I. HATE. THIS. GAME.
I've tried to burn the Wiizard copy over and over again now 4 times!
Does ANYONE know AT ALL how to fix the BLACK SCREEN ERROR. As in, I hit start on the disc channel, the Wii clicks, and it says "Disc cannot be read, eject etc.".
I have verbatims 2.4x DL +R, I tried with layer break and without to no avail. I have a 3.2U US Wii with Cyclowiz modchip.
AHHHH!

The i/o device error is pretty generic - input output error that can be caused by different things like media.

Booktyping makes a +R disc appear to be a DVD-Rom to a player, console etc. increasing compatibility.
Not all drives support this but most Philips do.
What's the model #?
ImgBurn is telling me that test mode is not available for DL discs. I'll give it another try and see what happens.

Hi all, I'd like to post my success! First off, I have a dell comp with a pioneer burner-111d and lg drive (updated firmware on the 111d burner), imgburn 2.4.0.0, friidump 0.4.0., retail u.s. ssbb, dumped copy of u.s. ssbb 7.92 GB (8,511,160,320 bytes), iso of ssbb jap ver. 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes), iso of wiizard ssbb 7.92 GB (8,511,160,320 bytes). Media used, maxell dvd-r 16x, verbatim dvd+r dl 8x, memorex dvd+r dl 2.4x.
Backup of retail u.s. ssbb on verbatim dvd+r dl: FAILED 3 times!
Backup of ssbb jab on maxell dvd-r: SUCCESS on first attempt! (but you'll only have versus mode, no videos, etc.
Backup of ssbb wiizard iso on memorex dvd+r dl (no layer break): SUCCESS on first attempt! (weird thing was that when I was burning the wiizard iso, the burn process failed @ 96% but I still finalized the dics and it works flawlessly.
If I can help in anyway feel free to ask and hopefully I didn't break any forum rules. I'm going to go smoke a bowl and the play ssbb. peace.

Not sure if this is the right place but here i go
In order to install SSBB we need 1.9g
but if we do not have SMG can i still update my system? cuz i see lots of people saying somehting about inserting SMG and homer will say something.
annother questions is if i get SSBB to work with all the updates will all my backups still work?

Hey i seem to be having the same problemas everyone else with brawl. I get up to the screen where it asks me to create a save file, and then the screen turns white for a second and then an error message comes up, this is whlst running in 50hz mode. While running in 60 hz the game will not even launch.I have the emcubed iso, burned at 2.4x on TDK media (i live in aus and therefore have never even seen memorex discs) I have a pal wii with wiikey, however i know the region is not the issue because i have seen several people using US consoles with the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Trying to corrupt my wiikey to play retail Smash Bros..
Read earlier walkthrough of process.. can't seem to corrupt it.
(US)
Steps taken:
insert 1.9b update - see gamecube icon.. start program
see wiikey screen w/ panty shot .. press reset to run 'test'
test runs.. press reset.. press again to 'update'
BIG red letters DO NOT POWEROFF
Powered off by pulling plug and by holding power at various points.. 35%,50%,57%,63%,71%,82%
Each time.. I am still able to access the 1.9b update disk. (the earlier post stated you could tell it worked because the update disk won't read) ... (and tried Smash Bros each time . no success)
Am I missing a step? Fix?

I successfully burned the game this time and I am able to start the game, but right after the wiimote warning screen, I get the error saying disk cannot be read. What can be the problem?

1.9g is the wiikey update. It's seperate from the SMG update (which was 3.1 if I remember correctly) Homer's voice is part of the wiikey 1.9g update, nothing to do with SMG. You dont need SMG to install it, just follow the directions in the sticky on doing that and you should be set to play SSBB.
I'm still seeing people complaining that they cant get the game to work and a huge number of them are using verbatum DL disks. To everyone like SiRkid1 and ptpatil, try some different brands. For whatever reason verbatum just dosent seem to be working with this game.

I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who posted and here is what worked for me.
Wii - us ntsc d2c chipset
Chip - d2ckey
Used friidump to dump us ntsc copy of game
First I burned a verbatim dvd+r dl with nero at 4x on my Plextor PX-716 with no layer break and it loaded and updated the system and I got to the intro video and then got the white screen of death
Second I tried a verbatim dvd+r dl with imgburn latest version at 2.4x and layer break set it loaded up and I got to where I could choose the mode and then I would select a character and it would give me an error before the game would start
This made me wonder if I could play the original disc, so I inserted it and the disc came up on the disc channel and when I clicked on it to load it gave me an error. After that I decided to update my wii on line to the latest version. After that I loaded the original and it played no problem. That made me wonder if either of the other 2 burns would work now, so I tried but neither did.
Third I used a memorex dvd+r dl at 2.4x with imgburn latest version and layer break set using my Plextor px-755 and the wii gave me some error like invalid disc
Fourth I used a verbatim dvd+r dl at 2.4x with imgburn latest version and layer break set on my Plextor px-755 and at first I loded it it came up on the wii menu I selected the disc and it loded and then when the intro video came on I hit the "A" button immediately And it froze. I thought I will try it one more time and this time when the intro video came on I let it play for a few seconds before hitting the "A" button and I was able to play the game with out any other problems
I hope this can help someone!

I had problems with random lockups which I now put down to a dodgy image because it only happens when Mario is selected. I was burning on Aones and switched to Verbatim because I thought media was the issue (which it isn't). I couldn't get anything else locally tbh though I was trying to get memorex - which were out of stock and more expensive than the verbs as well.
Anyway - the Aones work for me but also Verbatims work as well - I played the game for ages last night and the only hassle I had was when I selected Mario. I'm grabbing another image to fix my issue. I only post this because if all else fails ppl shouldn't rule out Verbatim based on someone saying they don't work when they actually can - and I've read of others having success with them as well. I've read of more succes with memorex generally though so perhaps that's the best way to go... it's all trial and error in any case.

I have wii with d2ckey. I used imgburn at 2.4 speed, layer brick: 2084960, wizard iso. fisrt try worked fine with no problems.

hi there i was just wondering if those people who had success with this game post a screenshot of their general settings of IMGBURN because i ma not sure whether to set seamless layer break on or off and many other probs so if you could do that for me that would help a lot and do you guys reccomend Ridata DVD+r DL??

because of my rediculus efforts to make a copy of smash bros work, my console is semi-bricked and everytime i try a disc it shows an error message. does anyone know if i bought a real version of the game would it still work.
my wii is from japan and thats where i will buy smash bros from

The only way to fix a brick is with higher firmware on a disk from your region. If you bricked with ssbb USA then ssbb JAP won't fix it. Mario Kart JAP, when released, may if it carries a higher firmware than your existing one.

If your Wii is playing other games without a problem and the USA copy updated your Wii to play brawl then I would expect it to play SSBB JAP original unless you have a wiikey in which case you might get away with a backup. Wiikey won't play SSBB original.

That's false..my cousin has WiiKey installed and is playing the original with no problems..and he can still play his backups

Try a dvd-r dl they are hard to come by. I have found even on normal backups if i use a dvd+r and set the book type to dvd-rom i still have issues with the videos. Wii Hates +r

That's false..my cousin has WiiKey installed and is playing the original with no problems..and he can still play his backups
Would you care to let us know how, because every other person with a WiiKey has had no success playing the original copy.
What firmware is the Wiikey?

I've still have had no success i'm on my 5th memorex dl and no luck i've tried with the latest img burn. With layer breakand with out and have tried many speeds. I get invalid disk inserted. I have a north american wii nstc witha d2c chip in it.
