Well, I, a newbie, just read that whole thread from pg 1-7 and gotta say, props to Ender88. You obviously know your stuff.

Im a big gaming fan, but really arent that big into PS2 (time constraints, life etc..) I have basic software, and knowledge of modding (modded my PS1 a LONG time ago). This FAQ and msg board in general have helped a lot so I just wanted to say thanks.

The only DVD burder I currently have access to is in a Macintosh Laptop (a sweet one at that). Is there any known software/methods for duplicating ps2 games (or DVDs in general) on the Macintosh platform? If there was a Mac version of DVD Decrypter that would seem to be ideal, but is there?

EDIT - just found the MAC Ripping forum...So much to learn

alright i just got the hd loader and 40 gig maxtor hard drive so it worked for like a wek and then after my brother hit it it will no longer recognize the hdd do you think one little hit destroyed a hard drive the network adaptor can still get online so i dont know whats wrong it just keeps making a clicking noise????

He either destroyed it or he knocked the HDD loose. Take it out and make sure its still firmly pulgged into the network adapter. If you dont mod it to be thicker (ie wrapping and tapeing paper to it) it will have some room to move and eventually come loose. If it's broken, I'm not suprised. HDDs are very sensative and can break easily. It will probably have a warrenty, so if it's broken, try that.

alright i did check the hdd last night and it was tight i even reinstalled it and still the same clicking noise i need to see if my hdd is busted (after one tiny hit though) where can i check to see whats going on with this hard drive >>>>>>>>>>> another peice to add to the puzzle my PS2 has been known to be crap (ie dvds clicking, stopping in middle of games / dvds) so do you think this too might add to the problem even though i had the hd loader working about a week ago perfectly fine

Where can I find out more about loading games onto and off of a hard drive? I read the ps2info write up on them, and I couldn't find out where to get the HDA software. http://www.ps2nfo.com/hddfaq.html has a nice write up but it doesn't say explicitly what the HDA method will allow you to do. i.e. do you still need a mod chip to play backups from the hard drive? Or if I get the HDA setup will that be sufficient to play backups? How do you get the games from the PS2 onto the hard drive of the HDA?

Sorry if this is post hi-jacking, but you seem to be the resident expert so this thread has covered a lot of great stuff for newbies.

if the ps2 acts funny when running from a game disc, then its your laser. HDDs are fragile, it very well could have been destroyed. Does it got to the screen where it says it didn't detect a HDD?

Once you have HDA it will be very obvious as to how to use it. If you download HDA (memory card version) then no you will not need a modchip to boot it, you will also need to download the DMS3 format disc). If you download a standalone CD/DVD version, then you will need a modchip. If you buy it, then that's all you need. With all of what I have just said, you can put original games on the HDD no problem, but to put on backup, you will need a modchip regardless of wheter you needed one to boot up HDA. When I say modchip I really mean any boot method, i just use modchip as a convinient noun. So it first depends on how you want to get/use HDA, memory card, backup, or original. That might not have been the easiest thing to understand so tell me if you need me to elaborate.

you could reforamt it and see if it works with your computer. I'd say it's broken, the possibility of it being something else is far-fetched.

So "HDA" is a piece of software that goes onto the PS2's Hard Drive right? If so what function does it serve?

There's a version that goes onto the memory card instead? (and DMS3 CD is needed)

"If you download a standalone CD/DVD version" -Do you mean of HDA or the DMS3?

And you're saying the console knows whether the game stored on it's drive came from an original CD/DVD or from a copied one?

What's involved in loading a game when you have, say a slide/card swap magic 'mod-process' (from HDD) and this DMS3 CD? Is it like 4 steps?

Im just getting into this and so I appreciate your explaining it all.

the memory card version needs the DMS3 CD to format the HDD because the memory card version has been stripped of its ability to do it (thus it can fit on a memory card) if you burn a copy of the retail HDA then it will be able to without the DMS3 CD. Any originals can be put on the HDD without any modchip, backup copies will require some form of a modchip. HDA is not stored on the HDD, its a program that you boot up (like anyother game, or through the memory card which is triggered by a PSOne game that you set up) and is able to read the games you store through it on the HDD.

To be more specific I will address each question individualy.

So "HDA" is a piece of software that goes onto the PS2's Hard Drive right? If so what function does it serve?

It is software, but it never gets put on the PS2. Like any other game it is run from a CD or DVD (or botted with a PSOne game and the memory card). It fucntions as a way to play PS2 games (some aren't compatible) on your PS2 without having to swap games, wait through long load times (much shorter times) and it reduces ware on the laser (the laser isnt being used during gameplay).

There's a version that goes onto the memory card instead? (and DMS3 CD is needed)

Yes, theres a version that lets you setup a PSOne game to trigger a program on the memory card which is a stripped version of HDL (the original HDLoader). Since its stripped you will need a program made by the modchip company DMS that will reformat the HDD. It's free.

"If you download a standalone CD/DVD version" -Do you mean of HDA or the DMS3?

By this I mean a copy of HDA. To boot up a copy you will need a modchip. If you have the original then you dno't need a modchip.

And you're saying the console knows whether the game stored on it's drive came from an original CD/DVD or from a copied one?

No it doesn't. HDA will not let you put a backup onto the HDD unless you have a modchip. Once the game is on the HDD, it's on, at that point only you can tell by memory which games were from backup or original. Not that it matters.

What's involved in loading a game when you have, say a slide/card swap magic 'mod-process' (from HDD) and this DMS3 CD? Is it like 4 steps?

It depends on what boot method you ahave. In the beginning of my FAQs page I have a brief description of each (most methods). You will use the method too put any backups on teh HDD and to boot HDA if you are using a copied version.

I hope that helps.

The bay was made for a Sony PS2 HDD which comes with this metal framearound it, so to keep your HDD snug in the HDD bay so that it doesnt slowly wiggle off the adapter you ahve to wrap paper around it. I just grabbed a stack of printer paper maybe 15 pieces thick (you can experiment to get the perfect thickness) and i cut it to make it thinner and be the right width as to not go over the ends (i made it about 1/8 inch from the edge on both sides). I then wrapped it around and tapped it snug. I slid it into the bay to see if it could use more or less paper. Get it so that it will slid in without gtting caught on anything (make sure you tape the paper down snug) and also doesnt have room to go up down left or right. when you ahve enough paper for that, its time to add a buffer to the end that goes in first. I ended up using a 1/4 inch buffer of paper (add more paper until it wont go in enough to screw on the network adapter, then take off enough to get it to go in enough). Put it all together and you have a modded HDD ;) hey...it gets the job done. And plus you wont hear the HDD clunking around if you rock your PS2 side to side.
