maybe that is where the confusion comes in from the beginning of this thread.

In apps I bet the first one is labeled Step 0, and so on, so whoever packaged the soft-mod package set it to flow down the homebrew channel once you install the homebrew channel via the bannerbomb.

Hopefully the above link fixes everything (though I'm still not certain it is broken just can't get a backup to run and haven't tried it on a usb harddrive).

Thanks again. You've been a ton of help figuring out what the extensions and things do.

ahh now I understand. Actually, that's not a terrible way of organizing things if you want a newb to install it. Of course, it doesn't help anything for someone who actually wants to know what they are doing to there wii.

There is no 1 size fits all solution to soft-modding a wii because everyone has different circumstances. Therfore, instead of trying to make a master-guide, the different apps, ios, etc. should be labelled and described so people can decide what they want to do. Rather than spoonfeeding people and making them install things they may not want or need.

Yeah. Especially since I didn't even know that Mcios or whatever is just for gamecube games which I couldn't care less about.

So since this has turned into a q&a which I appreciate. What is a CIOS? is it just custom operating system.

Yea I've read up on it, think of the wii as having many different partitions like on a hard drive, each one has a different operating system that controls it called an IOS. Some of these "partitions" I guess are vulnerable and you can load custom codes (or cIOS, custom independant operating system) on them to run homebrew.

That's my understanding of it anyways.

Thanks that helps my understanding a lot. I didn't find a lot of places that explained anything just more of do this or do that.

There are so many kids and idiots in the scene these days that guides have to be written so a monkey can understand them or you get people asking the same simple question 1000x which does nothing but clutter the boards and anger the people trying to help everyone.

Unfortunately that means people who want to actually know whats going on have to read on and look farther to find there answers. But that's just how it is.

As brucedlx said.

An IOS (officaly means Input Output System) is in a sense an Independent Operating System.

cIOS is just a custom IOS that Waninkoko created to let non-official homebrew run on the Wii.

The cIOS does not patch or change any other IOS in the Wii System. It is in it's own an operating system just like any other Official Nintendo IOS but has unoffical code written in it to load Homebrew Applications like Wiigator Backup Launcher or USB Loader etc. etc.

It is installed to the IOS249 slot. So in a sense the cIOS can be called IOS249 since that is where it is installed.

If you want more info on an IOS go HERE and read up.

One last question. When you install bootmii to boot2, does it change the way the wii first boots up...ie asking you which partition to go into?

Yes, but only if the SD card which you use to back your wii files to is in the SD slot. You can take out the bootmii folder or just rename it and it will boot normally, and if you ever need it again you can just put it back on the SD Card.

so this is why i think something is screwy. I formatted the sd card and put the file posted above in it (app folder & wad folder only) and when i go into the homebrew channel I don't see the file CMDVDX34 as one of the buttons. Only the buttons that were installed prior which at this point I might take a picture of.

I figured the wad manager is only to open the wad, so any idea why CMDVDX34 isn't showing up in my homebrew channel?

Is it in a folder called /apps/CMDVDX34/boot.dol on your SD card? If so it should show up regardless of what it is.

oooooh ouch that's a bad one! You should have cleared out your SD card before you did anything! It was written in red in the guide!

That pirate thing is nasty, the writer of the program wrote it so it searched your SD card for downloaded games and if it found it, it would write info to your NAND(!!!) to let it know you are a pirate.

Luckily there is a way to remove it,

If you get a piracy message run this
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
"This small tool will delete all the files written in shared2 (settings, hacks) by preloader (and by DVDx 3.4).
I take no responsibility and no credits for this (it's a very small modification of Tona's setting_replace, it's 99,99% his code)."
Thanks to Caitsith2, Void, Tona and Davi92.
Wow I don't know I did that same exact thing on the same exact guide and it worked fine! I made sure to format the SD card.
I'm telling you though I definitely formatted the card first. I'm thinking I was already past where it wanted me to be *shrug*
well when I put in the only backup I have when I go into the backup loader and hit start the screen just goes blank. All I have is some shitty -r's though so I can't tell if that is the problem. I figured I would at least get an error.
I'm thinking its the discs I use. I decided to start over and did the "Guide: How to Launch Backup Games From Disc Channel On 4.0 Firmware. " and got through every step without any problems. Still the disc doesn't show up. I figured since it has you downgrade to an older system menu then back up it would reset everything I softmodded and redo it all. This would seem accurate right?
Yea it would seem like that, I'm afraid you are experiencing the sticky side of soft-mods and it's not fun. Not to fret though, I'm sure there is always a way out as long as your hardware is fine.
Did you end up doing that bootmii boot2 at anytime? You might want to try a restore and start clean if you did.
Are you still getting the piracy message or are you past that now?
I didn't end up doing boot mii and I haven't tried to go back and do the piracy thing.
All I have done since then is downgrade the firmware then upgrade the firmware and follow that tutorial. Should I retry the tutorial for dvdx thing?
I really wish there was just a way i could check my stupid version number I was running.
