Hi everyone

This is my first post so I?ll try my best to be brief. I?m not a novice and have successfully soft modded Wii etc etc. The tutorial I?m going to sue is attached and seems quite straightforward.

I haven?t taken possession of my xbox 360 yet but it?s an elite model and will almost certainly have the Lite On drive.

I?m just confused by two aspects of the tutorial:

? I?ll be using the Connectivity V3 kit. I have sp are USB ports so will be using the TIAO USB key extractor etc etc. Does this mean that the section in relation to USB to Comm connector and the linked need to download that driver doesn?t apply to me?
? This tutorial uses the 1.51 version of ixtreme. Can and how do I update this to play the most recent 360 games after completing the process?
? I currently use a WD external hard drive to play my backed up Wii games. Will this flash allow me to play xbox back ups or do I need to JTAG
? If I need to JTAG how is this achieved with an already flashed DVD drive?
? Can I partition the 320Gb hard drive to play xbox 360 and Wii backups?

Apologies for the length of the post but this forum seems to be the most comprehensive and helpful that I?ve seen and I?m a quick and grateful learner.

Many thanks for your time.

Tony

You need to cut two traces, use a vampire or probe 2 to dump the firmware. Solder them back together, and then flash the drive.

Never used a vampire or Probe 2. Will this be different from the probe that comes with the USB key extractor? Is this the only way of playing back ups from an external HD.

Yes they are different from older probes, as they have dual tips.
Forget the Vampire, because you already have an Xecuter Connectivity V3 kit which the Probe II was made for. Get an Xecuter Probe II (and multimeter) and follow the tutorial on Xecuter's site. Easy and straight-forward.

External HD is a different mod called the JTAG. This can only be performed if your xbox has an older kernel of 7371 or lower. This mod is by no means for noobs. It requires soldering to the motherboard and dumping the nand. You would need to purchase a nand flasher to dump the nand. If your dash is above 7371, it cannot be done. Check in system settings, then system info. It will say 2.0.7371 or probably in your case 2.0.9xxx which means it cannot be done.

Is this the only way to play xbox 360 back up games from an external hard drive?

Are there tutorials available specifically on this?

The JTAG method is the only way to play backups from your HDD without the disk in the drive. For a decent tutorial, see Here

Many thanks for your help and time.

It's interesting that someone has said it's easy and straightforward while others say not for noobs!!

I'll probably stick to backing up to DVD so would be grateful for your help on the thwo other points in the orginal post:

I'll be using the USB key extractor as have plenty of spare USB ports. Does this mean I don't have to bother with the USB to Comm adaptor?

If I wish to update the Ixtreme to 1.6 to play newe game back ups will I be able to update to that after flshing with 1.51?

Many thanks once again.

dude, again, you need to do some research. LT is the most current unless you have a hitachi. The usb extractor cannot be used. You need TO CUT TRACES AND SOLDER THEM if your drive is a Lite-on.

Sometimes a PHD just aint enuf right. Here is the hyper link to the site with the process that I was following. http://www.wiihacks.com/xbox-360/18997-h...60-dummies.html You will see that it explains that you can use this workaround to flash and spoof Lite ons without soldering etc.

From this and the advice on here my conclusion was:

JTAG to play games from external DVD play (and emulators, blah blah...)

Flash to play back ups from DVD (even Lite ons if this process works.

I have been doing nothing but research for the last week but maybe that's the problem.

Nice to talk to ya.

OMG. ALL LITE-ON'S REQUIRE SOLDERING. That post is over a year old and was the old way for the 7xxx series liteons only. To be safe on live and dump the laser calibration, you must do a FULL dump of the firmware. This requires soldering. No ifs, thens or buts.

Hi again

Just unpacked my elite and checked the kernel which is 2.08955 (which is the same as the dashboard) I haven't had time to check the DVD Drive but guess the kernel suggests it's a newer Lite On.

With this new intelligence can someone please advise whether the syatem is capable of being flashed to play back ups from DVD (I've given up hope of playing back ups from an external hard drive as I do with the Wii)

Many thanks

Check Modking30's post #11

He clearly tells you what you need to do with lite on drives. The answer is YES, it can be flashed. You really need to do a little more reading though. I would suggest searching for jungleflasher.pdf. Download the pdf file and it will answer the majority of your questions about flashing that lite on. There are tons of tutorials on here and youtube. Search these forums for RMA method if you still are having problems.

Do we really need to keep holding your hand? The only drives that cannot be flashed yet are the Slimlines. Wait till novemeber or so and it should be released to the public.

Hi again
Can you please cut me some slack here? I?m not trolling; I had to google it to see what it meant. The facts are I?m 51, no noob and have a very demanding 8 year old son.
I?ve softmodded our Wii successfully and am more than willing to try the flash. It?s just that the terminology is not always clear to me and there is often some disagreement about the best flashing method.

Can I just test my understanding?

JTAG for older drives only (this would be the only way to play back ups from external hard drive).
Flash without solder to play DVD back ups but only for older 7series drives.
Flash with solder for ?the newer Liteons?.

The kernel for my 2009 elite is 2.08955 as previously stated so I guess it?s a newer Liteon (I haven?t had time to take the cover off the xbox 360 to view the DVD Drive as it?s going to be my son?s birthday present so I?ve had to hide it most of the time).

I have a Jungle flasher PDF dated July 3 2009. It covers the Liteon DG16DTS 74850C and refers to use of probe to avoid soldering. The previous owner told me the xbox was bought early 2009 so it may be this series.

I?ve also searched for RMA method but couldn?t get very far with that.

I?ll check my drive tomorrow but if it is as above can I follow the Jungle flasher tut with no solder. I?ve ordered the Connectivity Kit V3 but this only includes power adaptor, PCI-SATA card, USB key extractor and connectors. I guess I?ll need to get a probe as well.

Apologies for being dumb (I?m not really) but can you help me for the sake of my son. I really do respect your knowledge and am prepared to do the necessary work.

Hope mutual respect is breaking out.

dont worry about being dumb, everyone here was new at one point in time. everyone here is pretty helpful but its the nature of the "forum" beast(those with experience get tired of those that dont too quickly). heres a link to a newer jungleflasher tut link. as far as RMA method or not, it only matters if your son wants to play online. if no then disregard RMA but if he does its the way to go.

Many thanks for the tutorial. Will certainly follow that and report progress. I know my xbox 360 kernel is .8955 but haven't had the chance to check out the version of thr Liteon. I'll procedd when I've done that tomorrow.

Many thanks again.

Just to make it a little easier for you to search for info, people keep referring to the "RMA" hack, but it's actually "MRA" hack for the liteon. There are multiple ways to do the MRA hack, but they all involve cutting traces and soldering. This is the method I prefer http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=698256 while others prefer to use a probe such as the Vampire 2 or CK3 Probe 2. The boxxdr method is fairly easy if you're good at soldering and doesnt require a CK3 or any additional hardware besides a switch and a couple resistors. Make sure you use a multimeter to check your cuts!!

Not all liteons require cut traces, none of the models i have done have thus far, but the newest version, maybe. I made my own probe by following this tut here. I think you are confusing the Dash # with the drive version. that 2.08955 is your dash and it has nothing to do with your drive version. To get your drive version take the xbox apart and look at the sticker on the drive it will tell you what version it is.

it sounds like cutting traces and actually soldering on the PCB is not required in your situation. All you need is a probe, you can make one or buy one. I think most of the posters on here think your console/drive are newer than they are.

You should always have the latest version of jungleflash and the tut.
