Man shot for being loud in movie theater

article published on 28 December, 2008

James Joseph Cialella of Philadelphia has been arrested after shooting a man he accused of being too loud during a screening of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Police say family of the man continually disrupted the movie and Cialella eventually threw popcorn at the man's son before shooting the father in the arm. The shooter was found by detectives still carrying the gun in ... [ read the full article ]

Too bad we dont have more competent mods here to remove some of the dumbasses on this board. And we dont seem to have a "report" button for the idiots who think its "no big deal" to shoot someone in the f'ing face.

Tell you what, goons..YOU shoot someone in the face, and see if you can NOT see that person's face in your dreams for the next 20 years.

Idiots.

All of you.

This incompetent moderator (who just happens to be from a country where the only people who have guns are the police, the army and criminals, oh and farmers) had already commented in the thread and is still watching the replies.

I've been to MANY theaters with problems like these and just about gave up going but since it has always been a strong hobby of mine I had to change when I go & where I go. Instead of going on a huge Friday night release I now go on a Sunday or maybe a Saturday EARLY matinée...basically empty & quiet plus I get to save some money while I'm at it and every now and then catch a "free" second movie ;) then to top it off I go to a Theater that is far out away from "in town/city" that is a pain in the butt to get to by bus for the teens etc. (which happens to be the nicest one around also so it works out fine for me again).

And the last thing I do is never leave my house without carrying my sidearm. I have the LEGAL right to carry concealed and I exercise that right every single day. Everyone has their own views about the "public" and guns and thats fine, but I'd be damned if someone has the intent to harm me, a loved one or a close friend. That "ain't" gonna happen. Now that is not at all to say I rely on my right, because I NEVER have and don't need too, as I have absolutely no problem putting someone in their place to their face in a public setting. Especially since the usual loud retort "I don't think EVERYONE here paid good money to hear other people converse throughout this movie" or if I am really pissed just a simple but VERY loud STFU quiets them down quick enough.

Then I go to theater management after the movie is done and get some free tickets to any other showing at any other time just for the inconvenience of them not doing the job they actually get PAID to do. But in all honesty it gets to the point I don't even want to bother with people who have no common sense or basic decency to those around them...don't even get me started with crying, whiny bad attitude little demon children whose parents are OBLIVIOUS to their public terrorizing! Gets me mad just thinking about it.

Insanely true, i cant stand going to movie on opening night these days and probably not even opening weekend. No matter how good the movie is the teenie boppers are out hanging in front of the theatre 50 people deep. They laugh obnoxiously during horror, action, dramas when its not funny. With the ticket price at $10:50 here in Virginia(USA) its just not acceptable.I couldnt agree with you more on this one Oner

It is sad that Oner is so correct in (his) assestment. It seems that the only safe way to enjoy a movie nowadays is at home with a nice home theatre set up.

FYI for windsong.. when I was in the peoples army I shot quite a lot of people thanks.. stone dead.

Going to the cinema here is a nightmare.. miles from anywhere in the middle of a horrible rough housing estate. Trying to get home after a film means braving the gang of teenage drunk yobs at the bus stop.. or walking through a very dangerous place.

So.. I download and watch at home.. or wait for them coming on tv.

It is nice to see that for someone so opinionated to their views wants to oppress someone else view and opinions. This guy was an idiot to have shot the other man but the grand majority of us here share his message, not his deed which is why, as a person sharing his view and opinion, a lot of us can relate with his action for the message he brought across. No one wants to shoot someone else for the same reason and if you are too dense to understand that we here were all expressing an approval or in agreement to his actions as a clear message to STFU in a movie theater, then you obviously did not "get it". In short since you did not get it, these are opinions, nothing more and you have the ability to tune these out yourself if it so much offends you.

Calling people names is not going to get any sympathy here so I suggest you stop, point being keep your opinions to your self if this so bothers you, otherwise accept the posts for what they are, not for what you think they can be: they are just expressions of frustration, nothing more

Globe & Bryston ~ I agree. Just to go to the movies + popcorn, candy, sodas & a couple of "Video Games while you wait" ends up costing what it would be for 2 BD's!...F that. I'll catch a matinée sneak in a 16 oz Coke and some candy. Done. The bulk of my "disposable income" will be invested into my house and home theater...

Speaking of which... Oner, you may want to check out my new set up on the "Post Pictures Of Your Setup (PS3 etc)!" thread. I have been working a ridiculous amount of hours to finally be able to reward myself with a high end Home Theater System...

Oner Edit: Yeah I saw that, real nice & clean! Hopefully this condo deal I am working on goes through...then I'll have to get with you for some audio options etc.

Either that or learn sign language...then again a gang member in the audience might get the wrong impression and shoot away anyway. Personally, I gave up on the movie theater attending fiasco, it's just too much of a hassle: get ready, pick up your date, find parking....find parking....still can't find parking....found one....walk twenty blocks back to the movie theater, take out your debit/credit card only to learn their credit machine is broken, dig for cash, buy tickets, buy your 20 dollar small pop corn and drink bundle, getting a seat in a desired location and waiting through endless previews for the movie to start. By the time the movie starts I am beat and knocking out. And now I need to worry about getting shot for being too loud (would suck if I did knock out and snored away and got shot for it)? I would rather forget this and just rent a movie

Have you been in a movie theater in Philly? They don't shut up, it's incredible. I won't go to watch a movie in Philly.

It's wrong to get to extremes but Philly is out of control and you can get shot anywhere.

Wasn't Philly was one of the first stadiums to have an in house jail with judge? It wasn't cause of their courteous behavior....
Even the Philly fans that come to my neck of the words (WDC) are just down right rude and nasty during games and that's putting it mildly.

I'm glad no one had a gun when I took my Whoopie cushion to the movie! That was when I was a kid, I had a blast, but now days I would have been shot.

After reading the last several posts, I may need to come to the conclusion, that we, as a people, have become much less tolerant, and rather short tempered and selfish. This sadly, is nothing to aspire to.

History repeating itself - nothing new and as usual the same is said about every generation or period of history. Colonialization is just one of many examples. But that is for another thread - not this one.

If taken just in the context of this article - why should be people be tolerant of rude behavior in a movie theater that they paid good money for? I don't stand for it. Granted shooting isn't the answer but if you read the posts in the thread - EnigmaCM put it nicely - people have had enough of this behavior - I do not call that short tempered - more like trying to be tolerant than finally saying enough is enough.
People have adjusted when they go to the movies just to get away from the poor behavior and Hollywood wonders why ticket sales are down (well that & bad movies).
Selfish well yeah I like to watch my movie in a nice quiet theater eating my popcorn and not listening to cells going off, people just rambling about anything or crying babies in an R rated movie.

Thank you sir for the praise. I mean, in general, no matter where you are from or wherever you watch your movies you are always going to face a loud mouth here and there, there is no avoiding it. This is going to sound morbidly funny but I would love to beat the hell out of the person who allowed eating in the theater. That adds to the noise. Then you got the loudmouths which makes it worse. And I love the solution most theaters have resulted to: turn up the volume. I know in Florida they have started cell phone canceling modules to jam phone signals, why not make industry wide? My thing is this idiot did two things, one right and one wrong: he helped reawaken frustrations myself and others have when going to the movie theater and in his message, basically did a "I told you to STFU", something all of us have always wanted to hear or see or even do. The bad thing is the guy got shot and his family was assaulted by that highly salted popcorn. They should of listened is all I would say in this case. I don't approve of his methods but it will be very hard to disagree that he got his point across and had it just been a fist fight or an argument, I would of felt no sympathy for said victim.

On a separate note, wonder what would happen if someone showed up late, opening the door, letting light in and looking around either for a seat or their friends? For these people I would recommend tripping them. Sure it is considered assault if caught and charged but it gets the point across as well without a gunshot lol. Finally, for all "non sympathizers": as I stated in a previous post, these viewpoints are all opinions we have a right to express and, in my opinion, reflect what most of us are fed up about and thus result in all these responses you might find offensive or just wrong. You know what they say about opinions: opinions are like...., everyone has one; well you know what I mean, I just hope people here can understand or comprehend sarcasm

I also agree 100% but you might want to lay off of the candy and coke ... I see these 300# slobs around the movie theater all the time shoving all that crap down their faces ... you know they have to stink with Diabitees .....
