Prisoner & ScubaPete: As you know, I've only been carrying-on (blowing smoke into the wind), but if member bunj was banned, I assure you he richly deserved it. No one gets idly banned or without a lot of pre-thought.
Thanks for the ifo, Sophocles on what bunj was trying to do.
Yes, a lot of folks will do anything they can to make a fast buck - and don't care who they injure/harass in the process. All I have to do is look at the scads on junk spam-mail I get everyday to see that.
You guys seems like a cool bunch though !!

Hi guys, The newbie post problem has come up on several threads as I'm sure you are all aware of. On one of the them about newbies starting new threads I suggested a message or splash screen be added saying something like:
HAVE YOU TRIED THE FORUM SEARCH FEATURE FOR AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION?
This could show up whenever start a new thread is clicked on. This way the newbies would at least see that there is a search feature on here. I guess my suggestion never went anywhere. It was worth a shot.

Or you could force a search screen before allowed to create a new thread. So a search count of atleast one one needs to be registered before they could post.

Hmmm...a mandatory search count of one would be a good idea.

In the end, it is the beer which really counts -
The beer and perhaps leaving A/D well enough alone -
I do like the idea of a splash screen though - One that is in place for say, 15 seconds and, displays our forum rules. At least then they will be forced to read them and the chances are, will violate them a little less often -
One can often hope :)
Pete

Quote: But in the end, the system may just need to be left well enough alone. The cure may be worse than the problem. Now where did those beer cans go? :o)
Wonder where those memorable words came from. I guess we can agree on something there Pete.

This Bud's on me. Hey there Scubapete, Sophocles. I'm no Scubabear, but may be the bear in question. I'll just toss it in the tank, I'm not one of those swimming polar bears. Haven't been here since August.

An example falls in our laps. A newbie padding his post count with worthless posts. Any merit and it would have to go to advertising.

Hey, hey Brobear,
Quote: A newbie padding his post count with worthless posts.
Speaking of which, if you want to see some padding, you should checkout the "Testing" thread ?
There's some who are doing sooo much testing there they'll make Senior in no time and they're not just Newbies -

Ya I have been watching that too. The tests are really just to test post count I think. Odd with new rules, I think we will see more test threads.
I always thought it was about helping people. I guess I am just dumb.

I've seen the test thread. Used to be, there was only one and only a few people got carried away. I don't think the mods needed to pad their counts. It was an out of the way thread to test signature setups with gifs and such. However, now they close them and new ones crop up. Post counts really mean nothing anymore. I say just let everyone play and be happy as long as they don't go around trying to start arguments like some of the new members. Seems some newbies think it is sport to indulge in being a nuisance. I no longer make any comments that may seem to be political or refer to member level. dRD said he would personally get rid of anyone doing so. ;)

Ok, I understand, pretend it isn't happening -
Works for me -
By the same token, you better that Newbie behavior isn't happening either - I do that ! LISTEN UP - I got the word, everything is beautiful, in it's own way -

Time will answer the question as to whether or not the changes in the rules are of benefit to the forum. We can conjecture about what the possible long-term effects these changes are going to have, but in a few short months we'll begin to see its results.

Sophocles, Your name fits your wise statemant. Only time will show the long term results to the forum. However I already see some negative changes along with the useless posts. Members I looked up to for answers as a Newbie very seldom post anymore. Others I remember never post. I'm sure some have moved on to other tasks. I use to make about 15 to 25 posts per night at one time trying to answer honest questions. Now I post maybe 5 a night and some of those are to say hello to friends I have made on here. It just doesn't seem to be the same as when I joined. It will be a year next month. I just don't know what the answer is. With the amount of members this forum has, it's surprising Drd and company are not all wearing those white jackets with the arms that tie behind your back. Anyway I was just reading through and thought I'd add to the comments by you, Pete and Brobear. Later Guys.

Yes it seems there are also some short-term effects to consider. I've noticed that many of the older members have slowed there repsonse frequency rate considerably and some have virtually left the forum altogether.
Hmm! Beer!

I'm sorry I was late answering your query,
The quote was from this thread, the opening post by dRD.
Cheers,

Hey Sophocles, brobear,
I've got a cold keg of Guinness (sp) sitting in our lounge area, over by the cooler, under the potted palm - Come on over and help yourself to a frosted mug - :D)
