I've been using Memorex for SSBB. I believe they are actually Ridata stock. I usually use HP -R Lightscribe DVD's but the Memorex ones were cheaper and I didn't want to wait for a shipment from an online store.
I've read this thread almost all the way through and it seems pretty much like a crap shoot for WiiKey users. I've tried twice.
My first disk was a Memorex +R DVD DL
NTSC Wii (first release) WiiKEY 1.9g
Burned with the Newest ImageBurn at 2.4 on an LG burner.
This burner has never made a coaster either.
The first disk plays, but will go to the white screen with green print at any time. It'll do it in the middle of a match. If I eject the disk and stick it back in quickly, the game takes right back off were it froze.
My second disk was the same as above except with the layer break set manually. It still will freeze during the intro. But once I'm through into the menu screen it doesn't have any problems. (YET)
Good enough for me.
I have a feeling that an HP or Verbatim disk may prove better for my picky machine, but DL's are pricy and as long as it runs ok during the game I can live with it.
Has anyony heard about the new Mario Kart being Dual Layer?

Ok I guess I should share my short story, maybe it will help someone.
Notes: I downloaded the latest internet Wii update before I did anything (I also made sure I had the latest Wii-Key update -- And I had already played the Jp version). I have a NTSC-Wii and the DVD burner is a PIONEER one that came with my Sony notebook.
***1st time (Semi-success)
I burned the Wiizard ISO with ImgBurn 2.4X without any additional settings. I used a Memorex DL disc. It worked great but I was getting an occasional "Disc Error" message while playing the Adventure Mode
***2nd time (Complete Success)
I burned the same ISO with ImgBurn, now @ 2.0X speed and without any additional settings with a Memorex disc. It's working flawlessly.

(1) Got a copy of retail US_NTSC version, ran it in a D2CKey Wii (update to the 3.2U from wifi, played it and got disk update message -- allowed.). Game Worked fine!
Finally, I found my answer. The Legit copy works fine on D2Ckey. Seems like SSBB only has problems with first generation chips (Cyclowiz, Wiikey, Wid etc.). D2C drive modchips can play the retail just fine... yahoo!!!

I tried disc utility, burn and liquidcd, none of them worked. I found a program called iburn360(specifically designed for xbox360) which lets you enter the layer break. Made a copy of SSBB using Verbatim DVD+R DL on my iMac G5 1.9GHz in about 39 min. Works flawless with D2CKey.

My eventual success (maybe can be used as learning for others)
Wii: NTSC-USA D2B Chipset w/ WiiKey modchip
Firmware: 1.9g
Trial 1:
Had pre-ordered brawl. Got it day it came out. Put it in Wii, disc not recognized.
Trial 2:
Since I don't have LG drive, I tried the WiiKey firmware corruption trick. Pulled the plug while updating firmware @ 60, 65 and 70%. Each time, the wii would give me a white or black screen after asking me to make a save file. Other original games did not work either. Used recovery disc and 1.9g disc to go back to square one.
Trial 3:
WiiZard releases ISO onto usenet. Download, burn on Memorex DL DVD+R w/ Nero and it works perfectly (So Far).
Can't connect to an online match for the life of me though...

hi
Yes, baby. I just got ssbb to work on my wii. My wii was ver.3.0u, I updated to 1.9g to play smg then put in ssbb. It ask to do an update and I let it and that updated to 3.1u. Then the ssbb picture show up and click and been playing for the last few hours. I haven't see any white screen that other people mention. The ssbb is burn to a Memorex +r dl. So you really don't have to do an update to 3.2u before you put in ssbb.

I have the exact problem with my gf's Wii, and SSBB works on mine but not hers even though its the same disc.
Any luck figuring this one out?

I did the 1.9b update method and disconnected at 70% to play retail version super smash brother brawl. I got the brawl screen to come up in the wii menu.
But in the beginning after it shows safety precaution white screen, it goes to a now loading screen. It stays at this now loading screen forever and doesnt move a step. I tried to do this 5 times and still it has not work. Also my wiisport dont work.
Any suggestions?

I feel like I saw this posted previously about a week ago, but I can't seem to find it anywhere(I did look through the thread), so please forgive me if this has already been asked....
Ok, so I "corrupted" my wiikey so play SSBB, and it loads fine (retail copy of course, and US version). However, when it gets to the first "Now Loading" screen, it just stays there. It doesn't move anywhere. I've tried rebooting it, taking the disc out and putting it back in while still at the loading screen, everything I could think of. My wii is running the latest 3.2U firmware. I don't think it's my laser having problems reading dual layer discs, because I've created a couple dual layer video discs using MFE Disc Creator and they worked just fine. Can anyone please help?
Thank You!

I got ssbb to work on my wii with wiikey. I use 1.9g to updated and my wii is v.3.0u then I put in the copy of ssbb and it ask to update and I let it update to version 3.1u. Then it reboot and go back to the main menu where ssbb screen show up, play the game and have not see any white screen or problem of any sort. I didn't make any change or use the 1.3 conf. disk on my wii, just the 1.9g to update disk.
I think the problem you have is the dual layer disk itself. I use memorex +r dl and it work for me. I think you need to try another brand of disk.

As far as I know error 101 isnt caused by a bad burn, its that the wii is detecting the modchip. Try running the 1.9g update again.

Try updating your driver firmware.
For my burner? I made sure it had the latest driver before doing this.

1. Can I play someone with a US version of SSBB with my JAP copy of SSBB as long as we have the friend codes?
and
2. If i have 3.2U, would i need to do the 15% trick still to play a JAP copy of SSBB
