Well then thank you ever so much for taking the effort to write the guide and hopefully this will be the last time I spam your thread :)

Just one quick question tho: I'm pretty sure that the problem I had with my flash was that the xbox powered down just after I had erased the drive losing the detection of it in JF. Could this power down have been avoided if I would have put the AV cable into the back of the xbox while trying to flash? Have just read about this method today, if it is possible to do so then it might be a good idea to mention that in your guide.

Thanks again, all the help was greatly appreciated.

Edit: just seen pornzi's post. That's kinda what happened to me I think. Couldn't see the drive in JF after I hit the liteon erase button. If you can remember which port you got it working on before then just try liteon erase again with that port selected. You may have to point JF to your dummy.bin that you already extracted after that then just follow the guide after the erase. Hope that helps.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to make tutorials like this. People like yourself make this whole process easier for average xbox modders like myself.

Everything I have read everywhere else regarding the Lite-On drives tell me that I have to purchase a "probe" or a "spear" in order to mod the Lite-on drives. However, your tutorial clearly leaves this requirement out of the process.

Is the spear/probe required only for the 74850c Lite-on drives?

Help! Wifes gonna kill me ={

I screwed up, I think the xbox powered off in the middle, now I'm stuck with no drive. I found this tutorial, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/762847, is there a newer way?

ADNUP, as long as you got a good DVDkey, you are fine. Disconnect the Lite-ON drive and shut down JF. Connect the Lite-ON to a different SATA port and start up JF again. The Lite-ON will be undetected because it has no firmware on it. What you need to do is select the I/O port that the Lite-ON is on. Re-send the Lite-ON erase and power cycle when prompted (power cycle = disconnect DVD drive power for 1 second and plug back in. Be careful as you are dealing with power).

You don't want to power off the XBOX 360. You want to disconnect the power cable from the DVD drive for 1 second and then reconnect.

Sorry about that OmicronBP. If you have a stock 74850C Lite-ON, it requires the probe/spear. If you have the 83850C Lite-ON, you do not need the probe/spear. With the 83850C, you can dump the encrypted DVDkey via SATA.

Hey great tutorial, everything went relatively smooth for me up until the final step, 'writing the firmware to the drive'. JF Hangs shortly after the process begins and if left long enough the JF window goes white, any easy remedy for this?, or alternatively is it possible to use dosflash in conjunction with the dummy.bin, identify.bin and inquiry.bin i have retrieved to write the firmware? thanks

JF freezes up at this step, sometimes i get a few more dots after "writing blank 0:"

Are you using the VIA SATA card? If so, try removing the driver:

1. Disable VIA card in Device Manager.
2. Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers and remove "viamraid.sys" or "vsmraid.sys".
3. Re-enable VIA card in Device Manager.
4. Re-Boot PC.

If you aren't using a VIA card, just try a different SATA port. You will have to switch the I/O port in the MTKFlash tab once you have physically change the SATA port.

Note: Now that you have erased the firmware, you drive will no longer eject and will not be detected by JF. Just remember what I/O port your Lite-ON is connected to and resend the Lite-ON erase.

Thanks for the help, i am indeed using the via card (VT6421A)when i originally went to remove the drivers i found neither "viamraid.sys" or "vsmraid.sys" did i do something wrong during that step? should they be there?

i was contemplating just creating a fresh xp partition on my hd just for flashing the DVD drive would this remove any driver related issues, or any other issues? thanks again for the help

You could try that or a quick fix would just be to boot DosFlash v1.8 on a USB drive. In my signature is how to make a bootable USB drive. Just format the USB drive as FAT32 and tell the program where to navigate to the boot files to copy them over. Then put your custom Lite-ON firmware on the USB drive along with iXtreme 1.6.

Boot to the USB and type:

dosflash.exe

It should recognize your Lite-ON by it's flash chip, either Winbond/NEX or MXIC. Select the corresponding number to the flash chip. Type W for write and then type the name of your custom firmware bin.

Note: with DOS, there is character limitations. I suggest you name your custom firmware bin like lite16.bin

You don't want to power off the XBOX 360. You want to disconnect the power cable from the DVD drive for 1 second and then reconnect.
Just to make sure, when I am powering the drive on or cutting power, all I will be doing is just disconnecting the power plug from the lite on drive and have the 360 fully powered.

Does the 360 have to be at any particular bootup screen or is just turning it on and leaving it fine?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the novice question. I just want to make sure I clearly understand all the steps before attempting a go. =)

You can do it when it is at the dash board. Just make sure you don't plug the cable in upside down or anything like that.
