Update the firmware to 1.02 - link

The Philips you are using are made by CMC - I won't trust them :)

If the firmware update doesn't do it switch to Verbatims.

How do I update the firmware? When I read the instructions before on a different file it said I had to make sure no other drive was connected to the same cable.. set it to master etc. Do I really have to do all that? I would rather not have to unhook my pc if I dont really have to..

Also the link to the firmware you gave is for GSA-H55N Nero says mine's GSA-H50L. Still ok?

I know Verbatims are better, I'll have to try if this doesnt work. I thought I'd get Phillips since it was on sale for a really good deal. I guess thats why eh.

@natcot > If that reply is for me.. I have never had problems with my drive before. First time I've ever burned a DL dvd tho. The drive is only a couple months old and the cable is brand spanking new (just got a new pc) Windows has never had a problem recognizing it.

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry I posted the wrong one from that site - link

You should be fine flashing it - plus your log shows only one drive and it's more than likely already on the master.

If it came with the pc you can also check the pc manufacturers site to see if they have any newer firmware listed - this one is from 2007 but there probably isn't anything newer.

Updated the firmware ok. Burned at 2x instead of 4x and it burned successfully!

But....... The wii does not read the disc at all. Logo won't even come up or anything.

I have a nice high quality plextor drive in my desktop which can do dvd-dl burns. However, I run ubuntu on my desktop. Any suggestions on how to burn? I'm using a wasabi chip on a d2b chipset so I'm not assuming too many problems and I shouldn't need the layer-break.

Well your half way there:)
I would switch media - it's probably a compatibility issue. Members in this thread have had success with Memorex (one brand I usually do not recommend) and Verbatim.
I'd go with the Verbs cause Memorex also uses CMC as a manufacturer. So you never know what you'll get with Memorex.

It's probably your media TheDraGun
Verbatims or Tayo Yoden's are your best bet. Amazon has them for pretty cheap or your can get them at a local walmart.

The Verbs you bought are single layer - Size: 4,700,372,992 bytes + Disc ID: MCC-004-00 (single layer mid code) & Book Type: DVD+R .

You can use any program to burn like Nero.

Nope, they are definately Dual Layer. Unless they are labeled wrong. The Package and right on the disc says its DL. ImgBurn might be seeing them wrong? Anything else I can use to test the disc.

Wow this better be a good game for all the trouble I have to go through..

EDIT:

I tried the Phillips discs I used before and it said the same thing. I reset the computer a couple times and then it finally showed the dvd was not full. Now if I try to burn the Verbatim at 2x it says:

Failed to Reserve Track!
Reason: Unable to recover TOC
Grr. My burner sucks!

Imgburn is just displaying how the drive is reading/identifying the discs.
You can try DVD Identifier (free) and see what it says.

Everything from the Imgburn info though does show them as being 16x +R Verbs. The media id code from Verb dual begins with MKM.

Where'd you get them? I'd consider returning them.

Here's some info on the TOC error - it's error # **035700 - link

Finnally just got it working. Burned and verified the disk :)
Game works in the wii!

Just a general question about the game.. Using the wiiremote it has to be used sideways? even in the menu It won't let me just point and click A. I thought it was broken at first until I realized I had to use the directional and the 2 button. Is that how it's supposed to be?

Thanks for the help.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I found a website with the controls.

If anyone else needs help with the controls here they are...

Hey all,

I have a problem, and couldn't find the answer in one of the existing topics. Sorry if this already has been posted:

I have a new PAL Wii + D2CKey
Firmware 3.2E
Freeloader
Playing on 60Hz

I'm trying to get my US Brawl (Wiizard) copy to work, and it works until the "use your strap" screen. After this I get a white screen. I have tried everything I can, but it just wouldn't get past this point.

Please help! Thanks in advance!

I allready posted this in the main forum but didn't no this thread was here so

I was playing SSBB on a dvd DL (the Pal converted Wiizard version) And it was playing fine. I have a 3.2E wii and 1.9s flashed wiikey. I turned of the wii and came back later to try to play ssbb and it worked but REAAALLLY SLOOWW. I turned of the wii and put ssbb back in and tried again and it registered. I clicked start and got the black screen error "turn of wii and consult the manual" stuff. I turned off the wii and turned it back on and now it won't read any backups. Originals work just fine but no backups work they just spin in the drive for 5 secs and then stop. PRetty much anything thats burnt just won't work. I never had any issues with the wiikey and it had been running smoothly until now. I opened up the wii and tested the connections and they seem to be fine
has anyone else had this problem. Any help greatly appreciated

BTW i've used different media and that doesn't help. Srry if this issue has allready come up but i tried looking through the 125 pages and couldn't really find anything

Wait, Wut

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents on what I did to run a backup of SSBB.

This is what I have/use:

"1st generation" Wii US/NTSC
WiiKey
Sony DVD recorder
Taiyo Yuden 8x -R
Verbatim +R DL
ImgBurn (2.4.1)
FriiDump (v .3 and .4)

What I did to create a backup
1) using Friidump .3, initiated a backup ISO of SSBB, which bomed after it ripped 1/2. Process took 3.5 hours
2) using Friidump .4 (supports DL), and RESUMED rip using same command [friidump -d d: -a]. Process took about 3.5 hrs (so total is 7 hours - luckily, I was able to resume the .3 rip!)
3) Burned ISO on Verbatim +R DL (no layer break)

What I did to upgrade WiiKey
1) From 1st page of this thread, downloaded and burned Wiikey 1.9S padded US version on TY -R (also got padded versions of Wiikey 1.4 config and 1.9b for recovery, but didn't use either of them)
2) Inserted 1.9s into Wii and turned it on
3) Initiated process (test and upgrade) Upon completion of test, 1.9 showed me a "test successful and instructed me to press the "reset" button, which I did.
4) Initiated upgrade process. Upon completion of upgrade, 1.9s showed me a "upgrade successful and instructed me to press the "reset" button which I did.

What I did to upgrade the Wii (AFTER Wiikey upgraded to 1.9s)
1) Tested older backup games - worked fine
2) Inserted original SSBB (prior to WiiKey upgrade, SSBB original was not recognized) and allowed it to upgrade the Wii firmware (which put it at 3.1US)
3) Tested older backup games (again) - worked fine

The backup (after Wiikey upgrade to 1.9s AND Wii upgrade to 3.1U)
1) Inserted backup of SSBB (no layer break)
2) It ran fine (so far)
3) Asked to create a save game file - which I did NOT
4) continued to run until the screen where it scanned past a row of characters, then "bombed" with a message "Can't read disk, read your manual"
5) pressed eject, removed disk, and put it aside
6) Burned SSBB ISO again but this time using layer break at 2084960.
7) Tested SSBR (layer break) and it ran fine (so far)
8) Asked to create a save game file - which I DID this time
9) Continued to run until I got to the same place where it bombed previously and got the same bombed message
10) Pressed eject, pushed it back in, clicked various Wii remote buttons and then .... the game continued and I was able to get to the next screen to select type of game, BUT I had to use the keypad to move around (no "floating finger pointer")
11) After this, subsequent testing worked fine. Never saw the "can't read disk" message and the floating finger pointer came back
12) Went back and tested SSBR (non-layer break) and now that one is also working fine, no problems.

Perhaps the "save game file" helped or I just needed to continue to click on the wii remote buttons or I needed to eject and reinsert the backup or some combination of the 3 in order to get it to work. But the bottom line is my backup SSBB (both layer break and no layer break versionS) work.

Thanks to all on this thread who shared their problems and solutions.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Hey, Im sort of new to this, but ive read alot of threads about burning SSBB but im not having any luck so ill just explain every step i took hoping that someone will help.

I download Brawl from a torrent site called *removed* and it was compressed and the extracted version is 7.92 GB. I then tried burning it many times using Imgburn version 2.4.1.0. The first time, i did it at 2.4x and there was an error. The second time, i did it at 2x, but at about 20-40%, it got stuck and it stopped burning. The third time, i got really tired of it and i decided to use NTI CD & DVD maker at 2.4x (2x) and it burned comepletely, but on my Wii, The game did not start and the disc channel didnt change. Im sortof really desperate as this is actually a huge waste of Dual-Layered Discs. Please, someone, help me.

BTW: I'm using Verbratim DVD+R DL's with no luck.
