Thanks everyone! Thanks for the cake Jan ... I ate it all by myself and zero calories!

@JVC...thanks guy! Sorry to hear about your receiver; that's a real bummer. My friends know I'm a pack-rat and sometimes offer me their old stuff if they upgrade ... if I know of a receiver, I'll let you know; perhaps it could hold you over until you get a new one. No, I haven't gotten any new equipment; I've spent way too much on new equipment already. The Harmony is great ... I was able to clear half a dozen different remotes from the end table next to my favorite chair; I should have bought one ages ago. Let me know how you make out rgarding your receiver.

@ Sam, yours is on Saturday? I managed to hold out a day longer. It'll be 35 big ones for me on Sunday. Birthdays beers for us both this weekend.

It looks like I'm one of the oldies here.

I'm 63, will be 64 in July. I was programming computers in the 60s.

Not of course that any of us three are!
To be honest, I'm surprised how many people there are here in our age group.

Lets not be picking on the old guys! Between Marilyn (NWitch) and I there's 105 years! LOL!!! I'll be 63 next month!

You young guys are lucky! My first real computer was an Atari ST 512, I bought in 1985 with a color 13" monitor for $499. Serial dot matrix printer from Microline was about $300! It was based on the same chip the Mac used and was sort of the poor mans mac only with color! I bought my first CD-Rom for it at a whopping $499 and my first external 20MB hard drive for $299! When I built my first x86 PC, it was an Intel 386, a fast 33 MHz (the first ones were 16MHz). Then I replaced that with the "Super Fast" AMD 40MHz! That first PC cost over $1500 just to build!

There used to be a ton of jumpers on the motherboard where you set the speed, multiplier and CPU type (Intel, Cyrix or AMD). There was no auto detect anything. Anything you installed, you really had to install, and then write Autoexec.bat and config.sys files to make everything work. Now some 247 (and counting) computers later there is no real hard work. If you made a mistake with the jumpers back then you broke the "Cardinal Rule"! Never let the smoke escape! LOL!! If you selected the wrong voltage, you let the smoke out. New CPU time, as there was no shut-down and re-set! Everything was manual. Memory was a blazing 66MHz! You even had to put the parameters in for the hard drive manually. There was no auto-detect when I first started with PCs.

Just remember, if it wasn't for us old enthusiasts who kept computing going as a very expensive hobby, none of us would be here enjoying this forum today! A lot has changed in 22 years!

Clock On,
theone

Only 105? I have a feeling a couple of decades are unaccounted for, but I'm not here to remind anyone of their age. Not sure I'd have the courage to tinker with PCs back then, it all sounds a bit risky!

I started with PCs when I was 16... 17 now.

I remember my first custom build.

AMD Sempron 3100+ OCd to 2.4GHz
754 T-force 6100 mobo
1GB Patriot Signature
X800GTO 256MB(still a decent card)
80GB WD Caviar SE
Raidmax Elite gray case with custom fan holes
Thermaltake T2 430W

It was(and still would be) a very fast home PC. I just sold it, in fact, for $400 to a friend.

I remember my first dual core.

X2 3800+ @ 2.4 then 2.6GHz(now an AM2 4400+ @ 2.6GHz)
4 x 512MB crucial ballistix DDR400(now 2 x 1GB Ballistix)
X850XT 256MB(great card, still very powerful, still have it)(now X1800XT 256MB)
ECS ATi 480 mobo 939(now an M2N SLi Deluxe AM2)
HP HiPro 500W PSU(now an Enermax Liberty 620W)
250GB WD Caviar SE(still have it)
Sunbeam Silent Storm Case(best case I've ever had) (still have it)

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 4GHz(20 x 200) 1.5v 3000NB 2000HT, Corsair Hydro H110 w/ 4 x 140mm 1500RPM fans Push/Pull, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5, 8GB(2 x 4GB) G.Skill RipJaws DDR3-1600 @ 1600MHz CL9 1.55v, Gigabyte GTX760 OC 4GB(1170/1700), Corsair 750HX

I know it's 125 years. Just checking the effects of the new math! LOL!! It's these damn dyslexic fingers! ROFL!!

Seriously, it was a bit risky as there were no RMAs in those days. The warranty was zilch, but it did teach you to be careful. Intel had a fat 30 day warranty! There was no Internet! If something went wrong, unless you were a good customer of your dealer there was no warranty to speak of, maybe 30 days tops! You were totally dependent on your relationship with your dealer. I used to spend about $3000 a month with him for computer parts so I never had any problems! Can't imagine why! LOL!!

I remember getting into it with my then wife and a salesman from Encyclopedia Britanica who wanted to sell us some $2500 worth of books. I had just read an article in a Computer mag about the future of CD-Roms and told this guy that some day in the near future his encyclopedia would be on a couple of CD-Roms for $50 or so and be inter-active with video and all. Both he and my wife told me I was crazy and laughed at me. I threw him out! The only thing I regret is not throwing her out too! Would have saved me a couple years of aggrivation.

Anyway, Old Age is a good thing. It means you lived long enough to learn something, and it was fun!

Best Regards and Happy Birthday to all,
Russ

Could you see a C2D with Hyper-Threading! Or at least memory management on chip! It's not needed right now, but if AMD ever put on the pressure again...............I don't know as my crystal Ball hasn't worked right since I got it back from the shop. Everything's Cloudy! ROFL!!!

Seriously, I have made a few good calls over the years but the best call was the CD-Rom. And the progress of the Coppermine being stopped had me really wondering about Intel, as my dual 1GHz Dell 420 was eating the P4s for breakfast, lunch and dinner until the Northwood came along. And you couldn't even overclock it! I just wonder how Intel feels about the boys who secretly kept developing the Coppermine into the C2D of today. Think of where Intel would be if they had fired the lot for doing what they were told not to do! No C2D, thats for sure! ROFL!!

In exactly 2 weeks, I'll be 63 and I've seen quite a bit in those 63 years. I remember wanting one of those Amstrad 8 bits you guys over there had, while we were stuck with the 8086 and 8088s in a huge box with mostly nothing in it. man have the years flown by! LOL!!

Happy Birthday to all!
