning some have reported success with an adjustment detailed here

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/108/618029#3882539

If you decide to investigate that or try and use a DVD lens cleaner (which has also been reported to work for some) then please be careful and remember you do so at your own risk.

Recently, I bought a pirated SSBB, probably burnt with Verbatim, but its painted cover. It seems like my NTSC U Wii w/ Argon can read it on disc channel, but after the Now Loading black screen it will not be able to read. This is basically a new Wii that I have bought. Any ideas? Im planning to exchange it at the store for another one to try.

My Mario Kart Wii has also not been working, being able to detect, but not getting into the game.

Would it be my Argon chip? Any updates?

Are you kidding? - what makes you think cos you bought a pirated backup of SSBB it should work no probs like an original? You are stuck with all the same issues that ppl who burnt their own none working copy of it have. You've only got recourse to exchange if the Wii doesn't play the proper original. Seeing as you have an Argon in there, I'm assuming you have it clipped in but if you're think taking it out and asking for a console swap will solve your issue then you might be lucky - but what will you do if it doesn't? SSBB backup can be a real pain to get going and I doubt very much that swapping your console will solve it.

Quite possibly - go have a look and maybe get used to the fact that stuff ain't always gonna run until you have a proven method for successfully burning your own backups - including MK which is detailed in the MK sticky.

Could someone please help,
I have a ntsc-u wii premodded with a d2ckey that I have just updated with my original brawl disc, however, I have just downloaded a ntsc-u brawl disc (which size is 7.92gb) and burned it to a verbatim DVD+R Dl disc and my wii will not read it, my other backup games work fine with few minor exception. So does anyone know what I could do? Its very irksome that this is the only game that I cannot play as a backup.

FIXED AND NOW WORKING:

Previously, I was having getting the "Error #001: Unauthorized Device Detected" black screen. SSBB loads on the channel screen and allows me to press Start. I receive the error after the disc drive fires up.

I acquired a ppf patch online that is being used to make SSBB NTSC backups run on PAL systems. Here is a description of what the ppf patch does from the NFO file included with it:

This PPF patch will modify the WiiZARD's iso file so the game can be played on PAL Wii systems. We removed the english updates so it doesn't apply the updates and you won't get duplicate channels. The region of the wii game is also patched. The modchip doesn't have to change the region on the fly anymore. This patch is confirmed working on the Wiikey 1.9g firmware in combination with 3.2E. The game runs on 60Hz and without any framedrops. It's signed with the Trucha Signer.

Of course, as noted below, I have an NTSC launch day system. I simply patched the iso file with this ppf, then used RegionFrii to change the iso back to NTSC/USA (since the patch will change the region to PAL.) My disc loaded magically with no issues, and I do not have duplicate channels on my Wii menu.

For those interested in trying this method, here is a link to the ppf file:

Just tested out the file:

Super Smash Bros Brawl USA DVD5

if youre like me then you want to know what DVD5 is:

DVD5 is basically saying you can burn this game like any other dvd iso because it is made for single layer dvds (like most wii games) instead of the 7+gb version of brawl.

I used RiDATA dvds at 4x speed and it works fine and yes I did run the update that came with the disc.

I have a wiikey version 1.9g (not 1.9s, but G)

Just wondering, I've seen some posts about setting the tv to 50hz, do all non-hd tvs have to do this? Does it make the picture better?
Thanks

For those with Argon:

I got this info from the site where I had my wii modded:

Getting SSBB copy to work with Argon Fw 1.8 and up

- Before burning, look at the disc information in IMGBurn and check the supported write speeds. If 2x isn't there (usually is 2.4x or 4x) change it to one that is.
- You should use a specified layer break when burning (don't know why but it works). Start up IMGBurn and go to Tools->Settings. Then go to the 'Write' tab, find 'Layer Break' on the right hand side, click on 'User Specified' and enter 2084960. Click OK and go burn your iso once more.

***All in all, update your firmware first and test it again. If it doesn't work, delete the save that the game made on your Wii and try it again. If still no success, re-burn the Wiizard backup (I used the same backup) at a supported speed with the specified layer break, and see if it works then. If it still doesn't work, it might be (but I doubt it) your media quality, so if you have any spare change buy a better quality DL disc. ***

So copy the iso from the disk if you don't have it stored on you computer. Img Burn>Iso Read> file size should be 8,511,160,320 for the DL (Dvd 9) iso. Then iso write and set the layer break, and burn with good media at 2.4x, 4x on DVD 5.

I agree with Cecy. I also have an Argon 1.8 and burned with the layer break option at 2084960 and it worked. I previously burned without layer break and it didn't work. I have the version that is not the Wizard one and it still works fine. I also have the Wizard version and they're both the same to me. In all, it deepens on the media you use.

I can't seem to burn the dvd9 english SSBB. I've already wasted 2 dl dvd and don't want to waste anymore. Heres the deal, I'm burning with my gf toshiba laptop, I burned dvd5 games on her laptop before and it worked just fine. I also have the latest firmware. I'm pretty sure her laptop is capable of writing dl dvd's, but I also checked the imgburn device info and it said that the laptop is able to burn dl dvd.

So for the past to tries, heres what happened. The first time I used imgburn, didn't set a layerbreak, and used memorax 2.4x burnt at 1x speed. It went for a while but got a error later. Below is the log.

The second time I used nero 8 with verbatim (made in singapore) 8x speed burnt at 2.4x speed, again no layer break. That only went about 30min before getting an error. My gf closed out of the program so I can't get the log or the error message.

Im stumped! This is my first time burning a dl dvd game and I don't know whats wrong. Help is appreciated.

This thread is full of ppl who've burnt way more than 2 disks trying to get the game to work - some have burnt as many as 20. It doesn't matter that your drive supposedly has DL burning capability. It's just very difficult for many to burn this game and the burner itself is a factor. It's well known that you can't just burn DVD 5 games on any media with any burner using any program. The situation with DVD 9 is very much more difficult.

I tried to burn SSBB on a Philips DL 2.4x DVD using Nero 8 as the burning software. The burning process was fine until 51% where it seems that it cannot read the disc and finally it returned a burn error stating "Could not perform end of Disc-at-Once" and another frizby I've got.

Why is this like this? Do you always need to perform layer break with imgburn? Can't the automatic layer break of Nero and ImgBurn work for all DL ISO's?

TIA for your replies.

Not sure if there is any rip software which can rip the original SSBB so we can create our own DVD-5 version iso of it? If anyone know any software can do that, please share. Much appreciate.

How do you think the DVD9 backup is done? Also there is DVD5 with cuts out there as well.

Just letting you know what's possible and this whole thread has details of backing up - you might wanna browse thru.

I'd use imgburn for this - generally results are not consistent and depend on various factors including media and burner. Layer break manually set is an option to try if auto doesn't work. Fixes for some and not for others. Trial and error. Also this is currently the only DL game for the Wii so there's no point in trying to talk about "all dl ISO's" cos others don't exist.

alright. if for example you use the "test" burn in imgburn and all went through perfectly. does that mean that when you "actually" burn it, it will be 100% successful?

I need help guys. I have a NTSC wii with a wiikey.

I burned ssb on Ridata at 2.4x DL DVD on imgburn. I entereed the layer break. The burn was successful.

I first updated the firmware to the latest version then I updated my wii to 1.9s.

When I pop in SSB, it did another update from the disk. Then it loads up to the splash screen then it gives me a disk error problem and tells me to reboot.

Tried this about 3 times already.

*Note: I did not turn off my wii at 12-15% during the disk update. Is that a problem?

Any ideas? I apologize in advance if the answer was already posted.

Try burn without a layer break, it works in my friend's wiikey wii. I didn't do the 12-15%. everything works fine. Also, try use Verbatim +R

No - it means it should be able to burn the disk in theory and generally it will burn no problem. Also it definitely DOES NOT mean the disk will play in the Wii even if the burn is successful.

You could also look at what I tried (one page back.) I was getting a disc error #001. Not sure if that's the same one you are getting. I ran the update from the disc and did not use the layer break.

Keep in mind, all of the aspects of my experiment (console, firmware, dvd media and pc dvd burner) were all the same, and my first Verbatim disc got the error before I patched it.

From all of the reading I have done on the net the past few days, it appears to me that the Error #001 is a check from the disc to the system and the check can be removed by patching the disc. Instead of manually extracting partitions, changing hex values, signing the files and reinserting the partition, the ppf file does all of that for you and in a matter of seconds. I wish I could thank whoever took the time to make it!
