Thanks, though I ended up buying an AR from eBay for 45 bucks (bastards...), and hopefully I'm not one of the unlucky ones who ends up with a faulty memory card. Then again, I COULD try another memory card in the adapter. Either way, it's more likely to work this way than with the #$%#ing USB thumbdrive.

Originally posted by SolidFox: I have a crapload of USB thumbdrives, but only one, a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro, worked with the Xbox. I couldn't copy saves to it, though, which is another dead giveaway that it's not compatible. I tried to make it work with AR anyway, and failed.
iDealisti- As far as I can tell, the AR "MAXDRIVE" drivers do NOT work with 64-bit Windows, Vista or otherwise. For some reason, Datel has not yet addressed this problem. I've tried everything to get it to install in Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I DID have success in 32-bit Vista Ultimate and 32-bit XP, though my USB device would not enumerate. My advice would be to try on a PC with a 32-bit Windows OS on it, and test to see if you can format it on the Xbox and copy saves to it.
For those using Vista and having trouble getting the device to "update" to the "MAXDRIVE" (because it might keep telling you it doesn't contain a driver for that device), follow these steps:
1. Right click on it in Device Manager, pick Properties, navigate to the Driver tab and click on "Update Driver."
2. Choose to manually install/browse computer, then pick from list, and uncheck "Show compatible devices."
3. Scroll down to "(Standard USB Host Controller)" on the left, and select "Unknown Device" on the right. Confirm your choice and let it install or whatever.
4. Now back in the properties, click "Update Driver," browse computer, pick from list, and if you don't see "MAXDRIVE" there, click "Have Disk" and navigate to where your xbreadr.inf file is. It should now install.
With luck, AR will now recognize it. If it fails to enumerate, and you're sure you've edited the xbreadr.inf and followed the instructions, well.... your memory card is faulty/thumbdrive isn't compatible.

Quote: Hi! I'm new at the forum, so ya better welcome me...
I've also read from a way to softmod xbox via xbox controller modification. Basically, the idea is to either buy an object, which makes it possible to connect Xbox controller to computer, or you can modificate your controller. Which was the way I used. So, I've modificated my "plug"-end of the whole xbox controller so that I can now plug my controller to computer. And now comes the problem: I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (64bit) and I can't get it to cope with my controller. I've found numereous of articles of those drivers, and some download links, none of whitch working, ofc...
So the question is: How do I get my Xbox controller to work with Windows Vista, and concluding it to another question: If I get drivers to the Xbox controller, do they include the memory stick?
Just to remind, it is an original xbox controller, not Xbox 360 controller.
This post from me was recommended to be moved here, so I did.
If multiple of things can go wrong, they will go wrong, and in the worst possible order.

I'm currently trying the 1GB Kingston DataTraveler pictured here:
http://www.buy.com/prod/Kingston-1GB-Dat.../202743517.html
Some people claimed earlier in the thread that it worked without flaw, but when I plug it into my XBox, the memory screen flickers repeatedly, and it doesnt end up getting formatted to FATX, does anyone have any suggestions?
On a side note, ive tried about 5 other USB's, closest i got was probably my PSP with a 2GB Sony Memory Stick pro duo, which was formatted by the XBox, but encounters an error with Xboxpowersave when I run it with actionreplay. I updated the drivers and followed instructions.

The AR is even pickier about thumbdrives than the Xbox is. All I can say is, if the Xbox doesn't format AND copy to it, it's never gonna work with the AR either. My solution? Get an AR. It worked the first try for me.

Well nevermind, I went out to get a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 1GB and it worked without problems. I now have a softmodded XBox.
Too bad my Dlink Di-524 router isn't capable of wireless bridging.. so my XBox can't go wireless, making XBMC pointless since I wanted to watch it on the TV in the first place :(

Like I said, if you people would follow the tutorial exactly as it was written you would know where you went wrong, how can YOU NOT FIND THE *bleep* DRIVER? Go over the tutorial again and you'll see which part you *bleep*...which is why you can't find the damn thing... -_-

I made my own USB adapter by connecting a female USB cord directly to the inside of my xbox. I got to the controller port wiring on the back side, I spliced into the correct 4 wires that go to Contoller Port4 and attatched the cord. When I start the XBOX with a Dell 256MB USB thumb stick in the adapter it goes to the main screen, I select memory with a contoller in Port 1, but only the main XBOX hard drive shows up. I also tried a Dane Elec 16GB USB drive and same result. I tried connecting an XBOX contoller into Port 4 along with the USB stick, the contoller goes dead, if I unplug the memory stick the controller works fine. I have formatted the memory stick on my PC under each type, FAT, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and the same thing happens every time. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

For any format Windows doesn't recognize it will say it's "RAW". Did you install the maxdriver? If you don't know, reread the instructions or go to page 8 of this forum (about mid-page); ro_bot shows the procedure with more details. If the driver is installed Windows wont see the flash drive at all! You can only view it with usbview.exe or the action replay software.
So,
- install the maxdrive driver
- dont give up
- & great job so far!

I don't know if I can help you.
The wonderful thing about using a usb is there are SO many things that can go wrong :]
Your best bet is to reinstall maxdrive (if you haven't), reformat the usb, reinstall AR (mine only worked with 1.05) and try again. It took several formatings for my USB to work, and I was lucky, because most don't.
If you've tried everything, then a much easier way is to hack an Xbox controller and use an xbox memory card (I would have, but I didn't have a memory card. You could get one at GameStop/somewhere for like $10). Then you wont have to worry about compatibility problems; it's made for the Xbox and AR software.

Skimmed through the posts but didn't see an answer: Has anyone got this to work using Vista? Can't seem to get the AR software to recognize either the AR mem reader or USB. My Xbox does recognize the USB and the AR mem card, but can't transfer the softmod files using 1.40 or 1.41. Even when I try to manually edit device info into the xbreader.inf file, Vista says file is not a 32bit file.

i have done the softmod using my nokia n95 as cardreader with xbox first xbox format the mini SD card (2GB) using n95, Then i used a "normal cardreader" with ar and copy the files because ar dont work with nokia n95. Later used my nokia to transfer te files to xbox :)
ar 1.40 - 1.41 or other wont work with my cardreader ONLY ar 1.05 !
and you must edit youre maxdrive and install it with vista (using usbview)
My sandisk 4gb dont work, my normall cardreader dont work with xbox because xbox wont format it and AR dont work with nokia n95 thats why i used 2 cardreaders 1.nokia n95 as cardreader 2.normall cardreader.
so you can try AR verion 1.05...
And sorry for my english ;)

That's what I'm getting at - When I edit xbreader.inf and try to manually install, Windoze Vista says "not a 32bit driver" and automatically reverts to some generic USB portable media driver. It will not let me use the .inf file, and thus, I can not get AR to recognize either a thumbdrive or the supplied 8mb mem card. If I could just get AR to recognize one or the other, i'd be streaming media by now. Just one more thing about Vista to add to the peeve list. I have no more XP boxes around here. Might have to go to a buddy's house.

There is an option with vista above the driver section see picture, im using W7 64BIT so i must install windows xp on another hard drive to let it work - Or try another maxdrive from another ar version maybe that will work?:
Maxdrive dont work with vista 64bit if you have 64 bit?

Firsy you must read the first page of this topic...
is your xbox softmodded or not?
if so, then you can just ftp to your xbox s much easier than the annoying flash drives.
and you cant copy music into your if your xbox isnt softmodded.

@bredhead,
After you format the memory card in your XBOX, do not format it on your computer. When your laptop asks you if you want to format it, say NO! Read the guide again, you did not pay attention:
Quote: Turn on your Xbox and navigate to the 'Memory' screen. Insert your USB cable and connect the USB drive to it.
If all went well, an error should have popped up saying " The memory card wasn't working properly and has now been erased".
This is NORMAL!!! The USB drive has now been formatted to the Xbox format.
Ok, plug the newly formatted USB into your PC. Don't let Windows format it.
Install 'Action Replay'. Install the update to v1.40. Do NOT open the program!
Open 'USBView' and then press 'F5' on your keyboard to ensure the list is refreshed.
Find the new 'USB Mass Storage Device', click on it so it displays it's properties on the right.
We are looking for the 'idVendor' and 'idProduct' numbers. Write down the last four digits of each and make a note as...
Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!
