Hi There,
I obtained a job lot of PS3's recently as I run a games business online, however, I'm in need of some advice and I'm a bit confused with one of the consoles that we got hold of...
I've posted the auction on eBay which can be seen here, there is a lot of photos on there that might help you to identify the console - eBay Auction
I've put the console as a developement console as that what it looks like to me, maybe I'm wrong??
Just a few questions:
1) The firmware comes on V1.02, is this something that is really old and outdated? Or is it something that is worth a bit of money and very rare?
2) Could anyone enlighten me and let me know if it is a dev console or test console etc?
3) The console can not be updated via normal firmware updates, is there a reason for this?
4) How much is it worth :) ? (the all important question).
5) Could you let me know anymore information about it, or provide any links to something?
Thanks in advance everyone! :)
Regards
Lewis

Its definitley not a Dev Kit as they look completely different to that.
But its definitley not a regular retail console and Im not too sure sony would be happy having you selling it on ebay.
It looks like a test console for debugging and it has some pretty interesting looking things such as HDCP control which is definitley illegal to have in a retail console.
I have a feeling this is a test console, v1.02 was afaik the first firmware update for the ps3 released before the consoles actual release and its only changes were a "few unnamed goodies" and some "housekeeping issues". This could be definitley worth a good amount of money to someone in the PS3 dev scene as those early launch firmwares are probably full of security holes.

Hey,
Thanks for the update.
Any ideas where I would be able to sell this? Its just stock we are looking turning around? Maybe I should just leave it on eBay?

I wouldn't recommend selling it on ebay because like sobhy said you could get in hot water for it. I'd ask some of the hacking groups what its worth to them, I'm sure they would be interested in it. Which one would pay the most or which one would yield the most research I don't know.

Sony explicitly don't allow these to be resold afaik, they were sent pre-launch for reviewers and game devs to test and then to be sent back or in some cases kept.
Sony could technically sue you as you would be selling an item that is illegal to resell(Atleast on such a public website).
If I were you, I would keep it and study it further because these consoles would be exactly easy to obtain.
Two choices Keep it and study it, is there any strange options there that arent in retail consoles?
Or
Sell it to a competent psp/ps3 hacker like Dark_aleX who could benefit from it.
Just make very sure Sony have no proof whatsoever of you selling this console.

Actually if it isnt too much trouble could you take a pic of the console and any strange options you find in the menu?
It is definitley a Debug or Test console if you cannot play DVD or Blu Ray movies.
Im almost guessing now this is one of those prototype - for testing purposes only models that were around the place earlier.
Does it say that anywhere?
Could we have any pics please?

Hi There,
I put a few more pictures on the auction. Not sure what other options there are on it.
Let me know if you want to see certain screens and I'll take some.

Hi There,
I've just been offered £250 for the console.
Is this a good price? Or should I wait and see if I get any higher interest?

If its by a private message in ebay I wouldnt risk it being a scam..
£250 would get anyone a regular brand new 80GB or used 80gb with games so for a PS3 test console that has backward compatibility £250 is WAY too cheap

Is it possible to take a few shots of the menu, especially the system optons and game menu.

Hi There,
I'll take some photos now and send some links to it in a few minutes.
It doesn't say test underneath it.
Just seems a bit odd, its in a kind of blue tinted case (really dark but kind of see-through), I've got a PS3 of my own and it doesn't have a lot of the things in this menu. Also, it wasn't upgradable... Very strange.
I'll post some pics soon.
Cheers

Hi There,
I just turned on the console and took some pictures of the menu. The menu I've just sent you a picture of is the settings menu. All the other menus are empty and don't have anything in (like video, music etc) apart from Games which has the 'Game data settings' in and the one where you can sign up to the playstation network.
Pictures can be found at the following link:

Relatively large sized images! (about 2.5mb each)
If you want any more pics, let me know.

Hmm this is pretty rare looking, i've never heard of a translucent PS3 case.
That firmware is definitley not retail and wont accept retail firmware.
Its not Demo firmware either as all the demo consoles I see in shops have no options like that.
Its not a debug console either as they have TEST underneath.
This is definitley something rare though, have you tried a blu ray movie or any game in it yet?
If its a debug console movies will not work but games should definitley work.

Hi, this console is like everyone says an early test/dev console primarily used for science much like the folding@program, this was issued to several hundred universities and other primary technology schools around the globe, my friend has one at his uni and has specific access for running C++ natively straight onto the Cell processor. it still however DOESN'T allow access to RSX like any other PS3.
This would be Highly illegal to sell on ebay and i would quickly remove it before you get a lawsuit on your hands.
this could be beneficial to you or some other dev. i would like to utilize this console but for linux reasons only. unfortunatly i dont think i could take it off your hands due to the fact i have a dev kit anyway. Hackers could buy this for a great price..
i myself would look for 1000 - 3000 GBP for this.
good luck whoever ends up with this. also, slightly off topic.. anyone looking for a dev kit for sale... im looking to sell it.. PM me
Ayame, i live for you xxx even though the sight may fade the feelings shall always remain
Ayame, i owe you my life but thats all i have to give to you as you already have my love and my heart
forever yours Joe xxxxx

Ah thats it, Now i remember hearing about this.
You say it has no stickers anywhere?
Try playing a game on it.
Im nearly sure this is a cluster computing console used for science as part of the supercomputer project so this doesnt look to be legal to sell to anyone.
If it plays a PS3 game though then Im pretty stumped as to what this console may be

Hi There,
I've just put a bluray disc in and it does play it.
There are different options in the menu such as "region settings". Not sure if this is on the PS3 I have, but it allows you to change the region of the console from UK, Japanese, Korean, USA etc.
Thanks for the update everyone.
Anyone have any idea where I can sell this if I can't put it on eBay?
I don't really want to be holding onto it and it would be great to get £1000 - £3000 for it.
Kind Regards

Sorry, I mean't to say it DOESN'T play bluray discs.
I tested it with a game, and it did recognise it, but it said I needed to update the console to V1.5 or above.
I assume it works with games once it gets higher firmware on.

Yeah but i dont think u can upgrade it to retail firmware so i suggest upgrading it to another debug firmware, and another thing, dev consoles might be able to run back ups with the HDD+ disc swap trick .... if you know what that is...
PC = HP DV7 Entertainment Laptop (2008)
Intel Core2Duo @2.26GHz, 3GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia Ge Force 9600m GT 512MB, Windows 7 Unltimate

Hi There,
Not sure what the swap disc thing is, but not bothered about playing backups or copies or anything on the console.
I just wondered what the console was and how much it was worth.
I want to sell it on to someone as we don't really have any use for it. If anyone knows where I can sell it, please let me know.
Also, just to confirm, the console has one sticker on, but it is blank, apart from that, there is no information on it apart from the 'Playstation' text on the front like shown in the pictures.
Kind Regards

If selling it is all your after.
The only safe way that will get you a good price would be find a PS3 Developer looking for one, they will happily buy it off you as these usually need a licence to buy from sony

Hi There,
Ok, do you know where I could find a PS3 developer to take it off my hands?
What is the main reason that stops me being able to sell it on eBay? Is it actually 'Illegal'? Or is it just something that Sony would frown upon?
