I'm trying to put Phonebooth that is on a philips dvd
w on a regular dvd-r. I've tried to just copy with Nero which I have done many times since it is already shrunk, that didn't work. So I tried to use dvd shrink 3.1.7.5, it gets to 99% done then it gives me this error. Dvd shrink encountered and error andcan not continue. Failed to read file g:, data error(cycle redundancy check). I have a pioneer 106 on an HP 1.8 ghz, 512 ram with XP, plenty of hard drive. I have played the movie on my stand alone and computer so I know it works. Any ideas?

I found where the bad part in the movie was, it was in the credits. I used DVD Shrink to edit that part out and it did back it up ok onto the computer but when I put the blank in to burn I got this error message, I should also say that I did some searching on this site for cycle redundancy check and saw that it could have something to do with ASPI layers, so I installed file aspi 471a2, now I'm wondering if I screwed something up. Here is the error message, thanks in advance for any help:

Hi,
It may help to update your version Nero. The version you're using is a very early one and is known to be buggy :)

I am the newbiest of newbies but I too have had this problem. I found that even though I get the error message the DVD will still play all chapters. I believe the problem is (and I read this somewhere else in this forum) that the outside edges of the media sometimes do not have the integrity of the inside portion. What you can do is increase the compression ratio in DVD Shrink by 2 or 3 % before you do back-up. This has worked for me.

when you say increase the ratio, do you mean compress it more or try to make it less compressed so it's better quality?

To keep data from being burned too close to the edge of the media you need to go into the settings and reduce the target file size to something like 4,300 MB :)
Did you update Nero?

I never tried reducing the target size, that sounds like it would work also, but I just increased the compression from say 56% to 58%. This would in effect slighty reduce the quality but 2% isn't noticeable.

I did update Nero, thanks for the advice, I have not used it yet though. This is the first time I have ever gotten an error like that. I will try reducing the target size. Is that something that you do also, if so what is the reason you do it.

I do it for the simple reason that errors have a tendency to crop up at the end of a disc (something to do with the way they're manufactured) so by keeping the target file size lower I avoid errors/skipping/freezing entirely :)

I am having the same problems listed here. I have been using Shrink for quite some time. Just recently I have been getting errors to check the cable?? Weird. So, I contacted the manufacture of the dvd burner and they think it's bad. Well, it is a Kanguru (teac DVW50D) external dual burner. They sent me another one with the guts being a Pioneer DVD RW DVR-1-6D. I am supposed to be able to use either +/- media. Well, through trial and error, I found that I was able with the Teac to use Sony DVD-R. Worked great until I got that error msg of checking the cable.
Ok, now, I do have a file set up for DVD Shrink movies and sub folders for the movies to go into. Shrink does it's thing just fine. My problem is that I can't get Roxio or Nero to burn it... What I like about Roxio (older version) is that it will test and burn. So, it doesn't really burn till it has tested everything.
Last night I wasted 10 dvd-r discs trying to get this to burn right... some had sound, others didn't.
Any clues out there? Which burner do I need to keep?
Also, how much disk space is needed to properly have enough room on the hard drive to do this right the first time with out any waste?
Thanks folks, I need the help...

Nero and Roxio can cause conflicts. When you turn your PC on, Nero and Roxio 'compete' for certain files. this causes errors in Recode and Recode 2 on some machines (Recode is a Nero package for authoring your DVDs) Roxio is the only software that will (apparently) work with HP drives, howere Nero works on everything else,
if you have a HP burner, use roxio, if not, uninstall roxia and purely use Nero, (its much better)
hope that helps

Why do some DVD's not encode past 75-80%? It seems that they are protected somehow. Is there a setting that can override this or are some DVD's simply protected against burning?
If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate some help.

i have this same error. i did a search on google and it brought this page up.
to add a little bit more information for you, i am getting this error from files on my hard drive.
without giving a story away. Nero used to be the biggest conflict causing program there was. many would not beleive it because they only used Nero and had no problems. i on the other hand was among the higher bracket of people that used to burn dics 8 hours a day. with the amount of programs we had running for burning discs we all knew never to install Nero. however, at times one or two of us did and hey presto, trashed pc.
now after 10 years i would have expected Nero to have sorted out the problems they previously denied. so what did i do? installed the l8est version of Nero.
in conjunction with DVD Shrink it is great but the moment i installed Nero it completely trashed...
cdrwin
edonkey
kazza
clone cd
i now find my pc working slow with many errors. to prove a point i formatted a new hard drive and installed xp. i installed al the programs i had b4 Nero and everything worked fine. i have enough time atm to do as i plz so i then installed Nero to see what happened.
this time it trashed all the previously mentioned programs and also (don't ask me how) made one of my drives invisable to windows explorer. bios see it. device manager sees it. explorer refuses to. 39 gig of mp3 files down the drain.
seeing as i was having problems big time i decided to backup all the important work onto a dvd disc while i still could. now the dvd writer(liton dual layer +-R)refuses to complete a task and trashes the disc at any percentage it feels like doing.
i installed a blank hard drive to use to manually copy the files over and all i keep getting now is "canno't read file cycle redundancy check "
i have searched with symantic + 2 online checkers and they all say i am virus free. i suspect this is all down to Nero again but if anybody else has any ideas as to what is my problem plz feel free to enlighten me.

I have just received the same redundancy error exactly as you did. I have been backing up my movies for almost two weeks and after completing a little over thirty back ups with no problema I get this error from shrink while trying to back up Snow White for my grand kids. I feel it has to do with the DVD Snow White as the disk did not burn with decrypter as it usually does. I checked the blank in DVDinfopro and it tells me the media is blank. I am using a Liteon 812-S with shrink and decrypter. I am going to run a couple of test and see if the Snow White will work and will post here what I find. I use only Ritek disk.

I have now reached the opinion that the problem is with the source disk Snow White. I burned another back up using the same disk on another movie and it worked perfect. Tomorrow will try and see if I can get the Snow white to burn with decrypter.

I think you are right. I think my source disk was dirty in a spot and that is what was giving me a prob.

don't just assume it's ur source disc with an error or dirt spot. send your hard drives into pre windows check. let it scan each sector of it and see what happens. if u have any bad sectors and the image is being saved their it scraps it and reports that error.

CRC errors almost ALWAYS mean there is something wrong with the source disc. It may be dirty, have a bad scratch, or (I have had this happen several times) when you look at the bottom of the disc you will see what almost looks like a watermark swirl.... that will do it. If you just bought the disc I would (and have) return it in exchange for another tell them it is defective (it is) and they should exchange it.

Gentlemen:
That was it !A dirty disk with grimy little fingerprints all over it. I took a kleenex and wiped it diagonally and then it burned perfectly! I would have never thought it but lets just say lesson learned. Thanks for all the help!

plz don't dismiss what i just said. i'm not stupid, i was trying to offer some other avenue of help. they are NOT always source disc errors. why do i know this? cos mine was hard drive errors reporting EXACTLY the same problem and they were not from a backup of a dvd.
having sent the hd's to pre start scan i have detected over a 100 bad sectors on one drive. damaged somehow but i don't know when. since the isolation of those sectors the problem has dissapeared. i havn't seen that reported line again and am burning dvd's with ease again.

I said almost always to show respect to your post and was not being dismissive. Yours is the first time I have heard of it being different than a dirty/damaged/faulty disc.
His problem was a dirty disc after all, problem solved.
BTW with that many bad sectors you may want to look into getting a new HD.

about the "looking for a new hd", thats the annoying part, it WAS a new Samsung 120g drive. i had only just installed windows on it. as soon as i put Nero on..bang..problems and that came up on the hd. it ain't even 1 month old

Well guys and or girls I finally made a coaster! I started an automatic burn with D shrink and Decrypter and boom. I looked at the disk before starting and it did not look bad all though it had a few smudges on it. This time decrypter kicked it back after burning about 60%. So I removed the coaster and the file from my hard drive and took the kleenex and cleaned this one as the last one.
I reburned in Dshrink without a disk in the recorder and it posted okay. Then I went to decrypter and burned with a perfect copy made. So another lesson learned. This is after 33 perfect burns and I am not proud of the one coaster.
