You said its a PSP Phat 1000, so it will not have the new mobo.
It will be fine.

See this link, if you don't have one of those mobo, then yes it will work.

Followed the instructions and am now at 3.71 M33-2 with no problems.
However I seem to be having problems upgrading to anything higher.
When I run the MUX 2.0 app, I get the menu screen with all the updates. I choose 5.00 M33 (or 4.01 M33) at which point the LED starts flashing but then nothing else happens. The LED carries on flashing and I've left it going for 15 mins but in the end I've given up and power reset the PSP. When I then go into the Game menu on the memory stick there is a corrupted data file of 4kb with the right creation time and date for when I started the Mux 2.0.
I presume that it shouldn't take longer than 15 mins? What should I try next? The card is the same one that successfully installed the 3.71 CFW so it should be OK shouldn't it?
I suppose I could format it and try again but it's the only stick I have and I did want to leave it as a Magic Memory Stick just in case I had to unbrick the PSP for whatever reason.
Any ideas much appreciated.
OK, I totally re-did the Magic Memory Stick and tried again. Mux 2.0 took ages once again but I left it a bit longer and it finally finished after about fifteen minutes once again. I was then able to update to 5.0 M33. Did Mux again to go to 5.0 M33-3 and it only took about 30 secs (only a small update I presume.
If this is normal, it might be an idea to say in the guide that it can take this long for Mux to do it's stuff - might save other people thinking it's not working because it's taking so long.
While I'm on, I also thought I'd dare to suggest a slight bit of elaboration to the main guide at the only place I wasn't 100% sure I was doing things right.
The bit where you have to answer 'y' to format, before you take the memory stick out, disable usb, put it back in and re-enable USB, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wait for it to format or to take the stick out straight away. In the end I took the stick out after a couple of minutes as nothing seemed to be happening and all was fine, so I thought maybe saying you can take it out straight away after saying 'y' might just get rid of any confusion.
Like I said though, excellent and very comprehensive guide - gave me the confidence to finally take the plunge into custom firmware and for that I'm very grateful.

1) I had update to my FAT psp from CFW 4.01 M33 to CFW 5.00 M33 --> 5.00 M33-3 + 1.50 ADD ON. After update, my PSP had text entry problem - For Nickname editing and Web address text entry. When enter edit mode for test entry, the page just flickering as if some button had been stucked (I suspect to be the SELECT button).
I use the Pandora + MMS, enter service mode amd select [X] and re-load my PSP to CFW 3.71 M33-2. everthing back to normal. But when I update the version to CFW 4.01 M33 --> CFW 4.01 M33-2, the same problem happens.
I decide to re-laod to CFW 3.71 M33-2 using the Pandora Battery + MMS. But this time, the same text entry problem happen after I had reload to CFW 3.71 M33-2.
Do you had any solutions to help me out here or please provide me some link that I can solve this problem. I am unable to surf the web or enter text. But I am able to play the Games from the MS. Had not try video or Music yet.
2) By the way, what is the usage for 1.50 ADD ON? what does it do or it is neccessory?
3) During a game, when I press HOME button to exit, the message that pop up and ask if you would like to exit, Yes or No? I able also unable to select any as all the buttons become dead. It this normal?
I had read through a few thread here but is unable to find a solution. please help or direct me on the above 3 issues. Thanks a lot.
Hi There, Can anyone help?
1) I had noticed that the problem in text entry mode is that it keep switching between the simple keyboard mode & the full keyboard mode non-stop.
2) The home button to exit games problem above seem to be related to the above text entry problem.
By the way, if I enable the VshMenu under configuration in the Recovery Menu, the PSP will hang up when exit to XMB. It this a bad update done by me?
Hi Larry,
Will the the Option 3 - Dump Nand in Service mode with MMS help to restore the PSP to the original stage when newly purchase. And I can start all over to install CFW 3.71 M33-2.
I had been searching the web but still no solution.......... please help, Thanks again

It shouldn't take that long. It only takes a minute or so for the 5.00 M33 update
Do you have an original pro duo memory stick or is it fake. Course I have both and it still does not take that long.

You answer "y" to format, then you must wait until it says pull out memory stick, disable usb, put memory stick back in and enable usb again.
You should probably do it again to be sure its a proper format.

Excellent guide!! It's very clear and hopefully i'll be trying it later. I think i've been reading old instructions in my searches in google because they keep saying i have to downgrade ( i have a 3.71 phat and my son has a slim 3.72) so i was quite worried how to do that. I've been directed here so i pressume that it's not necessary to downgrade to 1.50 first so i can just install the cfw straightaway! ( i hope!)

I was given the PSP and memory stick by my brother but I'm fairly sure it's real. It says MagicGate supported when I check it on the PSP and it looks fairly pukka. Any other way I can check?
Very odd that mine took so long in that case. I tried a small ISO on the card to see how that played and it seemed to be fine speed-wise.
It only said pull out memory stick after I had pulled it out (after waiting for 5 minutes or so) but it was obviously Ok to do the flash to 3.71 CFW with the pandora battery as that went through fine. Again - bizarre.
Maybe Larry could just tweak the guide to say wait for it to tell you to pull out the memory stick as otherwise it doesn't give any feedback on the PSP that it is actually doing anything, and the LED wasn't flashing either, hence why I gave up waiting and yoinked it out myself.
Anyway, I'm happily on 5.00 M33-3 now so I'll just count myself lucky it all worked ok.

But wouldn't you think, that if they've made mobo's that can't be hacked wouldn't they put them in all models ? It would be logical. On the new mobo's when you put in the pandora and mms does it actually work like show a menu and stuff and then when your try it fails and bricks. Or does it just do nothing ?
Thanks again

Theres no reason to tweak the guide. Just follow the instructions in the guide and on the easy installer.
@illest617
This guide already includes updating to 5.00 M33 so no need to be adding your own steps and downloads to your post to update to 5.00 M33.
It only confuses users.

That's called doing your homework. Always should dump your nand, just in case something ever goes wrong, you have a backup.

Thanks for your reply, believe me i've been looking on so many pages about installing CFW, but when i check on google it points me to advice given last year or older so i wasn't sure if nowadays it is still necessary or if newer programs overcome the need to dump nand anymore.

They mean that Sony is already up to 3000 series. You said your friend has a brand new 1000 series FAT PSP out of the box. The chances of that these days would be rare.
