New PS3 firmware update shuts down jailbreak

article published on 7 September, 2010

Sony has released the minor firmware update version 3.42 today, which brings nothing new to the table but blocks the use of PSGroove, the open-source jailbreaking software used to allow homebrew on the console. If you do not update to 3.42, you cannot connect to the PlayStation Network, effectively forcing most users to update. The jailbreak method, which involves running some code ... [ read the full article ]

because it's a Linux based os you could simply come up with your own file system only for the ps3, lock down only signed official files for any other file system or have devs alter their old game files to suit the new system.

all new games released could use this new file system and thus buying any new game would require a new update and you wouldn't be able to burn or make copies because the filesystem would be unknown.

The current jailbreak was made because someone released all the sony dev stuff onto the net, otherwise none of this would have happened.

people saying they made up their own code are probably BSing anyway, even GeoHotz code doesn't jailbreak a PS3 it does nothing really, bar peek and poke.
The problem with that is Sony isn't going to completely alter the system. Especially when that would require all older games to be updated and possibly redesigned. They can systematically try blocking new consoles from getting hacked, but consoles already hacked have their entrails in the open. No system is infallible, they can just be really hard to get into.

no. you see, the majority of DS users have not hacked their console, unlike the majority of PSP users who have. the majority of unhacked consoles mean a large amout of game sales for the DS, the majority of hacked consoles mean a large amount of pirate game downloads for the PSP.

the majority of unhacked consoles mean the game companies are much more likely to make a profit on ds games than psp games as the majority of the particular fanbase who actually pay for the game is much larger. again, is there a more plausible reason? if so please enlighten me
I don't want to get in the middle of this, but just a couple notes:
Who's to say the PSP has more hacked consoles than the DS? More importantly, what are the figures of unhacked consoles? In other words, ignoring the ratio of hacked to unhacked consoles for each type, what are the numerical figures of unhacked consoles for each system? Majorities don't matter, how many unhacked consoles leading to sales matter. Also, what's the payoff for a sale?

Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

Wtf? The DS is one of the most hacked consoles ever! It's incredibly easy! Almost every kid on the planet knows about it! I don't know anybody that does not have a hacked DS. It also makes it much much more versatile.

If you have to be enlightened as to why it's so obviously the more popular handheld anyway, I'm not going to into the list just ask you this... what do the think the letters "DS" stand for?

Sony would be more in with a chance if they made a mobile broadband PSphone ~ with a touch screen. (mini dual thumbsticks would not go astray.) The bloody thing should be able to run apps as well as games and make calls. I predict they would not be able to keep them on the shelves.

And, no, it's not a big ask.

but yes they can have there psn. I will stick to less than 3.42 sorry sony sux 2 b u. if ya just kept the otheros support.. you would have even bigger ps3 sales.. that WAS a huge part of a ps3..

so what ur saying is "oh it has 2 screens so it must be better". i agree most of the world thinks like that, and i never asked why the ds is more popular but you do have a point in that.

you do have a point in the phone part. i personally think, give the psp go an extra thumstick, phone and 3/4g capabilities and there you go. i also believe that they should have a system where you can redeem your current psp games for digital copies for the psp go. then maybe it would have been more of a success, the same can be said for a psp-phone.

Impossible to know without direct figures, but it's safe to say that piracy on the DS is almost as bad (or equal) to piracy on the PSP, given Nintendo's crusade to shut down the R4 and other flash carts, and the recent firmware update on the DSi and XL to block the use of such carts. It's also important to note that Nintendo has sold 130 million or so DS/DSi units while the PSP has sold under 60 million, so that should be just one simple reason as to why the PSP gets "less good games."

Why would I sell a game to a base of 60 million when I can to a base of 130 million? :)

lol no its just more people ALREADY own a psp so no reason to buy 1. as for the ds, the 130 million is a bunch of mommy and daddys buying it for there 10 year old kids. Ive seen one and they are NOTHING to even gawk at. pretty much like the wii lol. Fun for partys but the wii was not created for hard core gamers.

Based solely on keywords, I believe they are trying to say they were in a hacked MW2 ("de-ranking") lobby and are requesting assistance. I'm not too sure though; it's like a tribal native trying to decipher the cryptic text on the side of a fallen aircraft...

I honestly believe nobody can actually understand you. I'm not sure if you're not a native speaker of English, or if you just don't know any grammar. But please, for the sake of everyone you write to, learn at least some basic grammar to break your sentences up with periods. If nothing else, at least learn to use the "..." to add pauses in your train of thought. That would actually be a step up.

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm not trying to make fun. Yes, I popped a joke or two out, but they were directed at the situation. Again, I don't know your situation but it seems to me like you're rambling in another language then converting it with Google Translate. It is very hard for me to understand what you're saying because you are using next to no grammar whatsoever. I honestly can't even tell if you're trolling or trying yourself to insult. Until you use some grammar so I can actually understand what you're asking for, I'm going to stop responding.
By the way, taking a shot in the dark here but: http://www.callofduty.com/blackops/dlc
I'm not sure if you were asking for that...
