Hey all, new to this so bare with my very newbish question. What would be the ideal compression range if you want excellent quality and still keep extras? I have read most say never to go below 60%. How noticable is the difference at 60% compaired to the original copy?

I have my new computer with a DVD burner coming at the end of the week so I havent had time to test different %ages. Thanks for any input.

ur best bet is to leave it on the default which is about 64%. i have found that different dvd's produce different results. about 1 in 20 for me produce poor quality at 64%. unfortunally its a case of trial and error for a bad dvd. shit i no but thats life. unless ne1 else can tell how to overcome. watch this space!
hope this helps

Your question is like taking a bath, no one knows what it is you will find satisfactory -

satisfactory quality is in the eye of the beholder -

I have a 19" monitor and a 65" Big Screen TV and I haven't had an unsatisfactory backup from Shrink -

and now my friend, it's time you got your feet wet -

Grab yourself a good RW DVD and -

When your PC comes, spend some time and guess what, in a few weeks, you'll have your answer -

Hey Pete,

Out of interest what compression do you use?

I only have a 68cm (roughly 28") TV but usually strip the extras and keep the compression above 90% in most cases.

If you are having good results on your big TV with lower compression than me, i would be very interested to know.

Thanks in Advance

I have been using shrink for a while and I like to keep it above 70%. On some nicer tvs that I have used, when it drops below 65% I notice some more fragments.

scratch77,

Every DVD is a different size, that's why it's so hard to pick a number - the DVD's size dictates the amount of compression need

I once thought I was getting poor picture quality from my backup of "Scarface" - some scenes looked blurry - then I tried the original and found it to be blurry also - (The two were exactly the same) I keep the size in Shrink at 4.33GB - allowing a "touch" of gray to show at the end of the green bar. I get perfect backups consistently!

I also backup using the following:

1. DVDShrink (ver. 3.0 Beta 5, ver. 3.1.4 and ver. 3.1.6 Beta 2) + Nero

2. DVD43 / AnyDVD (I have both) + CloneDVD

3. DVD43 / AnyDVD + DVD2One

4. DVD43 / AnyDVD + Nero Recode 2

5. DVD Decrypter in File mode, (for DVD-5's) + Nero

6. DVD XCopy Xpress (ver. 2.5.1, 3.0 and 3.2.1) + 321 Gone

7. Decrypter in ISO mode

(My favorites in their order, One, Two and Three :-)
