Tokijin, thanks for your help...I thought it was going to work and was getting excited, when it hung up again. Once again every 20 seconds or so, it stops to load...I played the original to make sure it didn't do that in the game. It seems to be a backup issue, or my ps2 is just having a difficult time reading dvd-r's. The only thing that puzzles me, is GTA: San Andreas works flawlessly, all the other games, I have tried have a similiar issue to Need For Speed. Has anyone heard of or had similiar experiences? I'm using Swap Magic 3, would I experience the same things if I used a ModChip. Thanks again for all suggestions.

Well it depends. What media are you using? Have you had any problems with your burner? I'd rule out the media before worrying about a modchip. Most likely you'd have less trouble, but you should make sure it's not crappy media first.

A mod chip might change the gameplay, but i agree with Tokijin at the moment. if it is you mod chip, it might also depend on where you got it installed and how much you trust the person that installed it

I've been using Swap Magic 3(the boot discs), I've been told it's just like a mod chip in cd or dvd form. I have a sony dvd(dru530 or something like that) and a nec 3540 DL burner. The sony is quite a bit older, and I havent' been using it much, but I have tried both to burn with. Could there be some kind of rip lock on the burners...I don't have just a dvd-rom installed. I thought about trying the boot discs and backups on my nephews ps2, but he has a slim line and I have the old original ps2. Don't want to go ripping his apart just to check mine. I'm probably rambling too much for a forum. I have 3 different types of media: maxell, memorex, and verbatim...I have tried all 3. Once again, I appreciate your help, I'm stumped.

Have you tried the games on your nephew's PS2. it will only work if he has SwapMagic or a Mod Chip

Also, the verbatim is your best bet, DON'T use memorwrecks

Yeah go with the Verbatim. Off topic but I have a modchip that supports DVD-9 games. So I burned GT4 to a Verbatim DVD+R DL, and it plays perfectly in my PS2. It's 50/50 wheter or not DVD+R's will work in a v.4. Are you using a slide card or a flip top? You can't just load backups by closing the disc tray with the eject button. Try speeding your burns up to 4x.

I'm using a slide card. I've always understood you were to burn at a low speed. I haven't tried burning at a faster rate. Can this help in some cases? The way my luck usually goes, I probably own the only ps2 that cannot be mod'ed, the one sony should have used as their model.

Burning slower isn't always better, especially with newer burners. Try burning at 4x.

NEWB question (I have used the search feature, but can't find a direct answer!)
I know the purpose of rebuilding games is to allow them to play with things like SwapMagic, but how about the TRUNCATED rebuilding process? The one where in the tutorial it says you replace the dummy files with text files of the exact same names? Is that so you can play DVD9 games like God of War on DVD5? Or is the process of making God of War playable with SwapMagic3.6 just splitting it to two DVD5s?
I'm worried about this since I'm getting my swapmagic soon and want to know if this tutorial to rebuild games is the same for ALL games, or every new game that isn't compatible with things like swapmagic has it's own tutorial.
Can you just describe to be how, for example, I'd rebuild God of War to play with swapmagic?
Thanks

There is actually a way of rebuilding DVD-9 games to DVD-5, But I am Not exactly sure how to do it. If you are that desperate to make it a DVD-5, there should be some tutorials on the internet. Otherwise, you can just burn it as a DVD-9 game, but you have to have a compatible chip

thanks everyone for your help, it seems the problem has been the burn speed the whole time. I always thought slower speeds were better, I tried using 4x and so far has worked great on need for speed:most wanted and Battlefront II..

There's a whole thread about burning GT4 to a DVD-5. I simply burned it to a DL disc since my modchip supports DVD-9 games. To rip to DVD-5 for use with Swap Magic check here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/215155
Very few games need rebuilding and have dummy files. Only around 5% or so.
10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. Games over 4.38GB's will need rebuilt. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515 With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT:
From Anthony 05:
Download it and then follow these instrcutions and it will work.
1. select Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins list.
2. Select the iso.
3. Click extract LBA
4. Click extract file
5. Click rebuild file
6. Click rebuild lba.
Make sure you do it in that order.
This worked for me when every other way failed.
It is very easy to do so even the noobies should be able to do it.
Keep in mind im backing up the PAL version, but if your having trouble backing up with NTSC then i dont see a problem trying.
Good luck.
49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one.

Hursty, My bad on sending the private message, anyway do you have any other links on getting gnies iml2iso and dummy file maker? I tried the links you suggested in your how to guide to no avail. I also tried a search on google with no luck there either.

Read a little bit. A link to Expert is right in my previous post. There are plenty of links for IML2ISO. Search a little next time:
78. Q. Sure I'm supposed to use DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120%, Isobuster, DVD Shrink, Nero, IML2ISO, CD/DVDGen and all this different software you mention for burning PS2 games, where can I download it?
A. This is for those exceptionally lazy people who don't realize that you click on the hyperlink of the program in question and it links you to a download page. So enjoy.
DVD Decrypter (Thanks to Paddymail for the links): http://teammodders.com/download.php?action=file&file_id=1

OK, I know that there's a lot of guides/methods are posted here displaying on "how to rebuild a DVD9 PS2 games" into DVD5 already. However, seems like newbies are having troubles regardless of how great those guides are. Here is an "easy/simple" guide, especially for those clueless newbies with Swap Magic.
In this guide, I will use 50CENT BULLETPROOF, since it's 5.95GB and many newbies (Swap Magic users) are having troubles rebuilding or backing up the game and or any games that's over 4.7GB. With that being said, we can't just have DVD Decrypter or Nero to rip and burn onto a single layer 4.7GB. Apparently, in order for you to have a successful backup and play, you'll need to rebuild the game so your Swap Magic Disc can boot it up properly. This is a working method, I've tried and tested the backups and it works!
**TOOLS NEEDED FOR REBUILDING PS2 GAMES: DVD Decrypter, Gnie's IML2ISO v4, Gnie's ExPERT, APACHE 2, ISO BUSTER PRO 1.8, CD/DVD GEN 1.5
get ISO Buster here http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/
get DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 here http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1F7RMPCJPZG8E1TH0BSYMXKJKN
get SONY CD/DVD GEN 1.5 here http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0LQ1K89F0PO4W19LN1RTYZAUO6
Gnie's IML2ISO version 4 http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=330OUJ2QYZ8ZH16I4ICKFNAL2E
Gnie's ExPERT http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2YY515VUBH0I518ML6757N04NS
APACHE 2 http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3QMIKNH9HMBW828LOFQT1RL03D
I highly suggest whoever don't have them yet, grab it before it's gone because it won't be there long. **NOTE: On this guide, I will only use ISO Buster Pro 1.8, CDVD GEN 1.5, Gnie's IML2ISO and Nero Express (Nero 7) to burn. Burning is a choice/preference of yours, so use which ever programs you're more experienced to burn. Of course, I do nearly 50% and 50% on both DVD Decrypter and Nero for the burning process.
Since most/nearly everyone already know how to rip the game via DVD Decrypter using MODE, ISO, READ R into the hard drive and MODE, ISO, WRITE to burn, so I'll just briefly write for that process for now.
**STEP 1**
- rip the game with DVD Decrypter via MODE, ISO, READ R to your hard drive.
**STEP 2**
- Extract the ISO or files with ISO Buster Pro 1.8 -- now Open up ISO Buster Pro 1.8
Now make a Folder in your hard drive called ISO BUSTER EXTRACT or something that you'll remember.
Once ISO Buster is completed, don't close it... leave it open, but just minimize down on your taskbar only because you'll need that for reference to get going with CD/DVD GEN 1.5.
**STEP 3**
Now open up CD/DVD GEN 1.5
Now bring back up ISO Buster Pro 1.8 again, so you can reference the files in order.
at DISC NAME: put SLUS 21315 (with no period). **NOTE: sometimes it will be SLES XXXXX. at PRODUCER NAME: always put PLAYSTATION, at LICENSE NAME: America (or wherever the disc/or you is from, so if you're from Europe, put Europe, if you're from Japan, put Japan).
Now go into your hard drive and create a Folder name IML, then EXIT out.
**STEP 4**
Now open up Gnie's IML2ISO
**STEP 5**
Burning the ISO Image, now you can Open up DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn or Nero Express and burn your newly rebuild game. For this guide, I'm using Nero Express to burn. Why? Because I like the fact that Nero can/will "automatically" set the "Book Type" into DVD-ROM whenever I use a DVD+R, DVD+RW media. However, the choice is yours.... I've done both DVD Decrypter and Nero equally, but lately I just don't like to go inside the settings on DVD Decrypter and set the "book type" every burns that's all.
I prefer any DVD+R from Taiyo Yuden, Maxell (made in japan by Hitachi Corp.) and Verbatim "advanced azo" or "datalife plus" and have them "Book Typing" into "DVD-ROM". With book typing them into DVD-ROM format, you're FREE OF WORRIES... that's right, you hear me, any PS2 consoles will play any DVD-ROM format flawlesstly.
That's it...... now you can pop up a Hennessey or Tequila and play all night long.
*NOTE: If you have the following set to "Automatic", then whenever you use Nero Express (for PS2 games or dvd movies), Nero Burning Rom (for dvd movies) Nero Recode 2 & Nero Vision (for dvd movies) to burn, all your backups will automatically set the ?Book Type? to DVD-ROM if you?re using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL media. That is... if your dvd burner is capable of book typing.
((Here's how to set the "Book Type" or "Bitsetting" using Nero Burning Rom by Alkohol)) **NOTE: this is just the settings only, it will work even if you burn your PS2 games with Nero Express, it will automatically "Book Type" your DVD+R into DVD-ROM when you're burning with Nero Express.
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on ?Options," then on "Book Type Settings," set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every time when you burn using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc, Nero will ?automatically? change the Book Type into a DVD-ROM format.
Good luck, have fun burning -- Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Don't use cheap media, remember quality last, go here for more info http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/262544
