Last chance to buy AnyDVD or CloneDVD with free updates

article published on 2 December, 2008

SlySoft sent us a note that they will be changing their upgrade policy soon. Currently, if you buy any of SlySoft's products, you'll get free updates for your lifetime. To be fair for its current and past customers, this policy wont change for existing customers, but soon new customers will get the updates only for one year, a familiar policy with many software products nowadays. So ... [ read the full article ]

This is unfortunate. This may push people to pirate this software as working updates/copies can be found all over the net.

I've had AnyDVD for about 5 years now and have no issues with it. I guess it's just tough economic times for everyone.

Ya their prices were bad enough but this...is a bit much... unless they sell them for 15-20 a pop and release a new version every year or 2 with free updates for the current version until the newer one is released, I could get behind that hell why not do quarterly updates to your main version untill a new version comes out.

I'm with ZippyDSM on this one. This is just a way for them to boost there profits. A year or two ago they did the same thing and raised the prices for $10 across the board, nothing changed except everything was more expensive. Now they are going to start charging new customers for upgrades. Buy AnyDVD for +$10 more, want to rip HD/Blu-Ray Discs? Well that will be another near $40. Any now if you don't buy them soon enough you will have to pay a yearly fee to continue receiving updates.

What used to set this company apart from the others is now completely gone I strongly believe that this will slowly kill off there customer base.

They still make a solid product but lets face it this is not a way to sell a product you plan on supporting into the future, the greed has kicked in more than creating a buffer for lawsuits.

The only catch with losing their customer base is that, as far as I know, they are the only game in town for BD+ circumventing. If you want to rip blue-ray with BD+ you need their program. Too bad DVDFab gave up on HDDecrypter.

For now it wont take much for others to come in and by then they might have sold off the brand and moved on.

If we think the AnyDVD business model is bad - what about Nero and their crap ? Version 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 oh wait - we are now on to version 9 - it's still crap , full of bloatware but if you paid 100 euros for version 8 last year - you only have to pay 60 euros for version 9 this year and to hell with any updates for any previous versions that you may have bought - what a bargain huh ? NOT - get ready for version 10 with an even worse and unfathomable GUI in 2009.

Bloatware..er... "normal" programs do not require monthly updates to support new media.

What if Nero and it silk wanted 300$ a version it would lose profits because everyone would pirate it...

That's right. I could still be using Nero 6 despite the new version 9, and it would work fine. With AnyDVd, by next year the original version is near obsolete because there are new protections with every major film release.

I mean they would be better off dropping the price to 15-20USD for the main versions you'd sale at least twice as much breaking even with current price you move to 50+usd you sale less breaking even or worse yet losing money....

At least they aren't making existing customers pay the mark up prices.
If it's the only company that can currently crack Blu-ray then i'm sure they won't need to worry about customers since Blu-ray burners are coming down in price.

Yes but you would need a BR player cabple of player DB+ and a costly BR burner... I do not think you can just recode a BR movie onto 4 DL discs and keep the majority of its visuals.

There are many options available such as cutting out all but 5.1 audio and compressing to 720p to fit on a dvd-5/9. At this point the most economical approach is playing BR rips of your hard drive in a htpc or ps3. With either of these approaches it's still a rather hefty investment considering the cost of a BR drive, very large/numerous hard drives, video cards, sound system capable of decoding the newest audio codec's, and a large hd capable tv... then comes the trial and error of using various programs to get the rips to play right.

unless your an hd junky and already have most if not all of the aforementioned hardware it's really not worth it at this point, never mind paying 20-25$ for BR media (just thinking of making a coaster with one of those gives me the chills).

Yeah I agree, its sad about the cost for updates for new customers after the year is over, I think that was inevitable, I just hope they do not change thier minds in the future and charge for updated no matter when you bought it.
